  • In this episode I walk you through step by step how I like to do my water changes with natural seawater. I'm definitely enjoying the benefits of having access to natural seawater and now with the addition of dosing ESV B Ionic my corals are looking even better. Hope you enjoy this video. Please subscribe and hit that notification bell to stay update when I release a new video. Please comment and let me know what you think of doing water changes and using natural seawater. Thanks for watching!!!

    Great video!!! A lot of reefer discussions say how bad it is to use natural sea water from an inland (close to shore) source because of chemicals in the water from boats and run off from beaches etc. Also saying you’d have to take a trip like 5 miles or more out to get usable water. I’m not sure where your sourcing your water but seems to me like you’ve proven them all wrong 😉 You have a beautiful and successful reef as it looks to me 😁 Keep up the great work! Thanks for the upload !

      Thanks! I purchase my water from my LFS and yes the water is collected via boat a few miles out. I’m not sure of the distance. I’ve never had any issues and my corals always respond as soon as new water is introduced. 👍

    Are you still into reefing? If so I do like the light schedule you are using and would like to have that schedule . Saw a video you made 4 years ago , that you modify of
    Bixby.

    Do you perfom any treatment to the NSW after you retrieve it from the ocean?
    How long can You store it?

    I know this video is a bit older but just thought I'd let you know I had the same thing from my skunk cleaner shrimp everytime I would do a water change shortly after the one would release the baby's and the fish would go crazy. I had a pair of cleaners do it routinely for about 3 years. Also I wonder if using the natural sea water allows the introduction of micro plank tons that arent available in our tanks usually which in return supplies a food source to the corals that they get in the wild but dont in our home aquariums. Your tank is spectacular.

      @jsreefs5576  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yes I’ve since found out that it is a combination of my shrimp and hermit crabs that will release baby’s after a water change. Very strange though. Thanks a lot.

    Nice setup ive subbed..what light is that on your refuge? Oh and i also use sea water catalina island water actually and i just make sure i dose alk and calcium accordingly...that brings up the thought of testing it for that prior to refilling

    • @jsreefs5576
      @jsreefs5576  5 років тому +1

      Ernesto Sanchez Thanks! The light on my fuge is just the simple amazon Par 38 bulbs. One is blue and white the other is blue and red. I’ve tested my levels coming in and I tend to allow my parameters to stay close to natural seawater levels so there’s not much fluctuation when I do water changes! Curious to know what Catalina islands water comes in at. If you ever test it please let me know the results!

    Nice set up man! Question about the light on the refugium? What kinda is that one? I know is led but I’m interested to get one for my refugium, I used just regular. Led cold white 5000k

      I run a reverse light cycle from my main display for the most part. My cycle fluctuates between 10-12 hours depending on if I have any algae growth in the display.

    Do you ever worry about pest being introduced from the sea water?

    • @jsreefs5576

    I know it's a bit too late to ask, but was cycling the tank w natural seawater is any different from using salt mix? or was there even a cycling required since you r already using a natural sea water

    • @MettaTrance
      @MettaTrance 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Skippy. I didn't make this video but I can help a little. You will still need to go through a cycle when you start your reef. You aren't so much cycling the water itself as the rock, the sand and surfaces etc, this is where the bacteria lives, not so much is in the water body itself. A product like ATM Colony will help you get you started :)

    • @jsreefs5576
      @jsreefs5576  5 років тому

      I’m not sure how that would work. I’m wondering if the different salt would affect your parameters. Are you sure it’s natural seawater at 1.020?
