Now the bix3 has improved its perfomence after some serious surgery.. So thanks the surgeon Andrew Newton.. 🙌
Haha, it is a bit like surgery
love your flying videos especially those with sounds of nature and bird calls.
Yes I love hearing the birds too, often hear them more on the video
The fact that someone with your experience and skills mods planes to be stronger in a crash makes me feel a lot better I seem to be a slow learner or maybe just unco. lol
Haha, my planes don't look shiny new for long. If you're not crashing you're not trying hard enough
G'day Andrew, after seeing your mods spurred me into action to get rid of my noisy motor.
Wasn't always noisy, I had an upturn on landing with the prop still spinning, quite some time ago which I think bent the shaft.
Straightened it as well as possible, and flew with it for quite a while.
After seeing you pull out the motor mount, did the same and reglued in with a 2836 1100kv. Nice and quiet, and adequate,
but with 300kv less, didn't quite have the punch of the old 2630 1400kv original.
Had bought the small parts CNN mount previously but was too busy with other projects to put it in. It now is.
Glued it in last night after nearly demolishing the pod getting the mount out a second time (hot glued).
Went to bed concerned about the motor being now so far to the rear ( by comparison to original).
So this morning did some major surgery. Cut 30mm of the back of the pod, and remounted the small parts CBC motor mount.
Motor is almost back to the original position.
Have new 2836 aerodrive motor to add, but going to try original noisy motor with a 3 blade 8 x6,
probably Monday as it's blowing a gale up here in western Sydney.
I had my flaps on a y lead, changed to 2 separate channels, and have programmed in flaperons ( full span ailerons),
activated by flap slider. 0 - .5 flaps flaperons activated, 0.5 to full flaps deactivated.
Use a 5s balance plug and socket, to attach wing electrics,
Regards Keith.
Fancy mods Keith, I like the idea of moving the motor forward in the pod
Ive looked everywhere trying to find out how to remove my motor from an xka1200 and couldnt find it any where then i seen how u removed your bix motor by twisting really helped me havent tyred yet but feeling much more confident and will do same mod broke my motor mount an. Need to change it thanks again great vid
It was just glued into the foam, not too difficult to pull it out.
Thanks for the lesson! I flew for the first time my BIX3 this Saturday, it was a great adventure ... regards...
Wonderful, congratulations.
Hi dear Andrew. As a follower of your channel, I know you have a lot of work and you will have questions from a number of apprentices like me, but I enjoyed putting some honestly, because I want to evolve from my Parrot Disco and Bebop2 to the more "pure" RC Airplanes. Here's my first, my goal is to set up an RC Airplane to make FPV up to 10km away at the most. But I still have a lot to learn until I get there and get all the equipment I need, because I do not have any. To start this project I am considering acquiring this month an RC FrSky ACCST Taranis X9D PLUS 16CH 2.4GHz Transmitter with X8R Mode 2. Is the appropriate option in terms of features and price-quality ratio? Are there other options that I should consider in this investment dimension? I have never bought any RC before and confess myself confused, Futaba, Spektrum,... !!! Thanks for your response in advance. For this project I am considering as reference plane a Volantex Ranger EX 757-3 1980mm Wingspan Long Range FPV, but this question is for the next opportunity !!! Many thanks, João
Really well done, Andrew! I've gotten to fly a Bixler 3 and it really is a nice plane! I have to agree with you about the stock motor though....it's a noisy and whiney thing. I had similar sounds coming from my HK Skyfun when I first flew it. I knew right away that the stock motor just had to go. Your Bixler 3 sounds much better and it looks to fly just as well as a Bixler 3 should. Nicely done!!!
So much improved now, I can throw it around as I please
I could have used some tape like that on the leading edges of my C1 Chaser that plowed into a fence on launch the other day. It now has a two-inch gash into each wing. On the other hand, it made no difference and I didn't even notice until a few flights later when I was putting it away :)
Ouch, hope you got it on video
Andrew,
The rear wheel unscrews and the decals are water slide all you need to do is wet them and wipe the off.
Sigh....I should have tried that first, Thanks Little Ricky
I'm on my third Bix3 I did the same thing on My first one... lol
Very nice, Andrew. I love the channel!!
Thanks Cameron
will this bixler slope soar. What is the wing loading ?
Some really useful info. Many thanks. Subbed!
Getting ready to finish the assembly of my Bix 3 - any particular reason you didn't glue your upgraded motor mount in place?
I did 4:13 you can see the hot glue coating the tube before it is inserted.
@@AndrewNewton Aha! That's what I get for not expanding my YT window 😋
Neat! Thanks for the motor mount tip, Andrew - I have a basic Bix 3 on order and was wondering how I'd mount a Cobra 2217/20
Cheers
Tape on decales... Great idea! Thanks mate!
Or clear enamel spray works too
Excellent stuff Andy! :)
andrew can you show me if this is a good plane to take with me on my mountainbike and then go flying because the wings are foldable. To make a simple fpv platform
Have you watched the build video? You can work it out from that
Thank you for posting this. Do you have a link or information for the cnc adjustable mount? Thank you again.
Search for CNC Small Parts
The Bix 2 had whimpy stickers too. They would stick to my fingers.
Yeah just rubbing off with normal handling
Yes, the first thing I did on my Bixler 2 was to turn myself a motor mount...from wood....rather like yours so the motor is external and stays cool with more prop clearance. With a 4000 mah 3S it will fly for 30 mins or so...Been out to 4kms with it so far...had a fair bit of flying now....Snap Flaps...great idea Andrew for aerobatics....Yes, sod off over there with your DJI Multi.....lol.
Oh, and I like using that glass stranded tape too...but what I also find very useful is PVC electrical tape...its soft and goes round compound curves...and you can get it in white and other colours too.....:)
Yes that Phantom guy was crowding my patch
My wing mount pins became loose over time. I cut a pad of non slip matting and glued to the fuse. Super tight again and zero movement.
Good tip Mark
Thanks for the video. What motor and mount did you use to replace the stock motor.
Motor mount is by Small Parts CNC. Motor was a Turnigy 2826 1400 I think. But a Sunnysky 2212 1400 would be great.
The Bix2 PNP does all that without mods and costs less. I have the two but crazy...I still want the 3 too.
I agree, Bixler 2 is the best of the three. The Bix3 may be better at weight lifting but it also has a little tip stall tendency
really great, i like your job !
nice video Andrew!!!!!
Hi Andrew. Just wondering what prop size and batteries you use with that combination. I have the smallparts mount on its way. Cheers, Tim.
Just found your reply from four months back. 2826/1400 x 8.4prop, 3s/4s batteries and 30a Esc? Cheers Tim.
Oh thanks, I would have had to search for it myself . Yes still using that combo
Hi, great help on the upgrade motor. Can you say where you got the motor mount insert & adjustable motor frame from. Thanks.
Ah! sorry, just found it on ebay at around $15 US. the only downside is they charge the same in P&P to the UK
Smalpartscnc www.smallpartscnc.com
hello, what flight stabilizer do you recommend? Thank you
NX3, Kopilot, INAV on a Matek wing board are what I have used.
@@AndrewNewton hello thanks good day
what motor did you replace on the bixler , and where did you order the new motor mount ?
Unbranded motor from another plane, motor mount comes from smallpartscnc.com
Hi Andrew Great vid again mate..Quick question,iv got a Bixler 2 but i want upgrade the motor and esc,i'v already got a FURY fpv wing..So i was thinking of taking the rockstar 2000kv motor and 40a esc out and installing into the Bixler..!! can you see any problems withe me doing this? thanks again 😎👍
No problems at all, should be good
hello excuse me What motor do you recommend to use in bixler 3 and propeller for 3s battery greetings and thanks
Sunnysky 2216 1400kV with 7 or 8" prop if it will fit. 3 blade 7x4 works well
@@AndrewNewton regards thanks
@@AndrewNewton hello again between the 1400kv motor that you recommend and a 1250kv using 3s batteries which is the best option using the motor adapter greetings and thanks
Hi Andrew, Quick question for you, thinking of using one of the Carbon Bird motors for my Bix 3, would you recommend the "CarbonBird™ 3515 ss - 1111kv - 850w FPV fixed wing motor" or is this motor over kill for the plane? Thanking you in advance. Cheers Bruce
Not suitable for the Bix3. Too big, heavy and slow revving. CarbonBird don't really have a suitable motor for the single boom pushers.
Cheers for the info, I'll look at getting the same motor you have used.
Flies nearly like a cessna doesnt it? :D
Hello, the flysky fs i6x use open tx or be upgraded in anyway?
Dont know
its a good plane the bix,it was my first and it slopes in 30+ mph winds
I'm sure I'll have to try that soon, so windy here now
Hola mañana llega me decidí pnf Saludos
Need a link to the motor, prop and speed control you use, looks like a good choice, thanks
Hey Joe. I'm now using Turnigy 2826 1400kV motor with 8 x 4.5 prop and 30A Plush ESC. 3S or 4S 3000 Lipos work OK.
Thanks for the info. I am looking to fly FPV with the Eagletree Vector. I loaded the Vector, cam, video Tx, wiring and large 3S battery into the Bix 3 and the bird was so heavy it wouldn't even move to taxi with the stock motor and prop! So I am looking to do a motor and speed control upgrade. Is the Turnigy D2826-10 1400kv and 8x4.5 prop going to provide enough power to get airborne and cruise without stalling?
Great video as always. Could you explain what snap flaps are and why you use it ?
I though I explained it in the video?
Andrew Newton ah you did, missed that. Was watching the video while breakfast for the kids. Thanks again
Multi tasking Dad, clever. Good idea for a separate video on Snap Flaps
Great video! Would also love a link to that snazzy motor mount.
smallpartsCNC I think. I didn't buy it myself
Pete G google smallpartscnc might be where Andrew got his.
Andrew Newton haha beat me by 7 sec
@Andrew Newton
For a little more agility and speed, cut those wing tips off. They are wonderful for a beginner while banking, but you're obviously not a beginner.
Me neither. I've been flying both r/c planes and GA aircraft for about 45 years now, lol, about 5 years longer than I've had my pilot's license!
As a beginner in the r/c world, I started with the slowest, easiest plane available. As my skill increased, so did the speed and power of my airplanes. I never got to fly a Formula 1 racer, but the Quickie 500 was thrill enough for me back then. The instant I realized my plane was doomed, my heart would stop! These days I can't afford a momentary stopping of my heart so I don't fly them anymore. I'd end up burying the plane and someone would end up burying me that same days well!
So, a while back I noticed that even though I still have the skill and experience, my choice of airplanes is starting to go back towards the slower and easier ones. The J-3 Cub has always been my absolute favorite but lately I get a lot of enjoyment from the Easy Trainer by FMS. Oh no, no, no! I hope I'm not getting old! ...nah. ;)
The slower the better for me too Mike. We are just more mature, not old.
@@AndrewNewton
It's good to know I'm not alone. Your comment, "...more mature, not old." is wonderful! My mind refuses to grow old, I'm still in my 20's... until I see the old man in the mirror looking at me! My body however, well, let's just say it has a mind of it's own and the two don't always think alike. ;)
I enjoyed watching your video and I learned something too. We all know flat bottom airfoils do not like inverted flight, so I like the idea of "snap flaps". I have an old Q-Tee made by Airtronics that I modified by installing ailerons and a Cox .09 engine. I think I'll try it on that plane.
Thanks for the reply, Mr. Newton. I thoroughly enjoyed watching someone take a good airplane and make it better! Happy flying!
.
8:42. Is that a UFO? 🛸 or that other dudes drone ?
Didn't see it?
Hello, can that motor work on the ranger 1600, and the bixler 1.1?
OK for the Ranger 1600 on 4S, but Bix 1 needs higher kV for it's smaller prop
It even slopes without a slope
Just about
But why would you put a new motor in a budget plane anyway? Wouldn't buying a nicer plane be better?
Experimenting to optimise this plane rather than spending lots more money
Nice. Friendly too. Guys about here are no help or not friendly
Friendly welcome Marty
