I'm Sarawakian and fluent in four different Malay dialects (Bahasa Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei), also fluent in English, Iban, Bisaya and Bruneian Dusun, and I speak a little bit of Hokkien. Everything comes naturally except for English, which I learned in an English school in Brunei, and watching English movies has helped as well. I just noticed that we went a bit too far with languages🤣
You only talk to Chinese malaysian and 1 Malay girl, Dont think that covers malaysian people, if you ask Chinese of coz they speak most of the Chinese dialect. Why no Indian, more malays and maybe some other race. your interview is too focus to 1 race.
I feel many Indians are tri lingual too, especially if they speak their mother tongue. Malays also are sometimes tri lingual depending on the part of Malaysia they are in. most Malaysians at least are very much bi lingual
Generally, Malaysians are at least bilingual - their mother tongue paired with English. Malay would know Malay and English, Chinese would know Chinese and English; while Indian would know Tamil and English. While I also believe that Malaysian Chinese and Indians know basic Malay as well, as it is a national language. Malay (Muslim) might also learn Arabic in their primary school. So, I would say it is a melting pot of languages here in Malaysia.
I think most of the Chinese and Indian definitely know more than basics Bahasa Melayu, as it is a compulsory subject in school, vernacular school and national school.
ya correct. but they are the same family of languages.... unlike in malaysia its different....3 different lanaguage family. austro nesian ( malay langauge), dravidian( south indian languages), sino- tibetian ( chinese and its dialects) and indo- european( english. hindi.punjabi)
Not on average. Only those live in border towns perhaps can speak more than 1 language. Majority two. You guys do know that Italian Spanish and portugese are somehow related? Just like Chinese Korean and Japanese?
This is Pulau Pinang, there are about 30-40% of Chinese living there. Malay is the major race, 50-55%. In other places in Malaysia, there will be less chinese influence, but there are still some.
A lot people got wrong about Dialects in Chinese language. Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese are Not Dialects but Languages as there is no similarities in sounding. Dialects are like Malay "loghat" for example, The Pahang malay Dialects are different than Penang, Johor and Selangor but you can hear similarities in the Malay sounding.
I think it is better to make part 2 but try to interview people in KL which in KL, there are Malay, Chinese, Indian and more races. Also, I think the video is quite unfair because most of people lives in Penang is Malaysian Chinese. But one thing that can be concluded is, it is true that in Malaysia, people dont really speak fully bahasa Malaysia anymore even though bahasa Malaysia is our national language. We mostly speak in English because English is common language that will benefits everyone. Most of the school use this language. But bahasa Malaysia is limited to some category so not everyone can actually speak in bahasa Malaysia. Bahasa rojak is like a savior for us, because this language is not fully in bahasa Malaysia. Bahasa rojak is mix of languages with Malay, no matter if it English+Malay or english+mandarin+malay, it is very convenient. It is little bit sad but we don't really mind that because by using English, it is more easy to communicate with local and tourist or in business.
Not all Malaysians speak 4 to 5 languages, I must correct. It only reflects on the Chinese community because of the diverse cultural background, the multi language environment they grow up in.
Please, I can speak 5 languages: English, Indonesian, Dutch, German and French (the last three not so fluent, though). And I grew up in Indonesia and mostly stayed in the Netherlands for studies
But I'd guess that you intentionally learn the last three (and you learn English in school). This videos implies that due to the environment, most Malaysians can naturally speak more than 2 languages. It's like Chinese Indonesians who grew up speaking Indonesian, one of the Chinese dialects from their parents, and the local dialect/language (Sundanese, Javanese, etc.).
@@hitthedeck4115 as for the Chinese Indonesians, called Chindos colloquially, most don’t speak a Chinese dialect due to heavy discrimination. So most speak Indonesian and some a second language (such as Javanese, Sundanese, etc. )
