  • In this video, I embark on a creating the World's Smallest Unraid Server. Using a single board computer - the ZimaBoard - this compact powerhouse consumes a mere 6W, making it both eco-friendly and efficient.
    But don't let its size fool you. This tiny titan is fully equipped to handle a range of tasks. Dive in with me as I set up and demo Emby for media streaming, orchestrate smart home automation with Home Assistant, and fortify network security with a fully functional pfSense VM.

      @@SpaceinvaderOne Talking of low power NAS's... have you backed the LincStationN1 campaign on IndieGoGo?
      (Apart from the Zimaboard, I don't think you can get a Smaller, More Compact, Low Power UnRAID server)
      I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the N1 and in particular on the Optimal All-SSD configuration for UnRAID!
      i.e. I'm keen to keep the ability to Expand the array over time: Formatting all the SSD's as Hybrid ZFS would still have the lesser ZFS advantages, if not Bit-Rot/File-Integrity protection. Are there any remaining issues with UnRAID and SSD Trim and Parity Disks?
      P.S. I'm aware that ZFS Expansion may (many many years later) be coming to production. But in could still be a long-while before it comes to UR, and if every Watt counts (e.g. when running off battery in a van) would UnRAID's option of powering down unused drives make much difference in load, compared to a ZFS Pool keeping all the Flash-Drives constantly working!

      At $280 (on IGG) the N1 is only around $80 more than the ZimaBoard (with a case that includes storage for 2x 2.5 + 4x NVMe, a more modern/capable N5015 CPU/GPU, double the memory at 16GB... PLUS it includes a $59 UnRAID Basic licence!!! 😀

    A discussion that I've had with a friend was about the fact that most small boards still have a 1Gbit Port instead of a 2,5Gbit or higher. For an internal network it would be nice to have higher bandwidth. But seeing that more motherboards get shipped with a 2,5Gbit port these days, I guess it's a matter of time before small boards will incorporate them as well.

    • @SpaceinvaderOne
      @SpaceinvaderOne  8 місяців тому +1

      No I was hoping to use the eMMC too, but as the main array drive (really as a place holder) and have the main data on a separate raid 0 pool on the 2 sata drives. But could never get the eMMC to show. You can see the controller in the hardware so you could probably passthrough the whole controler with the eMMC to a vm. So run the native CasaOS off the eMMC but as an Unraid vm.

    How do you switch between which device handles the transcoding?

    • @SpaceinvaderOne
      @SpaceinvaderOne  10 місяців тому

      Very briefly, to use hardware transcoding , you first need to add your gpu/igpu to the Emby/Plex template. If you're working with NVIDIA GPUs, make sure the NVIDIA driver is already installed on Unraid. On the other hand, for Intel QuickSync, you'll want to add the iGPU to the template and also get the 'Intel GPU Top' plugin set up. Once that's sorted, you can head over to Emby's settings to enable hardware transcoding. And, if you go into advanced mode with multiple GPUs you can pick and choose which device you'd prefer to use.

    i want to do something like you ve done with the pfsense as a virtual machine as a basic router , but with vlans and a vlan switch to seperate them to physical cables and diferent networks (wifi , iot in a separate vlan , guest wifi, lan , modem ) , i think i can make it with one network card .

    • @SpaceinvaderOne
      @SpaceinvaderOne  10 місяців тому +1

      Hey there! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
      In the video, I used two distinct physical NICs (br0 for LAN and VLANs and br1 for WAN). However, br0 was actually handling 2 vlans and regular LAN traffic from the pfSense VM to the network switch.
      So you're thinking of taking it a step further by using a single NIC to handle both the WAN coming into the pfSense VM and the LAN (plus VLANs) going out. Defo an ambitious setup! It does add complexity. In virtualized environments like this, VLAN tags can sometimes get "trapped" or not forwarded correctly, especially when dealing with bridged virtual NICs.You'll need to ensure VLAN configurations are correctly set up on the pfSense VM, the Unraid host, and your switch. Again thanks for watching 🙂

    Regarding Emby and video transcoding. I don't think it's important today now that all chromium based browsers support hevc. You can use Chrome, Edge, Safari etc and play hevc content with direct play. Apart from desktop on all other devices we would use, Emby has apps that can handle hevc with direct play. On desktop only Firefox left not to support hevc, but I just don't care. If Mozilla doesn't care, I don't for them too and use another browser like Chrome or Edge. I just don't see the point or transcoding anymore.
