I doubt those were made by him. I've seen that mark multiple times, both in the Cascades and in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I'm guessing that, given the small number of marks which can be easily cut into a tree with an axe, there is probably a lot of overlap between woodsmen.
Cody, all that climbing is turning you into a string bean. That's a great little hatchet. The great thing about softer, tougher steel is that you can restore the edge on a slab of stream-side sandstone. Try that with a chipped-edge Spyderco. Thanks for the great video.

Noiw im going to buy one of these from HF! cant wait to see this video hit 50k so you can climb that summit for us
The other important point is that someone could buy several of these, make the modifications that you did, and leave them in a couple of places. For instance, if someone had a hunting camp, this ax could stay at the camp. If one forgot to bring an ax, this one is there but doesn't represent a huge financial loss if something happens to it. If one remembers to bring another ax from home but two people are at camp, then two people can work on chopping chores.
That's why I have an axe or hatchet in each vehicle, and a basic tool kit, and a basic camping kit, etc. Any tuned axe is better than no axe. Shop estate sales, etc.
Cody, As a native Oregonian I’ve spent a lot of my time in the old growth forest, and I must say you do a fantastic job with your filming. I get the feeling of being out there every time I watch your videos. Well done.

To your speaking to the hardness of the steel, I live up here in Manitoba, and in winter, cold, Canadian winter (-40 celsius) I have had a gransfors axe chip a huge chunk out, because it wasn't soft enough for the cold, had a thin profile, and was brittle in these temps. I now use what I consider 'summer' axes (hard steel) and softer, cheaper, Canadian hardware store softer axes in winter. Nice review!
I've had one of those hand axes for nearly two years now and I've used and abused it removing stumps and roots and all that.. It's held up surprisingly well. It's also surprisingly ergonomic.. I recommend it.

Love the videos mate. Just a hint for river crossings. There are many techniques but one of the best is standing in a line facing up stream with hands on the person in fronts shoulders and the very front person bracing with a stick/paddle. The idea being the upstream person faces the brunt of the water force but breaking the water for those downstream whose job it is to hold down and support the person in front. The front person makes the calls for example yelling ‘step’ and everyone takes a step over. Great for families as Dad can go at the front and break the current for the young ones. I’m an Australian living in Alaska and have loved the channel!
Videos like this are really a blessing for outdoorsy cheapskates like me! In this case, harbor freight has some really solid products for the prices, and I am always on the lookout for tips on what to buy or avoid.
I used to be able to go on hikes like this, but my back problems have ended that. Now I can't walk a mile without my legs going numb. Take better care of yourself now young people, or you will pay for it later.
I bought the full size HF hickory handle axe several months ago, I've been so impressed with it I recently purchased another one (I liked the grain in the handle better than the first one I picked) and also grabbed the only hickory hatchet they had left! I was so excited to get one, I know silly... But it's a great thing when a $12 tool can give you the fizz. I'll call that a win every day of the week! Looking forward to putting the hatchet through it's paces.
I bought one a few years back and did a few modifications to it and it works just great. I sanded and polished the entire head before I sharpened it and sanded the handle and oiled it with several coats of mineral oil. I bought a sheath for it too. It is a great tool and much better than many others out there for a lot more money, just like you said.
Cody could you please do a video on the East wing 26" camping axe? It's a USA made company known for their Hammers so the handle vibration should be very little. It's available on Amazon
Can you imagine having to go back for your camera after this shot? 3:45-4:11 Cody is the GOAT for making every shot transition so seamless, yet we know he has to keep placing down a camera for every one of these shots. At least I think he's the camera man.
As soon as I saw your 1st video on the HB hatchet I went and bought one. I won't use it nearly to the extent you would nor can I justify an expensive hatchet. But after watching the first video and seeing the improvements you made and seeing how much you liked the tool I knew I had found what I've been looking for. Thank you much for the help. Now... Go show us that mountain summit!
But what was the test? What’s it like trying to chop enough wood for a camp fire and to use while building a shelter. Beautiful video, but not what was promised.
Thank you wranglerstar, I live in the city, No mountains for hundreds of miles. Your videos are an escape for me. Very appreciative for you and your family.
Well enough. Just the fact that it's steel makes it hold an edge pretty well, and it's not like you are going to be chopping down a forest with a hand axe.
Just based on his filing of it in the other video and what I can intuit from it and his comments in this video, it's a bit on the soft side. Seems well worth the price though and you can keep a sharpening palm stone or similar with you. I mean, that handle is just about worth the price even.
Love these Videos. Thanks. I went to Harbor Freight yesterday to buy the ax. I told the guy I saw a youtube video about it. They were all out. They did have the pruning saw. Today I went to walmart. They have a similar one. They also have a pruning saw. They are the Ozark brand. Looked pretty good. I will wait for the HF one.
Awesome, my thoughts exactly. Everyone gets so caught up thinking they have to have the best of the best that it almost stops them from enjoying the simple things. I have this hatchet and enjoy it alot. Thanks again for all the time you put into your videos.
I'd like to think Cody have a magic pack full of endless cameras and just leaves them around the forest 😅 so instead of going back to get them the forest is littered with camera's
The thing is, yeah it might not be the worlds greatest super axe made out of super rare steel that was forged in the heart of the sun. But you could pick up several of them, sharpen them all up and have reasonably good axes in different locations like the car, a bug out bag, an emergency kit, by the door to split kindling. It is weird how snobby people get over such things. Does it do it's job reasonably well? yes. Am i going to cry if it breaks? no. checks all my boxes
My favorite video so far. A tool I can just go out and buy. A clear how make it better. Then glorious nature and tips that actually work. Also the music in background is some of my favorite songs ever.
The dual alternator jokes never get old on my end ... and I'll bet good money that Cody still chuckles that we all took the well presented bait ; ) .... and hey, it's a cool, well equipped truck for sure and he's proud of it
I have an axe just like that i got it from a store in the UK called Wilkinson's, now called Willco. It cost £10 that was 20 years ago it is still going strong!

When wranglerstar was normal lol
Agreed. Sometimes the axe you have is better than the one you have to save for. Especially when you need firewood.
"it is what it is, and sometimes what it is, is good enough" thats actually really good saying sir take my upvote and my subscribe.
i really appreciate the like, keep on keeping on
Watched this video while making the "upgrades" to the harbor freight hatchet, awesome content, we need more God fearing men like you on social media!
Awful isnt it ?!?!
Looking forward to putting the hatchet through it's paces.
always happy to see another AXE video from Wranglerstar
I bought one a few years back and did a few modifications to it and it works just great. I sanded and polished the entire head before I sharpened it and sanded the handle and oiled it with several coats of mineral oil. I bought a sheath for it too. It is a great tool and much better than many others out there for a lot more money, just like you said.
Hearing a person rave about something just makes me wanna buy it and your demeanor in the video makes it so good
Cody could you please do a video on the East wing 26" camping axe? It's a USA made company known for their Hammers so the handle vibration should be very little. It's available on Amazon
I would share the Amazon link but UA-cam thinks it's spam
I may be incorrect but I believe that he has done an eastwing axe In the three-axe comparison video
@@Hank_Amarillo Cody is always testing things from Amazon. If you don't like it take it up with him not me
You’re not wranglerstar unless your lungs have 30% more capacity than normal
And dual alternators
@@wranglerstar Did you know your truck has duel alternators? Gives me the fizz
@@Giovanni_Litterini Wranglerstar's alternators fight to the death at 20 paces?
My lungs are also 30% bigger and I can swim under water the full length of a normal sized indoor pool and not come up till the other side.
My stomach is 30% larger. Didn’t know it until after I was married.
50K thumbs going up, I think it’s time we see the top of the world👍🏼
Yuppp
It looks like we are at 50K.
I would be interested in a video of you making a leather sheath for that axe!! Even a belt style one.
Don't know why, but this is literally the first time I ever willingly clicked thumbs up button when youtuber asks for it. Thank you for your work!
"Go ahead, I'll wait." 😆
I would have thought that your heart would be 30 times bigger, because you are so kind and thoughtful
Thank you for taking your time to show us. I enjoyed your video. Thank you very much.
Love these videos bud. Keep up the good work
But what was the test? What’s it like trying to chop enough wood for a camp fire and to use while building a shelter.
Beautiful video, but not what was promised.
The test was him taking it on a trip with him.
@@EatMyCupcake he went for a walk with it . . .
@@tylerhudgins2504 It felt good though
Let’s show that appreciation and get more likes on this video than the video where we made him come out here! 👍🏼
Also who else wants to see the top?
I concur!
Go to the top
Thank you wranglerstar, I live in the city, No mountains for hundreds of miles. Your videos are an escape for me. Very appreciative for you and your family.
You are very welcome
I love all your videos I have PTSD from military service and your videos always calm me down
DUDE there is just so much work in the first 42 seconds.. why are you not a director??
He is.. and a producer and a host of other titles.
Nice video!
I liked your video too bud!
My main question that I may have missed is: How well does it hold an edge?
Well enough. Just the fact that it's steel makes it hold an edge pretty well, and it's not like you are going to be chopping down a forest with a hand axe.
Just based on his filing of it in the other video and what I can intuit from it and his comments in this video, it's a bit on the soft side. Seems well worth the price though and you can keep a sharpening palm stone or similar with you. I mean, that handle is just about worth the price even.
0ver 10 years of videos I think by now... Priceless & Blessed by Cody. thanks bud
Thank you for your impressive library of videos.
You are a catalog of information no outdoorsman should go without.
Only 4k thumbs up left to go!
You got mine 👍
Always great content. Keep it coming as long as it serves you...
I have learned so much from this guy, absolute legend.
I can't believe how close this vid is to 50k. Hopefully it gets there; I'd love to see the hike up Olympus.
I just found your channel and it has become one of my favorites. Great video man.
17k likes in 16 hours.
Looks like Cody is going on a hike to the summit.
Lol nope
50k likes. Act accordingly.
This video just hit 50000 likes! you said you would go to the summit that you needed 6 more hours to hit! at 7:05
Cody owns a whole National Forest. I’m impressed.
These videos are what brought me to the channel, I stayed for the knowledge, wisdom and wholesomeness.
Cody, Been following you since your first Homestead in the mountains. Enjoy your presentations and have learned allot.
All I could think of when you crossed that stream was,..... he's gotta go back for the camera and do it again......wonder if you got feet wet.?....😄
Like old survival man videos. Great shot, but you feel for the guy when you realize hes gotta backtrack a mile and pick up the camera, lol.
@@lordfrz9339 for real. Thats commitment to getting the shot.
When are you gonna take us up the mountain
The thing is, yeah it might not be the worlds greatest super axe made out of super rare steel that was forged in the heart of the sun.
But you could pick up several of them, sharpen them all up and have reasonably good axes in different locations like the car, a bug out bag, an emergency kit, by the door to split kindling.
It is weird how snobby people get over such things. Does it do it's job reasonably well? yes. Am i going to cry if it breaks? no. checks all my boxes
Yup, that's pretty much why you'd want that many 😅😅
Plus, those swedish axes are good, but holy hell they're expensive.
