Presented By: Michael Burlingame on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023 at the 1869 Schoolhouse Museum, Eastham, MA
Summary: This talk examines how and why Lincoln's wife made his domestic life "a burning, scorching hell," as his law partner put it. This enlightening narrative explores an oft-overlooked aspect of the 16th president's life. An American Marriage reveals the tragic story of Abraham Lincoln's marriage
to Mary Todd.
Michael Burlingame, holder of the Chancellor Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished
Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois Springfield, is the author of Abraham Lincoln: A Life, The Inner World of Abraham Lincoln, and Lincoln and the Civil War, as well as the editor of many collections of Lincoln primary source materials. A graduate of Princeton University and Johns Hopkins University, he taught at Connecticut College in New London for many years before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois Springfield in 2009. The Atlantic rated Abraham Lincoln: A Life one of the five best books of the year 2009, and in the New York Review of Books, the dean of Civil War historians, James McPherson, said that Professor Burlingame "knows more about Lincoln than any living person." An abridged version of that two-volume biography will be released in October. In 2021, he published An American Marriage: The Untold Story of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd and The Black Man's President: Abraham Lincoln, African Americans, and the Pursuit of Racial Equality..

Thank you
I am so offended by the laughter at Mary Lincoln's physical abuse of her husband. Domestic violence is no laughing matter. It's not funny and you all should be ashamed of yourselves.
