      Supply and demand.
      Demand for a signed game worn Jersey from the last game ever played by some athlete today is probably higher than the demand for a taxation document signed by a foreign royalty.

      Maybe the guy signed tens of thousands of documents. I'm no historian but I'm sure the king had to approve a bunch of policies and stuff by signing them. I wouldn't be surprised if he had to sign like 50 documents per day.

      Just because something is old doesn't make it worth money. I'm pretty sure that document had hundreds of copies since it was a pay grade type of document. Items that are rare, and in great condition go for more. Lets say King Georges personal coat would be far more valuable because it its one of a kind and his personal item.

    I used to love this show, when it first was on....cause it was random things, like old toys, 1860 guns, vintage random items. But, when things like this show up or JFK’s cigar box, Hendrix guitar, Ben Franklin’s glasses, etc. I knew then it was staged, cause who is going into a Las Vegas pawn shop to pawn those kind of items, when you know an auction will get you so much more.

    • @ragingbull94mtx
      @ragingbull94mtx 3 роки тому +5

      Simple answer is auctions take time and cost money (fees). The appeal of a pawnbroker is liquidity - cash now. Think about it... how many items go to auction, never hit their reserve price and don't sell? How many items go to auction and sell for less than the seller wanted without a reserve? An auction not only adds time risk, it adds price risk too. The reward for taking on that extra risk is the potential to make more than expected. You eliminate time/price risk when selling to a pawnbroker because - cash now. Staged or not, it's still an interesting learning experience and fun to watch.

      Yes & no, we have more history so documents are more common. My gripe is that Americans understandably don't know their terms .... eg. the Act of Union was in Queen Anne's reign therefore we should be talking about George III being the King of Great Britain & Ireland (not England!). It's the ROYAL NAVY not English Navy and BRITISH ARMY not English Army. Ric H should know better.

    I think the authenticity of this is highly questionable. In 18th century England a "long s" was used as an "s" at the beginning of words and within the word but never at the end of a word. I have a 1755 London Gazette newspaper. Here are some excerpts: "His Majefty's Service"; "affift the Captains"; "impreffing Seafaring Men"; "perfons", etc. The original Declaration of Independence" follows this style, but I don't see that style here. I also have an 1803 newspaper "The Spectator" printed in New York City that has the "long s" style throughout. Also, as another stated, if this is so valuable why isn't it in a protective mylar holder?

I can only assume they are contacted or given some incentive to come into a pawn shop and "come on telly" with your item. There are just too many forums with info. and too many auction houses or sites that attract hi end buyers to go to a pawn shop of all lowly places.

    Why is a Antique Dealer selling antiques at a pawn shop? The entire point of a antique dealer is to buy and sell the stuff yourself, not sell it to some middle man.

    English navy? British Navy. There's no such thing as English armed forces post 1707. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish (now Northern Irish) largely make up the British forces.
