For me personally, this movie was a great eye-opener in self-love and acceptance. I know most people might watch it for the gore, but for me, it was about the internal conflict that everyone experiences throughout their life journey as they get older.
Totally agreed. Idc about the body stuff, the story was what made the movie 10/10. As someone who got depressed multiple times through her life due to the realization of aging, this def helped me cope w aging better.
@derrviel Gore is a major part of the story, sorry to tell you. I don't know many who went to see it just for gore, that's more the saw franchise's fans imo. The gore was crucial though, because seeing Elizabeth go through all she does and how violently she treats her body is exactly what people who have addiction and hate for their bodies do. They keep doing the thing that's destroying them because they have, in their minds, gone too far to go back. The diet pills, plastic surgery and fad diets we put ourselves through to look good to the outside world is disgusting and torturous and in order to properly spread that message in an extreme story or piece of art, is to throw it right in your face in the most extreme way. That's why this movie is so good. If you think you can separate the gore from the story, you can't. It is the story. The nasty things we do to ourselves for vanity.
People who think the movie is stupid most likely are themselves. This movie is very artistic and delivers a clear message. If you are here for a boring story that you will forget about in a week, this is not the movie for you. Once you exit the theatre, it will get you thinking a lot. As a matter of fact, I was having a hard time fully process the first time I watched it. I went back to the theatre to watch it a second time exactly one week later. I enjoyed it just as much the second time but in a different way. This might actually my favorite movie of all time tbh.
@@AidenNyte1this was exactly my experience! I watched it twice at the cinema and I extremely enjoyed both viewings in different ways. Such an outstanding and unforgettable movie... this is my obsession, at the moment.

I didn't walk out. I just had my hands in front of my mouth in disbelief in the last 30 minutes haha. It was ah-mazing! Both actresses should be nominated for the Oscars, but I doubt it would happen, with a body horror movie, sadly.
A very unique idea.. They did an absolutely amazing job, the cinematography, the vfx effects, the writing was all impeccably done. I loved it. It was wild and crazy. A movie inspired by the common issue, being beautiful. That’s what makes it different than other movies for me.
I cried so much watching this movie. I feel very lost in my life right now and this was NOT a film I should have been watching - but I went in completely blind, so I can't blame myself too much.
This is so far one of the best things I’ve seen in the past couple of years, and I am definitely not a fan of that genre, so to say that I was impressed, is an understatement.
This film is the most bold and daring film of this decade by far. It's a must see for anyone who loves Cronenberg, Kubrick, Tarantino or anyone who just wants to see Demi Moore in the role of a lifetime... I smell an Oscar nomination for her for this film for sure... If she doesn't get one, something's wrong with Hollywood which would probably just give credence to the films concept about women over 50 and their "you know...... _______ stuff stopping" as Dennis Quaid says between gobs of shrimp cocktail.. In this case careers, but this is such a daring and bold film I think once word of mouth spreads this will become the breakout sleeper hit of the Fall/Winter 2024 season... I know it was for me!

No seriously, I’m asking….
I only watched a recap of the movie, and it made me feel so uncomfortable - both with the whole story and plot and with myself I normally think I'm fairly strong-stomached when it comes to body horror, gore, etc. as well as relatively okay with how I look But this movie sent uncomfortable shivers down my spine, and it took me a minute to figure out why If this were a real thing, a lot of people would try it, and that terrified me because this movie displayed the possibility to an impressively detailed and morbid degree Still, 5-stars tho on all accounts 👏
Movie of the year! It's a horror with a powerful message. A feminist social commentary on the vulgarity of capitalist beauty standards. The message: Beauty kills...
Would’ve been nice if Universal distributed, maybe the film would’ve gotten a greater marketing campaign and awareness, its a weird wacky extreme body horror film so it probably won’t have made too much money, but more ppl would be aware of it outside of those who follow festivals
I am getting older and I think I have lost some of my beauty in passing time. But thank God, I know that beauty doesn't last and I accept the aging process because in the end, I know it's all going to go away when I die.
The Substance is not a remake of The Rejuvenator (also titled as Rejuvenatrix). There are similar themes and images but it's definitely not based directly on that film.
I thought it was a combo of requiem for a dream, death becomes her, and anything by Cronenberg 😂 the trailer gives you absolutely zero clue about what really happens. Great marketing.
The ending was hilarious. It seemed ridiculous and kind of stupid because the rest of the movie was genuinely horrifying. The monster that she became just looked like a costume and cgi, not a real human being.
No I won't be thinking about it for a long time. It just showed how Hollywood viewed female actress as they age and what some drama will do to hold onto to youth because of this belief. Even repprres get same teqatment
Beginning/ middle of the film I loved it ❤ absolutely genius concept. But the last 40 minutes of the film it was way too much for me. It was so disturbing that kinda numb my brain to the strong message of the film. I think they just took it too far

It definitely crossed into creature feature by the end, which I didn’t see coming, but I think the end with Elisabeth rediscovering her star was poetic.
So….it’s not a bad movie. It’s extremely well shot, the plot is intelligent and the acting is solid. But, in my opinion, the end of the movie just takes a massive dump on itself.
