      I think it's important to remember that Richard's greatest strength was his mind. He had a couple of things going for him. He wasn't arrogant, first of all. He constantly looked for people who could give him good advice, and he was always seeking the best information. He totally disregarded flatterers. Whatever situation he was in, he looked for the people who could actually tell him the truth and give him the information he needed for success. He then translated that into class A leadership. If his people were in danger, he would personally go to their aid. He would not sacrifice his men, and he would not ask his people to take risks that he himself would not take. This made the people around him trust him. During the Third Crusade, a wide variety of factions coalesced around Richard's leadership because he was such an effective and responsible leader. Even groups that were inherently hostile to him, such as the French, mostly cooperated with him during the Crusade. Richard, more than anything, is a model of effective leadership. He was also a great fighter and warrior, but that was the icing on the cake more than the fundamental key to his success.

      Richard the 3rd would have been titled "Richard the GOAT" if this idea of slang was available. I love being a Brit, as our history goes back thousands of years. After Richard was sadly killed by a stray crossbow man on the way home. I truly believe he would have eventually conquered Jerusalem eventually. It was said that in a time when men averaged 5'10 he stood over 6ft tall. And like any king of England he was constantly at odds with the bloody French. In fact if he had actually married King Phillipe's sister and got the full support of the French the 3rd crusade may have ended a success. However you must remember as he wasn't the last of the "lead from the front, cerebral warrior king". Afterwards, a few years later, another brilliant prince of Wales who was anointed king after his father and brother died. The be great and all conquering long Henry the 5th. Another brilliant leader and warrior, who my it only calmed internal civil unrest, but also after a few sieges skirmished and a little know battle we Brits like to mention on occasion (Agincourt 😁) secured the French throne from Charles 5th or Charles the mad because his belief he was made of glass.......gotta love bonkers medieval history lol

    I'm confused, I thought Salah Ad-din was the first Sultan of both Egypt and Syria, from a Kurdish decent, and the founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty. What do you mean by Turks in your video? I'm genuinely confused, no offense. I thought the term TURKS was for the Ottoman Empire.

    • @RealCrusadesHistory

      Saladin was Kurdish, but much of his cavalry was Turkish in origin.

      @@RealCrusadesHistory oh okay, I always thought he is leading mostly syrians or other arabs absorbed in his army. So this means he basically inspired or laid down the foundation for the Ottoman Empire specifically Osman 1 hundred years after his death. Salah Ad-din was one hell of a leader dignified, from his battles with Baldwin to Lionheart. I don't know if this is true, but he believes in the saying "Kings don't kill kings". And the infamous movie line "I didn't give you the cup".

    Saladin's lost at Arsuf changed his strategy. Knowing he could not defeat Richard in battle he started a scorched earth campaign.

    • @aburoach9268
      @aburoach9268 2 роки тому

      Honestly, I don't get why, because he could've won this battle with a very one sided victory like Surena did at Carrhae / the key mistake his troops made was dismounting and getting too close to shoot without having their horses close by in case they needed to flee quickly / If the knights charge, they counter it with a feigned retreat & ambush, If the knights don't charge they'll continue to weaken the crusader army with arrows causing lots of wounded men & many dead horses / so basically he could use the same strat on richard again but without that careless mistake

    • @doylekitchen9795
      @doylekitchen9795 2 роки тому +2

      @@aburoach9268 Several reasons:
      1) He was intimidated by Richard. He would not see him to face, saying Kings do not negotiate with Kings;
      2) Like with Baldwin IV, Saladin lost more than he won when faced with a good sound general. Hattin was an aberration;
      3) His men did not trust him. They would not garrison another city in fear that he would play with their lives like he did at Acre. This was written by Ibn al-Athir and Ibn Shaddad;
      4) His army needed rest. They had been hard at it since Hattin. Some had not been home in years;
      5) He lost almost half of his army at Arsuf. 7,000 were killed and a bunch just went home. He had to get more soldiers;
      6) Richard would have used the same strategy also. Wait until they get close and commit, then charge. The Latins also had crossbows and archers. The Muslims were losing men and horses also.
