    I am concerned about Paralives sustaining financially, but I think the first thing we have to think about is the goal of Paralives is ‘updates’ to the game not inflated DLC packs to justify a price point. Which other games have sustained themselves with by simply charging for the game instead of being ‘free’ bait to sell overpriced packs.
    Also, if they make a good game they can make OTHER games…maybe smaller ones still in the simulation genra, I know its retro but people use to make a game, sell it, then make OTHER games and sell those. I do see this as an option a few years down the line for Paralives studio, not within months of launch.

    I am not all that concerned. Just look at Stardew Valley, another open-ended role-playing game with a lot of free game enhancing patches, almost nine years old and still going strong. If Paralives manages to reach that level of quality (and I believe it will), its developers have nothing to worry about.

    • @b1oodymario

      stardew is a success story. statistically, very few are, but there def are successes. paralives is a bigger project but also with a bigger team, so what Id like to do is look around and see if there are examples that are comparable- course nothing will be perfect because it's a full life sim vs a niche life sim. I think onward of the top concerns will be making enough for all on the team. I do hope they can- and am not, of course, saying that they can't. They do as of now command a substantial fan base

      @@SimmerErin A lot of indie games, Paralives included, started as one man projects - after all, The Sims were a one man project that nobody believed in at the beginning (and finally developed into one corporation project that nobody believes in anymore). Some projects remained solo, others acquired collaborators (Paralives again, or Manor Lords), still others were started by a small group that remained small (Workers & Resources, Foundation); and even the ones that were not a spectacular success have a loyal fan base (Saelig, for example). i personally trust the team's judgement as they have not given us any reasons to doubt them. if they think they'll be fine then i'll believe that too unless given a reason not to. as said many times this has worked for other games so why not now? and i personally wouldn't mind backing their patreon for longer either, i've been a patron for years and loved it the entire time if they decided to just keep it running as is with development updates etc i'd also continue my subscription
    i'm also not worried about the playtests, they did the same style play tests for the build mode already and that seemed to have went fine and for any more fine tuning we have the early access, that's kinda what that's for. if anything is buggy players will let them know and they'll fix it. we all know that that's what early access will be like, with bugs and little problems that will be worked on as we go.
    i think as long as everyone remembers that a game in early access is NOT finished it'll be fine, the sims 4 base game (the finished one) kinda sucked on release, it was missing sooo many features. to expect what games like the sims 4 offered after several years and in several paid dlcs, in paralives for early access is ridiculous. some people need a bit of a reality check imo

    Stardew valley launched in 2016 and as of Feb. 2024 has sold 30 million copies with an estimated revenue of $450 million. Even factoring for cost of production, it's assumed that ConcernedApe has made around $45 mil in profit so that's an average of $5.5 mil per year. Considering that Paralives will most likely draw the same players that make up Stardew's player base, I think it's safe to say that having no paid DLC is not going to be a problem. It may take a year or two to really get the ball rolling, but if they've planned ahead it won't be an issue. Ideally, they shouldn't launch until they can pay for all of their employees for 2-3 years without any game profits, same as when starting a small business.

    I can't help but think of one of my favorite indie games, Ship of Heroes, which recently announced that they would release the game next year. The problem is that they have announced this for five years already. This is not vaporware, I have been one of their testers for several years, as have some well-known gaming websites. But they keep coming up with new features, while some of the basics like animations are still only almost-ready. Unlike Paradox Tectonics, the indie team does not have a corporate financier who can say "Enough is enough". And so they have been almost ready to release for all this time. The technical name for this is "feature creep" and it is not limited to games. When I was a business software developer in the 1980es, this was already a thing.

    Paralives is basically being made by like 3 people and is being financially supported with, essentially, good will.
    I think the best thing they can do is build a strong base to the game by not getting too complicated.
    One of the main benefits of making all future expansions non-paid is that, when they build new features, they can integrate it more cohesively with the codebase, but that will only benefit them if the codebase is solid.

    If there's something that I have learned from other games is that as a gamer it is better to be patient. Rushed games or DLC/updates can end up terrible. (The Sims franchise, apart from other games has already proven that). It's especially important to be patient with smaller teams. God knows how many complains I've seen people making on Twitter to CA for Stardew Valley updates, for example, and I'm just like, Jeezus....give that man a break (or his team, cause if I'm not mistaken he's not working alone anymore).

    A lot of games are able to sustain themselves with just the money they earn through sales. Indie games, even indie games with a small team like Paralives, don't have the same expenses as AAA companies do. A lot of the money AAA companies need is for their executives, senior producers, marketing staff, etc. This is not something indie games have to worry about. I still feel like they could develop classic EXPANSION PACKS (like The Sims 1-3) with a ton of content and sell them for like $20. There's nothing wrong with that. I don't have doubts for Paralives to have a way to sustain themselves, at least for one year or two. But I definitely agree with the fact it's a "wait and see" situation. Some people have said "Stardew Valley is fine!" But Stardew Valley doesn't have a team of thirteen people and is a farming game which doesn't really need more updates. Meanwhile, a life simulation game could probably always get more updates to simulate any type of life. So I believe Paralives will be okay as long as its player base accept that it will be a limited experience. For now the Paralives team has expressed what their limits are and that's why I like their work and communication. For me it makes complete sense that they put forward other games because I do believe the team members play multiple games.
    I'm worried though that the sims community and the fraction of it that will go to Paralives is mainly made of "one game player" - the sims - and their expectations will be too high. Thus in my opinion the first impression by Paralives is kind of doomed to be bad for the majority of the sims community but still considered a great game by its current supporters that follow the development and essentially more knowledgeable people in video games. The best counter attack Paralives can do to this first impression is what they already do great: communication and transparence. I hope it will be enough in the long run but my expectations for the game are low in general and I think it's key for people that will play the game to not disappoint themselves (and not because it's a bad game, just because it can't realistically do everything).

    Weather friends can provide good feedback or will be biased is heavily dependent on how the playtest is conducted. "Hey, here's the game, let us know what you think" is going to be even weaker with friends than it is with randos (unless those friends are also game devs or are otherwise used to giving feedback), while "Hey, come over, play this game while we film you and screen record the gameplay" is going to get a lot better feedback with friends or strangers than (outside of finding niche bugs and interactions) since they'll then get a bunch of footage of what the pain points that the people playing might not even notice are, and also see real time the ways people are gravitating to playing the game (and that's not really something you can get public playtest feedback on that easily.
    They have a Massive Public Playtest coming up - Early Access - so them doing a closed family and friends playtest prior to it doesn't concern me too much.
    I said it closer to the Only Free Expansions announcement, but if they're unable to fund the studio based on base sales of Paralives, given the amount they're funding their studio from from Patreon, I'm not sure they'd have the sales figures for paid DLC to really help much. While we've been asked not to speculate about price so I'm not going to state the results when I've done this, I think it's informative to plug in some possible prices, sales numbers, and factor in steam's cut (and possibly other expenses - I recently heard 30% for the amount of money that eventually gets to the studio but that was accounting for taxes and other things already being taken out of their patreon money; steam's cut is 30% atm) and then compare that to how much they're getting on patreon at the moment just to get a ballpark of how many months of development various scenarios would give the studio.

I doubt they'll all become multi-millionaires and buy a huge studio or something but they'll live comfortably off this game even if the Patreon drops off, which I also doubt it will. A lot of people continue to support Patreons after content is released simply because they like the team, but additionally with their plan to continue updating the game people will want to continue to get news about updates. Lots of indie games with way less eyes on them do perfectly fine financially.

I can't even look at the Sims without thinking of all of the money I have given them over the years while they do NOTHING to fix even the smallest of problems in the nightmare mess of a game that they now have. I think it's natural to "compare games." I worry more about people having unrealistic expectations because of what they *hope* the game will be. For instance, I suspect that one of the reasons that Life By You didn't make it is because it tried to hard to be "The Sims but more what the players want" that they "bit off far more than they could chew." I feel that Paralives has been better about reigning in expectation. And as you say, InZoi and Paralives are very different games. They will probably both have people who love them (and will play both!)
    For me, I'm going to stick with TS4 (although I've been playing TS3 lately. It always makes me appreciate TS4 more, even if I can't have the extensive "World Adventures" that I love in TS3 in TS4.)

    • @SimmerErin
      @SimmerErin  23 дні тому +1

      yes, it is natural to compare. I think how the comparisons are handled is where the nuance lies. for instance, I do sometimes feel at least at first Paralives by some was expected to do many things that would be challenging pace and budget wise vs aaa level.

    • @junerussell6972
      @junerussell6972 23 дні тому +1

      @@SimmerErin Unfortunately, it feels like many Sims players want the newer games to be "TS4 but perfect" which isn't going to happen. As I said, I think that was the downfall of LBY. I'm glad that the Paralives folks are not falling into that trap but trying to be the best at what they know they can do. I hope that people will realize why that nuance is so important!
      I don't know if I'll get Paralives (and I know I won't get InZoi) but I definitely wish them well. It's good to have multiple similar games out there to cater to the "subgenre" preferred by different groups. After all, there are several of the cozy games that I notice people play several of (like Ooblets, Dinkum, Coral Island, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Stardew Valley, Taonga, and the like.)

    Well we don't know the detail about how DLC would be free or any of that, they could have perfectly successful model some other patreon games uses where if you pay one time purchase of game on steam, yes then you get all new content free but you get with delayed period compared to patreon supporters. So essentially because many want the new cool stuff they still support development with patreon money. So until anyone know more specifics about their business models I think its too soon to assume anything or for that matter they have not already considered many of those things themselves.
    So essentially if they use something like that people who patreon get to try the fresh beta version while it get content and patch update plus hotfixes, then delayed free version would be more tested and little more stable version. Its not like people always abandon supporting developers once game been shipped like makers of Snakes above still got patreon support even when they launched finish game and started their new project they're working on now.

    This is probably a very unpopular opinion these days, but I’m actually in FAVOR of the paid dlc model. A lot of players seem to think that game devs are “generous” and “care more about their players” if they release free dlcs or extra content. but for some reason a lot of ppl seem to forget that every company that’s making a game exists to make a PROFIT, not to be besties with the fans of their games and “treat them”. And companies that release free DLCs or extras, I GUARANTEE you that they are making up that lost potential revenue in some other ways. No company will willingly swallow the cost of something or cut themselves out of potential profit when they can pass that cost onto their customers and still profit. And companies that release free DLCs are MORE likely to nickel and dime their customers in other ways in my personal experience. So if I have to pay for dlc in order to not be nickel and dimed in other areas then so be it.
