After exploring San Pedro and Placencia in Belize, I headed to my next destination, San Ignacio. But first, I set out on a Mayan street food tour like no other, starting along Hummingbird Highway. Let’s go to Belize!
🇬🇩 Grenada Travel Series: • The Ultimate Grenada S...
MISS BERTHA’S: At this famous breakfast spot, I had some tender chicken tamales topped with a rich, gravy-like sauce. I loved the soft maza (corn dough) and the flavorful gravy. It was very inexpensive at only $3 Belizean!
SAN ANTONIO: In this indigenous Maya (Masewal) village, I watched locals make Chaya tamales, fritters made from a root vegetable called macal, and escabeche (shredded chicken and onions in a tortilla). I also tried atole (a corn porridge), helped make some coffee, and tried a Chaya omelet with potatoes before ending with a coconut biscuit!
CARM’S HOME BAKING & COOKING: At this small, local bakery, I had a delicious stuffed jack, stuffed with stewed chicken, refried beans, and mozzarella cheese. I followed that with a traditional fry jack with beans, chicken, lettuce, and cheese, which they also topped with heavy cream!

I see a lot of similarities to food you will find in Trinidad. The tamales are like pastelles, the plain one is like 'boy' that's boiled, the root vegetable is eddoes, the fry jacks similar to fried bakes and other similarities but I had never seen turkey eggs before. That coffee bean preparation is the purest and most natural way of processing them. My dad used to do the same thing but we had a hand mill to grind it. There is nothing more satisfying than planting and growing your own food where all you have to do is to pick/reap what you sow. From garden to table. All the food seem healthy enough because it's homemade and not processed. No fine dining here. Well done 🙏✌️😋🇹🇹🇨🇦

The banana leaves are tempered over heat so they are pliable and don't break when folding tamales plus it gives the smoke flavor

Good morning David, mon. I'm on my way out so I will continue watching the video afterwards. So far, the tamales look delicious. One criticism I have though, is that you have to cut down of the use of the word "right". Anyway, later I will comment further. In the meantime, have a great day and you and Nathan, enjoy Jamaica, and be safe out there.🙏✌️🇹🇹🇨🇦
