  • A sad scene from the 1994 Star Trek movie Star Trek Generations which is beautifully acted by Patrick Stewart at 1:13 and 2:00. In the scene a Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is sitting alone in his quarters looking at photos of his brother Robert and his nephew Rene. A concerned Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) enters and Captain Jean Luc Picard begins talking about Robert and Rene and breaks down crying and Picard tells Troi that he received distressing news from Earth that Robert and Rene have died and were killed in a fire and Captain Picard thinks about all the things in life Rene will never grow up and experience and reflects on the previous generation of Picards and what they achieved and acknowledges that he is now the last Picard. But, Picard and Troi's heart-to-heart conversation is interrupted when they witness the Amargosa star exploding.

I love how their relationship is such that Picard allows himself to be vulnerable in front of her. That level of trust was earned over years of sacrifice, service and friendship along with unwavering trust in her confidentiality. Riker also often confides in Deanna, but with him, he only lets his guard down as much as he does because of their prior romantic/emotional relationship. Even then, he'd never cry in front of her (or anyone) at this stage of his life. I think it's a result of Picard's greater wisdom and experience with age that he recognizes even tough guys can cry.

TNG, DS9, and VOY were the Star Treks I grew up with, but TNG has always been my favorite, and Patrick Stewart to this day is my favorite actor. Picard in particular was always my TV role model as a man....he was such a strong portait of masculinity. Being a man doesn't mean being emotionless, we all have moments when we have to let go of stress...and sometimes that means crying, and it is okay to do that with your closest friends and family.

This is so sad, but a truly missed opportunity for Star Trek. Picard's brother Robert and his nephew Rene, were to Picard the "Heirs to the Picard name and family". When they died, it left Jean Luc with no heir to the family name. But as we have seen in several episodes of STTNG, Picard seems to have a sort of implied "romance" with Beverly Crusher. And in even another reality, Beverly becomes Captain Beverly Picard of the USS Nightingale, a very fast medical starship.
I would have LOVED to see Beverly and Jean Luc settle down and have a family. There are stories on the net, that a future Picard child marries a certain "future Riker". This should have been explored, as the writers tried too hard to keep the TOS "Kirk" type of Captain (ladies man, but was close to marriage to Carol Marcus) her and her son David (Kirk's son) invented the Genesis Device. So they should have broke tradition and allow Picard to have a route that led to his marriage to Dr. Crusher. And in the movie ST Generations, it is revealed that Jean Luc DOES have a family when he was briefly in the nexus.

There’s no reason for this scene/plot point to be in the movie. It’s only there so he can realize the kids in the nexus aren’t real.
Except, Guinan told Picard he could go anywhere if he left. Which means he could have easily left the nexus and returned to a time a month before any of these shenanigans happened, and saved his brother and family, those people on the observatory, anyone who died as a result of the first supernova, anyone who died during the Bird of Prey battle, PLUS the Viridians.
