The yodeling is simply called a “falsete”, which literally translates to falsetto in Spanish. Singing falsetes in Huapangos was popularized by Miguel Aceves Mejía in his time. Arturo Vargas, the musician singing, has perfected his technique with the help of breath control, his natural high register, and proper technique.

Mexico and Ireland have a great history together, from the migrants who moved to Mexico to the St. Patrick's Brigade which helped Mexico out during the Mexican-American War. Who maybe you have an ancestor that dates back to this and that's why you like Mariachi so much. Also, I just assumed you're Irish, but if I'm wrong you have the right to be mad lol.
@@toolrammsteindeftones You beat me to the punch. Many Irish immigrants fought for the Americans but were shunned because of their religion and were treated unfairly which is why many of them jumped sides to the Mexican army. Mexico offered them citizenship and the opportunity to practice their faith for they both were from Catholic cultures. Hence the name the battalion was given “Los San Patricios” (or Saint Patrick’s Battalion) Love this story, also a very cool fact is that former Mexican President Alvaro Obregon is a descendant of an Irish family. So glad you reacted to this video. I got to see Arturo Vargas(name of singer) perform this live w/ Mariachi Vargas about 4 years ago. Breathtaking.....
The “yodeling” sound you mentioned is called a Falsete in Mexico which translates to Falsetto. It’s commonly used in a lot of Mexican music folklore. This song is probably the most famous example of this tradition. I would also recommend “La Malgueña” with Aida Cuevas for this type of music
As mentioned before, the "falsete" is common in mariachi music, look for Miguel Aceves Mejía and specially a song called "Malagueña Salerosa" or just "La Malagueña". The Mariachi Vargas has its own version too, enjoy!
Here are the lyrics for your enjoyment and a better appreciation of the song: *The Shepherd* The shepherd goes with his flock At the breaking of dawn Going down the trail From the mountains to the meadow He goes musicalizing his complaints With his reed flute Followed by his sheep As if it was a spell Chorus: The flute Of the shepherd Ay, ay, ay Sings like this The shepherd goes back again As the sun is setting down He's going up the hill To keep his flock With his flute he's calling One by one his sheep And he communicates them His joys and his sorrows Chorus: The flute Of the shepherd Ay, ay, ay Sings like this

Thank you for explaining how to properly hold out those long notes! I was one of the ones that thought you had to tighten the stomach, lol. I've always been impressed at how Sinatra could hold a note for 12 seconds straight without shaking! Such great technique with both these singers
David Zaizar and Miguel Acevez Mejia were the kings of falsetto, or "falsete" in Mexico, and it's only one style of mariachi singing, the hardest one to sing.

I had the opportunity of seeing Arturo Vargas sing this song twice and throughout the years that he sings this song the more control he gains in his ability to hold this high range notes. He also been known to go even higher and holding those long note even longer especially the "el flatin" and "del pastor" parts in the finale.
