Having looked up a few 2k screens from the other 'monsters' (messrs van Dorp, McCabe, and Zeidler), it is hard to argue against JDS having the most composure, as you said. The others involved fast pushes at the start / finish, or increasing the stroke rate by some margin. This one is just ice cold.... but red-hot at the same time!

‘Composed test’, I should have said. Of course the others have composure, they are all rowing champions in their own right. I think my comment needed clarification

Great content like always Cameron :) would be interesting to hear your predictions as to who will be next to break the 5:35 record. I guess Zeidler and Van Dorp are two good candidates. I have seen them both doing 4x2k intervals lately where all sets were sub6. Outrageous! 🤯💪

You could do that time with but more strength and fitness 100%
Your start and dig deeper when you run at the end you still look fresh , 2k is hard knowing exactly when to push and how hard because it’s so easy to blow out
Hit a 1:14 pace recently and did a 1:21:4 at 500m in 2002 , the levels of yourself and the guy in the video is a LOT of dedication and the world pb are always next level
Thanks for all your videos !!

Regardless of what field of endeavor you look at - whether it be in the sports, the arts or the sciences - the elite of that field have the capacity to perform at an exceptional level and make it look easy. Its only when you try to replicate it yourself that you realise how difficult it is.

Hi - forgetting his monumental result for a tick - his approach is my preferred strategy. Start hard and settle to planned pace within 10 strokes. Then flat as a tack on both rate and split till last 500m then step up rate which usually gives about the same split due to end fade. I do this because I have zero ability to recover from mid event poisoning. If that makes any sense :) .

Crazy stuff. He makes it look so easy, like O'Sullivan making a 147. I guess that is the hallmark of a true champion. But he does not seem to falter at all! And does he even sweat? I wish we could see his HR, percentage of HRR, and body temperature. His thighs are like tree trunks and he has a monster-like back.

Love this, that video is an outrageous monstrosity, especially the way he maintains the pace, it is quite amazing, but every individual’s physiology is different, whereby JDS can hold a solid low pace till the finish, some people’s aerobic engines are built in a way that they prefer a quick start, above their 2k average pace in middle and sprint finish. Great analysis, have watched this over and over because technically he is very sound #yamsquad

His drag factor was 120, lower than I would have expected.
There is a lot to take from that video, his technique, a lot of foot lifting and barefoot too - is there even one bead of sweat on his forehead at the end?!

A few years back when I was doing HIIT, I could pull 1:25 or a little under for about three strokes, but I had to use a much higher drag factor. I'm pretty sure I pulled a 1:20 a few times, maybe for just one stroke, because I checked the wattage chart afterward one session and my best stroke was almost exactly 700 W.
At this kind of output, the handle comes flying at you like a projectile at a normal drag factor. I could barely move my arms fast enough to absorb the handle, much less apply force. On that erg, 5-6 on the lever felt normal, and I was probably using 9 for maximum power bursts. This slowed the power stroke enough that I could handle the handle.
I'm really not much of an athlete, but I am 6'5" so there's that. Also HIIT mainly trains explosive type II muscle movement. My 2 km time was likely not great.

I’m no expert, but it just seems like a flawless stroke. Massive power, quick hands at the finish. I guess at these sort of times, you can’t afford to have too many differences. And probably has huge lungs and heart to cope with the output

It may seem obvious, however, JDS did this not in a race situation. He must have had total connection with his race plan and the effort he was doing. In race situation, you can easily get distracted from your race plan. Yes, JDS was ultimately fit, however, he found the best path for him to run his 2k, he must have been supremely connected to his output and the effort over the 2k. Experience counts.
