  • There are various causes of cystitis in cats. One has a direct link to behavior issues and feelings of security.

I have the same issue with my cat. He is over grooming and had a lot of red blood cells in his urinalysis. My vet did not agree to try antibiotics so I'm getting a second opinion. Thank you!

I have eight cats. All but one are 13yo, and they don't always get along. Keeping a watch on their litter habits are a must. By doing this an owner can have a heads up with health issues before the problem gets to bad. Thanks for posting and sharing. 🐈‍⬛

Yes, one of the main reasons I never recommend automated litter boxes is that they remove your ability to monitor each cat's "output".

My cat is having this issue. She is 13 year old and was on uti medication, nothing changed. Given xray and bloodwork all were normal. Urinalysis showed blood and bacteria but no white blood cells (infection) .. so they diagnosed her with cystitis.. was on pain medication for a week, symptoms never subsided. Shes back again today for more blood and urinalysis! Hopefully find out the kind of bacteria and start her on a new coarse of antibiotics. I recently got a new cat last year and I'm almost 100% certain she is the #1 stressor, I try to keep her away as much as possible but its hard.

I got a 2 year old that began squatting on piles of laundry or anything boxes shoes etc.. drops only come out. she would lick it.. keep squatting.. vet could not get any urine sample bladder empty. gave convenia antibiotic shot and 5 days in she's not any better.. also gave a pain med. she not getting any better.. I dont see how or why she would be stressed. im home all the time. lots of play and cuddles and clean litter boxes.. I can't take much more of the peeing on everything

I feel your pain. I haven't had a minutes sleep for the last two nights. My cat has FIV so it could be this, but the vet says it's stress. Despite lots of cuddles and feliway, he seems to be stressed suddenly.

This describes my male cat a lot, he has just been diagnosed with cystitis and got a script for an anti inflammatory and gabapentin, I’m hoping it helps him, he’s also been over grooming I think because he gets red flaky dry bald spots on his skin

If your cat's overgrooming is caused by a skin condition, the anti-inflammatory may help with the cystitis, but it would be better to treat the skin condition directly. If the cause is behavioral, it's unlikely that the gabapentin will do much good. Gaba is one of those drugs that vets prescribe when they don't really understand behavioral issues. I'm not knocking your vet, or any others out there - it's not really their field of expertise. We bring them cats with behavioral problems and ask for solutions. Of course, they go for medicinal solutions first. If the problem is caused by stress and/or boredom, lowering stress and adding enrichment are the best solutions. Good luck with your feline friend!

My boy has similar issues and the vet recommended I try a treat for joint health. Dasuquin or Cosoquin, it has a chemical that helps with bladder inflammation over time. At local pet store. My boy has only been on 2 wks now and I am hopeful it will help along with gabapentin

Did you vet recommend a change in her food?

    • @KittyHelpDesk
      @KittyHelpDesk  Рік тому +2

No, changing food usually isn't an effective way to manage idiopathic cystitis. It's usually managed by making stress-lowering changes in interactions with the cat and in the cat's environment.

    Great information! SUBSCRIBED✅️
This is what I expected to be told by the vet on our last visit!🙄
    So thank you so much!
My Monkey Boy love's a good patting because he's a PURRR MACHINE...But I have been neglecting him in the last few months!
My 2 Dog's and 10 other Cat's take up a lot of my time and ENERGY!
BUT I will definitely give him more cuddles and patts and god willing reduce his stress and discomfort!
Also he absolutely smashes the Cat biscuits and i rarely see him drinking water so I'll try MORE wet food with him and maybe some APPLE CIDER VINEGAR...
    Thank you brother...
    Gratitude from Fiji 💪🏿🏝🇫🇯

I have a 16 year old who has just been diagnosed with cystitis and early kidney disease. I have pain meds antibiotics and he seems to like the diet food i have. But he won’t eat if i add extra water even if it is gently heated. I am keeping him in my bedroom at night as i also have a hyper 6 month old kitten (just neutered) who was making his life difficult. I always monitor them when they are together. Even though my oldie is drinking water i’m worried he isn’t getting enough as he doesn’t seem to be putting much fluid out. My cats have always had a wet food diet. I also have a 13 year old. Should i start him on the special diet too as a preventative?

I'm not a veterinarian, so I recommend that you follow your vet's advice. However, if the food your vet recommends is dry, I'd get a second opinion elsewhere. I cannot understand why anyone would recommend dry food for a cat with CKD, even if it includes supplements.
If you'd like to be more proactive in the care of your CKD cat, I highly recommend visiting Tanya's CKD site. Just be careful - it can be a bit overwhelming because of the amount of information provided. Narrow your focus and try not to do everything all at once. This is a good place to start: felinecrf.org/just_diagnosed.htm .
I also recommend learning more about cat foods. I have a video I'm going to release this week on this very subject, recommending catinfo.org as a primary resource for feeding info. Dr. Pearson knows a lot more about feline nutrition than I do and she offers a lot of that info on her site for free.
You may also want to try Hydra Care, a product from Purina designed to get more moisture into cats with CKD.
Adding a water fountain for your cats can also help. Most cats prefer moving water.
For the other cats, they should do fine on any high-quality canned diet. See Dr. Pearson's site for more info.

@@KittyHelpDesk i have been feeding him a German company, Vernandi Animal i think it’s called. It is a wet food pouch. I’ve only ever fed my cats wet food pouches. Spot seems to like it but he’s only eating a pouch a day instead of the usual three per day. This food is more solid less jelly and i understand he won’t each much if he’s feeling poorly plus it is VERY warm here at the mo. I’ve managed to get the meds into him by mixing them into a treat. He’s sleeping a lot understandably. I will need to contact my vet at the end of this week for a review and this time i will remember to ask about 13 year old Tib transitioning onto the renal food. We all live in an incredibly small house but have a static water bowl in every room and one fountain in the kitchen that’s always available
Thank you for the links. You have been incredibly helpful 👏👏👏
