I'm gonna do it before i die! I met him once in mich but he was listening himself and wasn't playin. Ive gotta go to NY anyway before I kick, and he,s one I haven't seen live yet.
I get the bass pumping the/root with a funky line. I'm wondering, when you start using more tension how do you feel about the bass moving with you? Presuming of course that the bass is complimenting where you take it. The bass could just hold, or return to the root groove and it'd for sure work, or the bass could open it up. How much, if any movement of the bass do you prefer, generally speaking?
I saw Mike Stern and Jaco Pastorius I believe it would have been in the mid-80s at Hec Ed Auditorium which is where the UW Huskies played basketball here in Seattle. The two of those guys were like 2 of a perfect pair. I think that's what's the saying is! The synergy between the two of them was just phenomenal. Unfortunately that was during the time that both Jaco and Mike were using drugs and it was very apparent at that show. But, in spite of whatever substance those guys had on board they played some of the craziest shit I've ever heard , in a good way and in spite of their using not because of. I want to clarify that . It's been a long time since that show so I don't remember the lineup but I do remember the Bob Berg was playing sax. If you've never seen Mike Stern live you absolutely owe it to yourself, in fact you need to put that on your bucket list players of that you must see! I play guitar myself and I find his style, his approach to any given piece and his tone are so inspirational to me! And his instructional video such as this one are fantastic. He's a great teacher and has some really clever ways to approach soloing, comping and chord technique and voicings. Thank you for posting this!
when i lived in nashville i saw some of the best guitarists ive ever seen in my life. alot of those guitar were "filthy" looking. big fucking deal lol. looks like a well worked workhorse to me! :D great vid
diasspeed Except that it's not. It's a guitar with two humbucking pickups, whereas a Telecaster is a guitar with two single coil pickups. (Of course Fender too makes Telecaster-shaped guitars that aren't real Teles.)
No, you shouldn't warm up with the same things he does anyway. You should see how he's basically playing with rhythms and getting more complex as he goes. You should apply that to YOUR skillset. Take care and good luck!
Hey my name is Mike Stern and this is my right hand warmup. Now go and practice for next 10 years ;)
If you haven't seen Mike Stern play live, then book a trip to NYC when he's in town and find 55 Bar.

Such a fluid sound to his lines...

I have this guitar. Mine does not have two headstock string guides though!
Mike: Sometimes it is harder to play slow than fast.

He's saying he likes to play Bb sus 4 scale in sequence of 4th intervals over C as the "OUT"and also C minor over C as the "IN" sound

Yeah kristof, Stern has his own Pacifica Model!
i wanted to buy a tele and throw a 59 in there anyway...he makes it sound godly
lol Mike doesnt play tele. Hes always playing his signature Yamaha Pacifia
hanif_govan its a telecaster...or a telecaster clone, made by Yamaha if you prefer

Mike is good player. It's also nice here to see and old granny from the gutter to reveal her tricks and methods in life and in general survival. 8-]
Bien
Bad ass.
It is a Yamaha, his signature model.
Bet he was a massive stoner. He just keeps dropping these super profound and deep statements.
He wasn't just a stoner. He did some hard shit back in the day.Everything.
I do the same thing
Nice to see a guy with an example of his signature instrument that he has obviously played the living stink out of!
attention mike stern guitar head & string & vintage tuners
I'm kidding. This is awesome
His guitar is filthy!!
Exactly, he looks baked as heck xD
A giant!

The more you know the less you know indeed
Learn to tendinitis!
Doesn't have a Boston accent at all haha.
Yeah a little bit too lol.
No one cares about your opinion Jacob Torres. Save it for someone who cares.
1983, 1993, 2003, 2013, 2023 and Mike Stern plays exactly the same stuff with exactly the same effects and dynamics. Zero progress.
