  • Today I'm talking about one of the best FMV adventure games - Gabriel Knight 2! This game has everything - werewolves, sexual tension, opera, Bavarian history, sausages.
    #PCGames #Sierra #GabrielKnight
    Gabriel Knight was played on PC and recorded with OBS. I used the version from Steam. Music is from the game's OST.

    I still remember seeing the box in a department store and asking my dad to buy it for me. I think I'd seen a review in Computer Gaming World, but that was it. It quickly became my favorite game of all time. The music, the atmosphere, the story. I fell in love with Bavaria, Wagner, and the history of King Ludwig II, and this game put me on a path that ended with me living in Germany and becoming fluent in German. The sections with Grace are much inferior to anything with Gabriel, and the ending chase comes out of nowhere, but this game will always be special to me.

      @@Cannotbetamed1 I imagine Cannot be Tamed as a person forced to review games and they need to escape the apartment before the sun comes out as she's a Vampire. They should have Perry Caravello as the back up character reprising his role as Scary Perry and Daphney Sugar Rose from A Little Piece Of Horror.

    Von Glower is such a great villain. He is essentially a tragic character, forced to suffer for his father's crimes. And death is the only possible escape.
    He created an entire philosophy to justify his nature as something good. In the cave scene, he is in utter shock at facing his true self, that he is not as much in control as he would like to think.
    Despite his numerous victims, he is highly sympathetic and is himself a victim of circumstances beyond his control.

    Another awesome video Pam! I was really looking forward to your review of that game as it is one of my favourites, all genres included. The only part I somehow disagree with you is the attraction between Gabriel and the Baron. I've never seen it as a romantic one, more a deep desire from the Baron to find an equal with which he could form a deep friendship. His previous attempts were all big disappointments for him, but he has great hopes for this one. I wish there was an alternate ending where Gabriel accepts the Baron's offer.

    This stream was always a blast to watch you play. First, because I was always curious about this title, and secondly due to seeing you thirst over Gabriel and the Barron's steamy scenes was hilarious 😂 This was a very accurate review of the game.

  • @DchanZockt
    @DchanZockt 10 місяців тому +2

    The game is honestly already unintentionally funny. Like, for example, the scenes in which the actors try to speak German. And you look at the German version in comparison, where they solved it by simply trying to speak a different dialect.
    But apart from that, it's interesting that even as someone who lives in Germany, you learn more about history while playing. (For info: King Ludwig II is more of a Bavarian topic here).

    I thought Baron Von Glauer's face was familiar. But when you discussed the chemistry between Gabriel and him and the shot better captured his face I was certain, even before you shout him out in the end: played by Peter J. Lucas, who also made my favourite film, David Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE (capitalized in the original title). His line deliveries are awesome, and I recommend the film -- a weird, abstract mystery which you have to watch with an active mind, almost like an point-and-click adventure itself.

    Bless you for being upfront about the amazing sexual tension between Gabriel and the Baron. When I played through this a couple years back, it was refreshingly explicit when Gabriel was hooking up with one of the Baron's friends and - without question - they were picturing one another in the friends' position.

    I loved this game. Easily my favorite FMV game, and one of my favorite of the classic point-and-click adventures. The lore behind the game, with the werewolves and the lost Wagner opera...the visit to Neuschwanstein...just excellent. It's funny, because when the game was new, I picked up on the "homoerotic" stuff between Gabriel and Glower (name's a little on the nose, but okay), but it didn't bug me. That's just how monsters were in the 1980s and 1990s. Vampires were, certainly, um...gender fluid, especially as brought to us by Anne Rice, so why wouldn't werewolves be? Today, though, people would probably be looking to burn copies of this game in the city square (good luck, since most games these days are downloads).
    A game that subtly suggests "will they or won't they" -- and then, possibly -- "did they"? felt like no big deal when The Beast Within came out. But we've gone backwards in many ways.

    • @jaconova
      @jaconova 19 днів тому

      I dont think it´s really homoerotic. Von Glower is talking about hunting and killing as werewolves. Of course the comedic value lies there, as Gabriel acts all confused-unease with Van Glower´s apparently (from Gabriel´s pov) gratuitous admiration.

  • @zeprowl
    @zeprowl 3 місяці тому +2

    I love how the tension is never explicitly stated but always literal *tension*. Gabriel is fighting his own inner battle to let go. It doesn't need to be narrated or spoken, and it's incredibly effective as a result.

    • @jaconova
      @jaconova 19 днів тому

      I dont think it´s sexual tension: it´s a predator (killer?) admiration for another (potential) predator. Probably Jensen enjoyed playing with innuendos, and it was even maybe intentional: Gabriel feels confused because he doesn´t know Von Glower is taking about their werewolf connection... hilarious!

    1. I wonder if Gabriel Knight is related to Nick Knight since both deal with the supernatural? Super-mega-ultra bonus points, if you get that reference, and if you do and we're now officially besties.
    2. I haven't seen many but I love the look of real people in artful, green screened, digital worlds. I don't know what it is about it but just works. The only other game I can think of that does it is Noctropolis. I wish someone could figure out a way to do it with the same feel in modern gaming. Make an open world game in this style or something.
    3. My theory for why they don't kiss is because the tension is so great, if they gave in, they wouldn't hold back. And, let's face it, as much as they want to, neither man wants to mess up their glorious hair passionately running each others hands through it. If one messed up the others hair they'd win. If both of them mess up each others hair they'd both lose, and they know it. Pride and propriety win the day, sadly.

    Just playing this through since about when it was released and got it. Baron was even better actor than I remembered. But Grace was even more worse than I remembered. Adult acting like angsty teen girl. Gabriel actor is quite bad, meaning so over acting. Overall there was few very minor plot related characters that should've been casted for more important roles. Puzzles are quite mixed bag. Mostly very logical, but man like the scene you have to trigger with flower on water is absurd. I couldn't see absolutely anything hinting to do that. History aspect and details are way better than I remembered and apparently older you get, more you can appreciate that aspect of gameplay.

It's too bad that Jensen's last adventure, Moebius, had so many issues (mostly puzzle ones honestly, but I liked it more than most) since we now know she was hoping to fully continue it in an M/M direction...
    And yes, this game is really a masterpiece, faults and all (fucking mazes.) Honestly, I still every so often have dreams about it..

      The dialogue plays with such innuendos but only for comedic value: Von Glower is talking about their werewolf bond, killing together, etc. Von Glower wants Gabriel to become a beast-predator. So objectively the homoerotic undertone between the characters is just a funny situation-misunderstanding.

      Is not sexual tension: Van Glower wants Gabriel to embrace the werewolf-predator trait. Jensen plays it hilariously with the seemingly flirty dialogue and Gabriel acting all confused.

      @@xAnescox I sure do, I think it's handled much better in the book! Gabriel thinks about the temptation that is the Baron (it's a lot more prominent in the book!), but ultimately remembers the horror of Von Zell's lair (it is made obvious that Von Glower must have used it himself because there was black hair to be found) and Von Glower's failed philosophy -- the other members of the hunting lodge all have a pretty big vice, like drinking, gluttony, Preiß's rutting... The chapter ends with Grace coming to check up on Gabriel and asking him if he read the letter. She then asks if they should go along with the plan. And Gabriel says that of course they are going ahead with the plan and that he made his choice long ago. So in the end it's still very sad, but you can feel that it's not an easy decision for Gabriel and he can ultimately decide for himself to be the good guy. I still wish the ending was different, but hey, what's fanfiction for, right?

    The chemistry between Gabriel and Friedrich I interpreted as Friedrich FINALLY having someone young and beautiful like himself to hang out with. All the lodge members are ugly and old, of course he's excited when a handsome person appears. Maybe why he's more candid with Gabriel than the others. I too prefer the company of beautiful people of both sexes without any sexual undertones. It's just the appreciation for beauty. I am also more relaxed and candid in their company. Let's face it: beautiful people make life more colourful and vibrant.

    wow, I did not have the same homoerotic persepctive you had. Which is fine, everyone will have their own take on those scenes. I felt the Baron's comments were odd and meant to make the player feel awkard. I did not see Gabriel has having any sort of sexual tension with the Baron. Overall, Great game and a classic in my opinion. I have Dean on my facebook, interesting dude.

      Yeah, she is pushing the lgbt agenda for whatever reason. She also implied GK1´s main character was a toxic male, lol. You are right about this one: Von Glower is actually talking about killing together, as werewolves. The dialogues plays with a flirty overtone but just for comedic value. Gabriel doesn´t understand why Van Glower shows such admiration for him: is because they are both werewolves.

I've played some of the Chou Aniki games, so it won't be the most homoerotic game I've experienced, but runners-up are always welcome.

    I found it kind of interesting that you feel GK3 is harder to watch these days than GK2. Sure, both didn't age well, as it's always is with early 3D graphics, but the FMV sequences in GK2 are just way too low-res. I have tried to play the series about a year ago and while GK1 was still easy to look at (in it's original version, not the 20th anniversary remake, which is actually quite good, too), I couldn't get into GK2 at all. I had to skip it and already was ready to stop my planed playthrough of the series completely, because I know how badly early 3D games age, but I had at least to try GK3 anyway and was pleasantly surprised. I finished the game without any issues. But GK2? Sadly, there was just no way...
