How To Strip Wires Without Wire Strippers-Using Pliers Instead
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 тра 2015
- In this video, I show you how to strip wires without using wire strippers. The process that I use involves pliers. You use the inside blade of the pliers to pierce through the sheathing around the wires, and then use the pliers to pull the sheathing off. Stripping wires without wire strippers is really easy, just follow the steps in this video and you'll be able to do it!

I am a young woman that's miles away from her father who usually fixes her mishaps, and let me tell you...these videos have possibly saved my life. Lol.
I found this really helpful. I tripped over a wire and broke it and needed to re-join the wires. I don't own a wire-stripper and wanted to try doing it without buying one for this one time I'll ever use it. It helps that I already have a sense of what to do once the wires are stripped - I've joined and capped wires before. You shouldn't try to join wires without researching how to do it properly. So far no fires. I'll write back if that changes!
Soo did it?
@@danielm7630 nope no fires
Applying pressure right now to the fresh cut from trying to strip wire with a razor...I like your gudance a whole lot more.
That’s a very creative way to cause a short

You are obviously not an electrician.
I'm just trying to get the copper man
I was surprised to see an old weld technician do this the other day. It actually works well if you know what you're doing.
I'm an Electrician apprentice and I can guarantee to you that is not way you should be doing it. When you nick the wire it ruins the integrity of it, eventually causing it to break and causing a fault in the electrical device.
Get good at it then, i am also and we use our pliers all the time. We dont even own wire strippers.
Hahaha "get good at it"? Wow your soo dumb look i can do it with or with out linemen but just cause your able to do it that doesnt mean you should do it.... Yes if i were to take 1 tool somewhere high or underground ill take my linemen i can do it all with then but still dont be that 1 guy haha..
Gno my comment wasnt meant to come out in a smart ass way. I was just trying to say if you get good at stripping with pliers there is no need for wire strippers.
@@Matthewrandone i agree 100%
Ur an apprentice so YOU shouldn't do this only expirienced
Ya, he nicked the common and the hot. They will eventual break after changing outlet boxes or too much movement. Plus no a shock hazard at the nicked areas. I have done electrical for years and stopped using wire strippers because of the easiness to score or nick the wires. I always use a razor knife to open the main case. Then use the small area on the back side of the pliers to squeeze the insulation on the wire. This splits the wire insulation casing and the you break off the plastic on both sides. No more accidentally ruining the wire. .
Its neutral and hot
@@mrpanda2655 It's the same thing in some places..
I'm currently doing a Trade course and for some reason in our first lesson we had to use pliers instead of wire strippers to pull back the insulator / sheathing.
Its easier and quicker to use pliers, we dont even own wire strippers, waist of money and are not needed.
@@Matthewrandone If you know the sharpness of your pliers' cutting edge...Most journeyman I have seen won't even use their pliers, let alone apprentices (That's if they even know how to do this!)...They make wire strippers for a reason why risk doing something that you know may compromise the integrity of the conductor?
@@mikenormandy9250 most sparkys in Australia use their pliers, don't see too many with wire strippers
My heart rate went up by about 50 beats per minute watching this. Maybe you could use this method in a serious pinch, but good luck convincing an insurance company to pay out when your house burns down. If you are dealing with line voltage, and you don't have proper wire strippers, I forbid you to ever do this.
No you never do this you go to a hard ware store get what you need And go back to the job
I need the inner copper think
Thankyou
You're a f***ing lifesaver. Perfect f***ing video!
Thanks for the job security! Your chanel shouldnt have anything to do with electrical work
lol im learning this for my grade 5 school i cant do it my classmates are doing it good
I am looking for a way to strip all of the wire. I'm not an electrician but sure wouldn't use that to make a connection.
I don’t advise it but seems like a cool trick
Genius
Good advice👍
And if this was an energized circuit... BOOM
Why would you be stripping a cable on an energised circuit?
@@cooper512 we always work live when we are doing finishing
U guys ever have to strip the hot with linesman’s live? zapped tf out of me
Don't do that.
He said his striping was “perfect”? You can see where he bit into the insulation of the wires. 😆
So helpful....thank you!
Don't ever use your pliers to strip insulation off what will become current carrying conductors...This dude fucked up the insulation of the wires and even scored the wires JUST trying to remove the outter cable jacket....Wire strippers exist for a reason, just use them...Your JW will be thankful you did when the conductor isn't compromised by you putting a score into it
obviously not an electrician....... I'm cringing just watching him trying to strip romex wire
U can see the wires are squished
Maann...if i did dat..im gonna get fired
The damage he just done to both the single insulation and the conductor is one of the MANY reasons why these people should not play with things they are not qualified to do!......Can we watch him work on gas next and then liven up his installation??? I think someone might be getting a call if he's stiil alive!
Get some wire cutters, not pliers, split the end of the wire by cutting it where the earth is, grab the earth with the cutters and pull it, it will split the sheathing with no effort, pull until it's long enough then cut off the insulation, no nicks, no risk of cutting through the other cables, this was painful to watch.
On the thinner wires you can just apply pressure and pull. No need to ‘eat’ around it
Thank you!
Yo man. I’ve worked in Europe and the USA. Europeans normally get very confused when they see you using real wire strippers
im done😭
Arc fault waiting to happen
Definitely not the way to do it. If you cut the wires flush with the outer insulation to start, you can then peel out to the side either the live or neutral cable until you can get a grip on the earth and pull it down along the middle , the copper from the earth wire will cut the outer insulation down the middle until you get to your desired length. Removing the insulation from the single wires is as simple as giving a tight squeeze with the cutter portion of the pliers and pulling outwards, it does take some practice to do so but you dont need to ring the pliers around the wire 10 times as shown in the video, the cutting portion on the pliers look really blunt.
Mines not coming off
Did I saw a nick?
Thats a combination pliers not a side cutting pliers
Its not "linesman pliers " its linemans plier.
RIP inner cores
Unsure if this is a joke
Do not follow the advice given in this video. I would never strip wire this way, nor would I entertain the idea. For me, a stanley knife is the way to go; a little time consuming, but if you want a tidy cut, then spend time. Wire strippers are probably better, but I find them tricky to use properly without cutting straight through the conductors. Very poor video, sorry.
fro0tyl0opy87 agreed with the utility knife score the insulation then twist and pull off no damage to conductors, finished product looks clean and best part change the blade when it gets dull instead of getting meh results with old strippers. My utility handle of choice is the Milwaukee fast back compact for now.
Came here to say that lol
As an electrician this is the stupidest thing I've seen. I don't care if it works
You're appreciated but I could do that in 25 seconds......"squish" is that proper terminology
How pls say in detail or anyy video,
No
i just did it with my nails lol
Hahaha, be careful not to damage them!
which one, the nails or the wire? lmao
jhred15 hahaha
This is NOT how you would do this...This is EXACTLY WHAT NOT TO DO (The conductors were scored just removing the ROMEX (NMSC) jacket!!!). Any good Journeyman will tell their apprentice to use wire strippers....If you practice enough, YES you can use your side cutters or dikes to score and strip the jacket but you DO NOT want to score the actual copper conductor (which was done in this video JUST TAKING THE ROMEX jacket OFF)....It is easier to strip sire with your pliers if you are stripping a small amount off the conductor, like 1/4"-3/4"...The more insulation you want to cut off, the more challenging this becomes with your Pliers...JUST USE WIRE STRIPPERS...NO ONE IS ever going to yell at you for doing it the RIGHT WAY....
This video went on way too long than it had to.
perfect cut? are you kidding? kid dont do videos on things you are no good at.
This is not good advice. Wire strippers are cheap. Your house burning is not. If you genuinely cant afford wire strippers, you should just ask an electrician.
Nice new pliers b.t.w.
Ob One the white/ neutral was kinda chewed up so was the ground
Really? i am an apprentice electrician and using wire strippers are a waist of time, we use our pliers for everything!
Matthew Randone it takes time to do a proper job. Everything you install is not just a job it could also be your future resume.Never sacrifice the qaulity of your work for time. That being said if you can strip wire with pliers without damage to the conductors have at it, but next time you use that method really look at the copper and see of your nicking it.
Brent Sido nah I don't nick the copper or sheathing mate, just go at it on a dead cable and keep practicing, I got the hang of it in a couple months.
Just make sure it's not plugged into anything
Terrible advice, please never do this for a wire you intended to actually use with electricity. There are proper tools for this for a reason. The integrity of the inner conductors was shot by the time the outer jacket was off. Awful
Shameful. Not good advice.

You are endangering people with your horrible method. This is not safe. My only hope is that you are obscure enough that nobody injures themselves or their property following your ignorant video.
You clearly dont work as an Electrician. Strippers were made for a reason.
This is butchery - no sane person should follow your example.
