  • Bear studies and turkey season are in our sights on Kentucky Afield television this weekend, Feb. 27 and 28.
    Follow Kentucky Afield television to Letcher County, where snowy mountainsides set the backdrop for black bear research. Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, with assistance from University of Kentucky researchers, climb into the bears winter dens to count cubs and place radio-tracking collars on hibernating mother bears. Research on bears - one of the forests most secretive animals - helps us to better understand growth and travel patterns of these mammals.

      Humans can't even treat each other with concern...all animals aren't any different

      And what to do when their numbers start plummeting bc all the older males never let the cubs get enough food and more over never let the young males have a chance to mate? This is why professional ethical hunting helps them survive more than anything else humans can do for them

    Isn’t this a gazillion times better than hunting a beautiful animal? I’ll never understand the need to kill something for fun. Much better to help it live a full and healthy life.

      Population control is also very important to bear survival. Most Hunter’s aren’t hunting “for fun.” They are hunting for food. To stock up for Winter. Relying on your local grocery store to always have meat is a stupid thing to do. Shortages are a fact of life, and FOOD is a necessity.

      seriously can't they microchip the bear like they do for dogs?

    • @willgibson2924
      @willgibson2924 2 роки тому +1

      @@amaliasafaryan4256 Microchips are great, but are far more expensive and one-time use. Collars are noninvasive, safe, and are often designed to fall off after a certain amount of time, after which they can be picked up and used again. The reason they can't just be like your dog's microchip is that your dog's microchip is designed to hold information accessible only when they're brought into a pound or vet, so runaway dogs can get back to their owners. These collars- or microchips in some cases- send out radio signals and/or gps locations so they can be easily found again or their movement can be tracked, which is much more complicated (and expensive) than holding a name and phone number. The collars also don't cause any behavioral changes after a very short period of the animal getting used to them- kinda like wearing a necklace.

      @@willgibson2924 "...kinda like wearing a necklace" says the man, lol. Maybe like wearing a bondage collar. The biggest thickest spikiest one they make haha. Jokes aside, I feel really bad for the ones that r collared because I'd imagine they get itchy- at the very least.

    Did he say he wants people and bears to interact more and get used to one another to be able to coexist more easily I understand the reasoning behind it do bears don't see us a major threat and are less likely to attack us out of fear or even for food but its just not that simple
