The surf and resulting skate culture of the 70s changed the world. Music, fashion, attitude even food changed as a result of the 70s skate culture. Overnight, z town became anytown usa. Punk, rap , hop hop was the results musically. It all started with jazz though.

Yeah when I saw Midwest kids wearing op shorts and van shoes and talking like spicioli ten years before spicoli, I knew something big was happening. Unfortunately it was the last gasp before participation trophies and vans taking kids to soccer practice and right back to their bedroom prisons and their electro leashes.

It didn't start with jazz anymore than it started with blues or any other genre since the beginning of sound

That Gil Scott Heron line was interesting.. It was originally banned to write anything here in north, specially in stone. They are cursives (cursing). Good video. Thanks!

The first raps were done by the Irish with their limericks set to a beat. There was a young man from Nantucket . . . Was one they did.

I don't know when rap became skateboard music because in the 80s, I never heard anyone listen to rap while skateboarding. I remember pulling out the cardboard to try and breakdance when I was a kid, and listening to some in the early 90s, but had zero to do with my skateboarding phase. I guess you being the first to add it to skate videos might be when it started, so what year was that? Takes years to become part of the mainstream skate scene though. Rap hip hop in the 40s and 60s is a huuuuge stretch. I hope this isn't you getting into the AI music crap. Making me cringe with that beat accompanying songs that had zero to do with them.

I imagine it's regional but in California we were listening to rap since Rappers Delight and Grand Master Flash in 1979. Goin Off was made in 86 and released in 87.

@@RealSkateStories Rap was a thing here in Texas as well, just wasn't part of the skateboarding scene in the 80s as far as I am aware. Maybe 90s and on.

No. Skateboarding music is whatever skaters listen to and there is a wide variety of skaters and musical taste out there.
