  • Richard Attwood, interviewed here by Porter Press International, recalls his introduction to Steve McQueen’s ‘Le Mans’ film in 1971. He talks about his time as the main Porsche 917 camera car driver, along with the trials and tribulations this work entailed.

    Sir, your efforts are much appreciated as I still consider the film to be the best motor racing film ever. Incidentally, I had the privilege of actually see you race in a BRM V-12 at a very wet Longford, the final race of the Tasman Series for 1968 where you finished 4th to Piers Courage in a McLaren F2. A very fine drive in what were appalling conditions.

    Filming action scenes back then was tricky and challenging since robotics, with motors that could control the camera movements remotely, didn't exist at that time. So action scenes required required having cameras equipped with gearing mechanisms and springs that required hands-on control by technical people.

    Does anybody know where exactly the 2nd scene of the Le Mans movie was shot?. The one in which Delaney drives down the narrow avenue in his 911
