Woodwind pieces dominate Poulenc's chamber music oeuvre, but the Cello Sonata, like the somewhat earlier Violin Sonata, is a substantial work finding the composer at the height of his powers, and his tongue planted less firmly in his cheek.
Despite a rather rude initial outburst from the piano, the sonata-form first movement, Allegro (tempo di marcia), leavens its fragmentary fanfare-like motifs with lyrical, good-humored material for the cello. One important theme is especially broad, romantic, and bittersweet, although much of the development section is given over to playful treatments of the melodies, with staccato piano accompaniment to cello pizzicato.
The slow second movement, Cavatine, is one of Poulenc's most tenderly songful creations. After a long introduction, the cello takes up a mournful, nostalgic theme, and with the piano subjects it to several elaborations, some intense, some hesitant, ending with a lullaby for lost souls.
Unusually for Poulenc, an extra movement separates the slow section from the finale. This Ballabile -- a word suggesting a dance-like nature -- is a playful intermezzo offering a nod to the music hall in its outer sections. A trace of wistfulness colors the still cheerful middle portion.
The Finale begins with a stern cello recitative over sour piano chords, pausing for an eerie passage of harmonics. The movement's main matter scampers quickly through several episodes of short-breathed cello phrases and rippling piano passagework, with time out midway and again just before the end for more tender if occasionally dizzy music. What a great contribution to the sizable repertoire of violoncello!
C’est à Brive la Gaillarde, en pleine Guerre Mondiale, que Francis Poulenc esquisse cette sonate pour violoncelle ainsi que «L’Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant» et «Les Animaux modèles». Dans cette ambiance qui porte à la tragédie il trouve dans la musique un puisant antidote, un tant soit peu railleur, dans le premier mouvement (tempo di marcia), tandis que dans la cavatine, d’avantage recueillie, il semble prier et rendre grâce. Seul la joie éclate dans le ballabile et se confirme dans un insoucieux finale. Il dédiera cette pièce à Pierre Fournier avec qui travaillera une fois la guerre finie, pour affiner la composition du violoncelle. C’est la raison pour la quelle je préfère cette interprétation à n’importe quelle autre car, d’une certaine façon, Pierre et Francis la créèrent ensemble pour notre plus grande jouissance.

En aquel ambiente que portaba a la tragedia, el maestro encuentra en la música un antídoto potente y un tanto burlesco, reflejado en el primer movimiento (tempo di marcia), mientras que en la cavatina, un tanto meditativa, parece más un rezo de acción de gracias. Solo la alegría travesea en el ballabile y se confirma en el gallardo final. Poulenc dedicará esta pieza a Pierre Fournier con quien, una vez terminada la guerra, trabajaría con el fin de afinar la composición para violoncelo. Esa es la razón por la que prefiero esta interpretación a cualquier otra pues, en cierto modo, Pierre et Francis la crearon juntos para nuestro mayor contento.
As usual, Poulenc's "ideas-per-20-measures index" is astronomical. He teases with his prolific changes, then pleases with peaceful passages. What a gift from the gods was this quintessentially quirky genius.

I love Poulenc's mix of moods: Beautiful lyricism, quirky, sombre, et al. This is a stunning performance recorded with skill.
Poulenc's music has never been avant-garde music, but it is always charming, refined,and moving. I particularly like his chamber music. Thank you for posting this sonata!

Quand le monde fléchit autour de soi, quand les structures d’une civilisation vacillent, il est bon de revenir à ce qui dans l’histoire, ne fléchit pas, mais au contraire redresse le courage, rassemble les séparés, pacifie sans meurtrir. Il est bon de rappeler que le génie de la création est lui aussi à l’œuvre dans une histoire de plus en plus vouée à la destruction
This sonata is quite typical. The first movement is moderated in its tempo, uses in a very specific way the atifacts of the language of his author. The central movement is more interior and concentrated. A "ballabile" leads to the finale. This finale is in the traditional humoristic and ironic style of Poulenc. Unfortunately, we have here only the two first movements.
En reponse a Louis Jandais, "Sympatique musique de salon, de bonne qualite, mais sans plus". Pour moi cette sonate est divinne, sacree, specialement la Cavatine.

Tellement français, probablement trop ....Sympathique musique de salon, de bonne qualité, mais sans plus. Bravo aux musiciens qui en tirent le mieux expressif possible et ne sont pas responsables d'une partition sympa mais très moyenne.
