"This isn't a bad take, it's just not what I want"
"This bassline doesn't suck, it just doesn't fit"
    Also, anxiety is a bitch

It’s great advice man. Random observation- but these single take videos you have on here are SO IMPRESSIVE. I can barely get out ten words at a time without messing up what I want to say. I guess I should apply the advice in this video to that.

Bro my first videos are the same. I’ve just been recording multiple videos a week for 2 years. After a certain point, you get better at communicating! Also, get comfortable with silence. Silence is not a bad thing. Quite the opposite. And it’s better than ums and ahs haha.

@@AndrewBarrMusic I appreciate the sentiment, but I've been recording long-form videos for almost a year now, and I can still barely get through two or three sentences without messing something up, and it's only through the magic of editing that I appear well spoken, so it's still impressive... Anyway, good video, advice, and reality check!

I really needed to hear this. Im always finding the little things standing out in my recordings.
Once I released my music, and family and friends started listening while I was around, the second hand embarrassment was a real thing.

You've identified some really important factors here, but I'd like to point out another one: a failure of what you hear in the recording to match what you heard in your head. When you hear someone else's song, that's your first exposure to it, so what it sounds like is how you think of it. But when you are creating something for which you have already have an audiation in mind, chances are it's not going to match perfectly. It can be difficult to switch your mindset to evaluating what you have instead of comparing it with what you intended, even if you eventually decide that what you have is just as good or better than your original idea.

I have chronic anxiety and it's held me back a lot. I'm still working on assuming better intentions of people, but hearing someone say back to me that the critics in my head are just in my head and that they're not real was really validating. It shook something up deep down and now I just have to figure out what to do with that, haha. Thank you, genuinely

In the past i have gotten to the point of "If you're assuming, why not assume positively?" when dealing with anxiety, and while I'm no psychiatrist, I think I understand.
By assuming the worst, your brain thinks it's _protecting_ you from the worst. If it assumes the worst,it won't hurt as much.

    • @AndrewBarrMusic
      @AndrewBarrMusic  3 місяці тому +2

Yes. Much like the amazing ability to see snakes in a pile of sticks, our brains are always on the lookout for danger and is really good at finding anything negative 😂

Another thing with me, is that I *had* people, in another life and another craft, make really honest criticisms, that I echoed -- with *bad intentions.* Fixing those problems wouldn't have improved their opinion of me. I can definitively prove with no effort that those people were trying to hurt me and nothing more. But I tried so hard to galvanize myself from it, focus on "proving them wrong", and it turned into perfectionism, and it destroyed me. There's a line I wish I'd heard at the time and I wish I remembered the source:
"If you wouldn't go to them for advice, don't take their criticism."

for me, i struggle with the vulnerability of sharing lyrics with people. the lyrics i write are extremely personal and often a little intense and im afraid people will judge it as being too dramatic and stuff. it certainly does help to approach sharing it from a different perspective though.

I’d like to add to your last point because I’ve recently dealt with pretty bad rejection after assuming good of someone else for the music.
You have to be willing to assume good, but have discernment of comments or feedback that comes back from the person/people. Just as you defined it, not everything is for everyone. If you’re going to assume good things out of people you expect to get feedback from, and get a negative response, proactively change your target demographic and accept notes that actually help you.
If that person/people’s opinion “actually” mattered (it maybe really doesn’t in hindsight) and it didn’t go well, yet others have enjoyed it, narrow down the traits of those who can appreciate the art more to share a better experience to those that are willing to experience it if sharing music is a primary goal of yours.
Also be willing to accept the purpose of your own music. If you want to make electronic binaural dubstep, then be willing to accept that it most likely won’t be a top 100 billboard…but you lose nothing in giving it your best shot if that’s what you are choosing to pursue.
In the end, if you are succeeding by your own definition and purpose of why you make music, no one can take that away from you, but they can very well talk around it.
    Nice video.

    Brilliant advice.!
I compose and sing. I used to think "How will other people react / judge " my music?
IT DOESNT METTER! I like it so its good for me. If you think its wrong / off key/ weak / amature - who cares? I Like it thats why i do it! and there´s ürobably others out there who think the same about me and my music.
Thank you very much for this video. even if its just to get the "singers" etc out ther to get the courage and post what they think is good. IT IT GOOD!

Thanks Andrew, great advise and we’ll said. It’s hard, I’m on my 3rd Spotify release and I have several here on UA-cam. A family member just found them lol, of course they were supportive but I still cringe. Appreciate the encouragement! I’m going to keep going! Now I find the pain of not creating is greater than the pain of cringe 😮 subscribed!
