Matriarch draws on the same classic module designs of the early full size RA Moog modules and bring that essence of original Mooginess, like the Grandmother and as such, hjust a single oscillator in Sawtooth can be very pleasing. The oscillators offer Tri/Saw, Square and 50% PW across 16 to 2” range and are very stable and track well. As I said, they sound lovely. The next stage is the classic CP3 mixer which has the same drive and burn that made those early Moogs sound the way they do, this is no different.
Filter is more modified as it creates a stereo signal when in Stereo mode with a two 4-pole classic Moog sound. Drive into the filter will greatly change the response of the resonance the way you’d expect.
This really is at the heart of the overall sound and is so familiar and authoritative that you can’t help but smile. It's so, well Moogey...

I need to sell my Grandmother, Not my Moog Grandmother (Heaven forbid) my real Grandmother to buy this
fair trade
Does she cook well? PM me.
(joking obviously)
@@pointsurrender Yeah when you can live on take out who needs her.
i hope your granny reads this comment and you don't get any more cake.
@@bradenrodriguez5183 Haha yes, if she was still around I think I'd have to go on a 'Cakewalk' to get my cake fix.
I love that you can tell that Nick is having a hard time reviewing the synth because he's enjoying playing it so much. Thanks, this inspired me to get a Matriarch.
You're exactly on point! The Matriarch is so complex and so simple at the same time...I won't get tired tired of playing with it any time soon, every time you go for a discovery, you learn something. Moog really nailed something with that one, semi-modular and paraphony really found a true meaning here. This is a really enjoyable synth to play, and it fits so well into whatever setup you're integrating it into.. I love mine!
I think this and the Grandmother are the best synths Moog has released in years! Just back to basics, great sounding analog synths! I went for the GM, does all I need! Love it! And that spring-reverb sounds so good and is a cool feature. Future classics thats for sure!
I do agree that these two are some amazing must have synths that will probably be heard on a lot of mordern classic recordings, but i think something like the subharmonicon deserves to be in that discussion. On of if not the most initiative things moog have made in decades imo. Nothing wrong with a back to basics performance bassed synth but i cant think of too many standalone unites that can do what the submarmonicon can do while still having that classic moog sound.
@@hipsterscout1 and the Moog One, but I understand why we didn’t count that because it’s basically the equivalent of trying to buy a concept car financially lol
Great review, thank you! SonicState is the only UA-cam channel on which I will tolerate six adverts in eight minutes.
Sorry about that YT are getting very insistent about their ads. I have manually removed at least half of them now.
get yrself some adblocker Pico, it's worth it
Pay for premium. No ads. This content needs to be funded somehow.
Naw, just use AdBlock.
Agree with MysecretMachines comment below. I'm glad Moog took a step back to roots with the design . The basic tone is phenomenal . I hope moog continue to build on their legacy of this greatness.
I think getting the basic tone pleasing is the most important step. I have some synths that are overly complex....but the ones I always wind up playing are the straight foward ones that just sound great out the gate. I think this synth is a winner for sure.At first I wasn't too big a fan but it has definitely grown on me.
@@fortheloveofnoise Exactly basic tone imo is more important than the features which seems to be what alot of companies are doing these days.
The Matriarch and Grandmover are defo on my list either one will do.
"Sorry, I'm getting lost in polyphonic business." I need this on my t-shirt.
Nick is so knowledgeable about analogue synthesis I’m sure he must have a CV in/out connection into his brain.
Does he have MIDI?
no software emulation can come close to how a real moog sounds. goddamn.
BIIIIIIIIIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!
Truth
Monark does the job with the Model D imo
Just watched your Pro3 video and now I don’t know which one to go for...any thoughts on that?
Jeremy, you would love the Grandmother!
Future Classic right here, love this thing. A view it as a perfect hardware opposite/compliment to the HydraSynth.
Interesting comment. I have a HS but have no money for this Moog. It's a gorgeous looking synth but not sure if I love the sound. Oh wait a minute; maybe I do. You can get a new Minikorg 700 for the same price, heehee.
I've recently upended my setup selling things off to pivot to a matriarch - hydra keyboard combo. The only things (aside from drum machines and my mpc) that I'm keeping are my modular things
That filter character change depending on input levels is something I really noticed on my old SH-09, but never really on any other synth I've played. So nice to see it somewhere else.
This is the best demo of the Matriarch. It plays to the Moog strengths. The rawness and drive is beautiful.
Pandemic or no, there's still only 1 Nick for thorough, musical synth reviews.
You really make the best review videos. This is the first review that I've seen that really shows off the raw character of the individual components of this synth. Thanks for breaking it all down!
Check out Loopop's as well :)
The noodle at the end is a true little gem i must say.
When are they not?
thank you Nick for this, you are so much appreciated in the synth community!
Your use of the sequencer and splitting the Matriarch into two synths was game changing. Looking forward to your upcoming Q&A.
Hi
@@stephenutt3526 hi
My subwoofer was being pushed hard on this video. Best low end on a synth.
Wow, even for two grand, that’s way more synth than a lot of people would need just to have the “MOOG SOUND.” That’s kinda a pretty good deal. I personally think the Grandmother suits my use more, but this is certainly a great machine.
Holy hell that end jam was to die for!!! You're amazing at patches and ideas/playing cool parts.
Gotta love a Moog!!!! Everything down to the packaging says this is a quality product!!!!
Don't know if there are any synth nerds about, but if so I can tell you, as a recent Matriarch owner, it does the Tomita whistle patch really well. Amazing piece of gear!
"who's the mummy" this is why we love ya Nick lol...great stuff! Yep tis yummy synth lol jam at end demonstrates what this is all about...oh if they don't ask for it back...I can send you my address???😉😂🙌
Around 11.00, is very much the point and why I bought mine. Love this review.
awesome
Great to have the option of getting that old core Moog sound in a neat packet.
And with velocity and aftertouch,
that even Emerson didn't have.
Wow! Now I fully understand Moog’s choice of names for their synths, as you surmised in the intro.
Got it and make all my music with this colorful beast. Best deal I've ever had.
nice bro
Great review! I own a Martiarch and absolutely love it. I use this as the hub for my all-Moog, all-semi-modular rig (Grandmother, 2x Mother 32's and DFAM) and everybody plays together nicely. Soon I'll complete the "Mama's Family" with the Subharmonicon.
I love this machine, it's like I bought Boards of Canada in a box. Great review.
that box is stored in a much larger container called talent
Hearing that amazing pad, I was thinking “It's Hearts of Space in a box!”....^^
@@lovesteersthestars not just talent my man, work.
Such a beautiful sounding & looking synth. Thanks for the review. Thanks Moog.
This is still a really fantastic demo!!!
best instrument i've owed so far.
sweet
*THIS* is the review I've been waiting for!
More post review jam please! :) Great review.
Matriarch owners have been harping about a lack of an editor or global settings reset since it came out. Moog isn't listening I guess? Thanks for once again highlighting this enduring problem.
lovely. a moog matriarch review from nick. feels like christmas.
lol
a wonderful demo as always ! Bravo Mate !
fantastic demo. 33:03 love those stereo effects. such a beauty of a synth
What would be cool is if Moog got rid of the keyboard to save money and space then sold it as a one-stop intro to modular...call it the Stepmother. Like a new Model 10 for the masses. Maybe stack the pseudo modules into 2 rows instead of one long one, then put a handle and lid top on it for portability.
I love your reviews. Thank you for your work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Getting quite distracted there Nick! Over and over :-) It DOES sound lovely doesn't it!
I'm looking forward to the Patriarch. Should be killer.
@gridsleep ?
Better components, better synth, Papa Johns.
No chance
@@namenaim1560 Just curious, but why not?
And btw, the Grandfather and Father64 will be awesome.
I have a hard time seeing where any true synth geek wouldn't love to play with this synth. I'm not crazy about the price, but I do love it's synth credentials, specs, and tone.
$2gs for what is in my opinion, the best Moog ever. So inspiring. Love it. Selling my MiniMoog for this.
This is a step backwards to true sonic reality and an exellent demo.
i like the comment. a step backward to the real stuff. nice.
......... I still want one, quite badly actually. Sounds AMAZING.
That is a beautiful sound. The synthesizer sound I remember. Thanks.
My all time favorite synth ❤️ I use it on every song
That patch at 25:00 is tinged with genius.
When HE says its all there, you Know its all there... sounds so good...
11:13 nooooo. I wanted you to keep playing that :)
I've been looking forward to this for so long
Christ! That sound at 8:10 is just insane!
Mine arrives this week!
I have been hanging for this review! Gonna sell a lot of Matriarchs I bet.
@5:34 those OSCs sound soooo good. Even just plain, unfiltered, it''s gorgeous.
Lovely sounds, lovely demo!
Been waiting for this for a while. Thought I'd never see the review!
TRULY an incredibly synth
This synth caused me to open a new savings account and start saving for it last year; I've got enough now - but over that year I may have added a few smaller Moog/Arturia/Novation bits and bobs so I'm tight on space!
The Matrixbrute and Novation Summit also peak my interest; but man there is just something about the warmth of that Moog sound that brings a smile to my face. I think when we move into a house in a few years it'll be this, then the summit.
Of course the dreadbox typhon looks good too.
Man; thanks for this!
Daphoid I’ve had a lot of gear over the years, but nothing with as wide of a “sweet spot” as the Matriarch.
really awesome patch and demo at 24':49" !
Superb review mate, thanks!
Been waiting for this vid!
Best demo on UA-cam
I already have a Grandmother, I want a polysynth next... but The Matriarch is so tentative that I don't discard buying it. Damn... I wish I had more money.
If I had money to throw around, I would be this in a heartbeat over the Poly D.
Damn that’s sweet sounding
This looks like alot of fun
Sounds beautiful. Bit of sneaky John Foxx around 8mins in?
Good spot
great review!! thanks
What a great synth 😍👌🏻
The Moog Matriarch has always been on my radar. I loved the sound of my Moog Grandmother so I know this synth is a winner for sure! Great review!
Rik Marston Official
Hello Rik, you are the owner of the Grandmother, do you think it is worth paying the difference for the Matriarch, compared to the Grandmother?
Thanks and regards.
@@alanl.a8353 Yes, there is so much more the Matriarch can offer, keeping it's vintage Moog sound intact :)
Thanx!!!
😉
@@alanl.a8353 The GM has a spring reverb tank but the advantages over the Matriarch stop there. The Matriarch has more keys, more oscillators, almost 50 more patch points, more utilities, a stereo multi-mode filter, a sync-able stereo delay, and aftertouch, and I've probably missed some advantages.
My point? The Grandmother is a GREAT synth but the Matriarch is 100% worth the extra money. I'm jealous of Lisa Bella Donna's setup where she uses both right beside each other 😎
Polyphonic business is a serious matter, don’t mess with it !
Moog studio trio OR Matriarch ????
I just picked this up and ended up selling my original Korg Mono/Poly and my 1978 Multimoog. It replaced both.
Like nick, I was a bit disappointed to see yet another subtractive synth from moog but holy mother it sounds amazing.
I LOVE THIS!
best pads ever!
I think I’d need to take a course to play this thing.
Just sold my Sub37 and ordered a matriarch!
Alternate timeline confirmed.
Lovely!! Wondering what did you change in the global setup to have the sequencer playing without the hold button press?
any synths that are over 1000 dollars imo should have 3 prong connection in back for 120v usa standard cables
oh man absolutely right on
@@MediaMusik777 don’t know about that. i have this and the Korg MS-20, where the patching area is off to the side, and it takes a while to get into the back of your mind what jack corresponds to what. seems like this is a better idea
Since you said you guys are catching up? It would be awesome If you can do a review of the Korg "volca modular"!
And only for around £2000. I am clever enough to be a wealthy amateur so I will be buying 3 of these.
I‘m waiting for the real big daddy: The Patriarch.
DIV1NITAL same as this, but really uncomfortable talking about its feelings and leaves the Matriarch when you’re 12 to live with its secretary.
@@agincourtdb dude, what's THE GRANDFATHER going to be like?
Someone please make a loop of Nick and his monitor from 13:32 to 13:36 and set it to music :)
Great sound, but I absolutely despise the hidden parameters. It is so easy to forget what was set and I can waste hours trying to figure out what is wrong.
That's all sorted now with programs that control the whole thing just from your PC alone.
@@joeyxl3456 I no longer use a PC, gone DAWless. Thanks for telling me though.
@@joeyxl3456 what program?
@@tendingtropic7778 search for Fuzzycat Chonky
@@joeyxl3456 thanks! windows only I see....
Very good job !
11:00 - 11:12 kinda sounds like "Somewhere over the Rainbow", the Hawaiian version.
Dear god... I thought I was more interested in the Grandmother. Hearing this, I may well be wrong.
beautiful
Hi Nick. Great content, as usual. *Any chance you could ask the Moog people, during the livestream, what progress has been made with the known bugs in the Matriarch? Many of us owners love the sound, but would like the problems fixed-in particular, the extra MIDI data the Matri can spit out when it’s controlling another synth or module. *Would also be nice to have some control in the master settings of the 4 gates that control the oscs’ volume (on/off) in polymode-some way to disable some or all of them (by osc #) in the master settings, maybe? *Thanks!
I've passed this on to Moog who asked about firmware tweaks - so it might get sorted soon. - thanks
@@sonicstate Thanks for that!!
What a cool synth
The essence of Mooginess.
Bodzin time!
if I had only had 2,000 laying around
So lush
Hopefully Nick will Friday Fun it , with a drum machine and Big Sky ?
Beautiful chord at 14:29 it reminds me of "When It Rains" by Sikth
Am I the only one who thinks of Deadmau5 tracks when hearing this beast ?
So just to make sure you have to change the sequencer local settings to get the split patch to work
You have to switch local off on the keyboard as well. (After you've recorded the sequence) otherwise the sequence will transpose as well
@@sonicstate thanks i figured as much but appreciate the heads up before taking on this monumental patching endeavor
