@@trob1731 Two movies that remind me of my time in the Navy for different reasons. The Final Countdown came out when I was first in the Navy and on my first ship, USS Gray (FF 1054). The dialogue was a bit hokey but the story was interesting. The best part was when the Cats played with the Zeros. I can only imagine what the Japanese pilots were thinking as they saw the Cats in action. Fiction to be sure, but fun. The second movie was Top Gun, of course, it came out as I was on recruiting duty in the Dallas Metroplex (Richardson). Virtually every guy who came in wanted to be an F-14 Tomcat pilot! Of course, enlisted personnel had almost no chance of doing that unless qualified for those rare enlisted to officer programs. There was one guy who came in who mentioned the movie (and I thought 'here we go') but wanted to know if he could get into something that would let him work on the flight deck! I've got an F-14 that I bought in Venise in 2000, or 2001 sitting on my desk with submarine from different times, a space shuttle plus the International Space Station. And a T-shit with the squadron headskull wich is now VF-103 "Fear The Bones" I love Tomcats. It's an incredible plane in the D version. (What I love the most is the moto : Defender Of The Fleet)
Totally agree. It had a truly unique ability to look so powerful and so refined at the same time. There are many beautiful planes out there, but the cat is head and shoulders above the rest.
What a fantastic and highly underrated movie, The Final Countdown. I watched it a few weeks ago with my daughters. Would you believe it?! They actually liked it. My thirteen year-old started asking questions about time travel and what would've happened if the Nimitz's flight crews actually engaged the Japanese after it was over.
That`s what makes it so special. It should be reproduced again for civilian use. I think some very wealthy would love to have one, new and improved. Liberty on wings.
Back in the late 80's I knew a Royal Air Force Tornado pilot who had been on an exchange tour with the USN flying F14's. I was totally in awe and enquired what his experience was like flying top gun. This guy had a fantastic sense of humour, he pulled a pair of Ray-bans from his pocket, put them on his face and in an American accent said, "Hell, it was just a regular day".
Such a great fighter. Should have kept them in production and upgraded avionics/engines and airframe (continuously). They are an iconic and star attraction in any aviation museum. I wish I had the opportunity to see one fly. No doubt the Suoer Hornet is good but it carries nowhere near the wow factor of the Tomcats held.
They were a truly beautiful and advanced aircraft for their time but were way too expensive to operate and were outperformed by newer, cheaper and more versatile aircraft like the super hornet. I actually think as a fan of the f14 it was better to see it die a hero rather than outlive it's usefulness a bit like the A10 has done.
Unfortunately good looks and wow-factor are not a reason to keep a weapon systems in one's arsenal. This thing was a nightmare to maintain and complicated to fly.
@@markjackson7650 ... its* usefulness (it*s = it is). Otherwise completely agreed. As much of a nuisance the original was to maintain, it is a joy to build this as a model kit.
Fun Fact: The F-14 would rarely (if at all) fly fully loaded with all of its weapons because if it didn't fire any, it would surpass its max landing weight.
Tomcat crews have refuted this "fact" countless times. Tomcats could land with 6x AIM-54s, but would need to be at fuel state 4.0 or less. A Tomcat loaded with Fleet Defense BRAVO (6x AIM-54s, 2x AIM-9s) more than likely wouldn't be returning the boat with all of them, anyway... The objective of this loadout was to eliminate a Soviet bomber formation enroute to destroy a carrier group. Any time a Tomcat needed to be loaded in this configuration on a carrier was a necessity to defender Mother.
@@TreeBarkSide No, you said they couldn't land with 6x AIM54s on board as it would surpass it's max landing weight. Again, incorrect - as stated. The F-14 is an interesting case study in perceived needs diverging from military utility. As we all know, the F-14, once the unreliable and underperforming A and B models were updated to the D standard, it was an interceptor par excellence - except for a equally specialized airframes like MiG-25, it was very nearly the best. But that made for problems. It was a lacking air-superior fighter compared to even much older naval fighters like F-4, and totally outclassed by any land-based fighter of similar vintage. It was massive, a maintenance hog, and had very low ‘up’ rates compared to even Soviet tactical aircraft - problematic but tolerable ashore, but major deficiencies at sea. What’s more, the heavy F-14 presence aboard USN carriers in the late Cold War meant only a very minor strike wing could be deployed aboard - largely obviating the utility of those carriers in the first place. The F-14 was a brilliant interceptor, but an utter failure as a naval fighter. Politics in the Capital and in the Pentagon forced it on the Navy, but it’s short service life even with comprehensive and extremely costly upgrades packages make it clear just how ill-suited it was.
