@annblake3993 Because (and assuming you have no other condition that is contributing to your excess fluid retention) your body can swell with fluid if you're dehydrated, this is due to a higher sodium concentration in your body. It's one way for your body to prevent complete loss of fluid. When you hydrate, that dilutes the sodium concentration. The kidneys absorb excess sodium, and where salt is water follows , it leads to excreting the excess fluid you were hanging on to. Now, there is probably more involved, but that is as far as I know. If I made any mistakes, feel free to correct me.
@shirleyhardy891 no way sherlock. But what's that got to do with the original comment? It's obviously painful but massaging it might take away the pain temporarily but it doesn't solve the problem does it? Because it will come back
During high school, I went on a trip to Disney World to perform with my school band. We were staying for 5 days, performing on the first day. The bus ride there took almost 23 hours due to an emergency on the bus. 23 hours of doing nothing but sitting down, save for the occasional bathroom stop. During our 5 day stay at Disney World, most of the trip was waking up early, heading to each if the parks at the time of opening, and spending the entire day at each of the parks, nothing but walking and standing in lines for hours. Now, I was not the most active person and took very poor care of my physical health when it came to exercise, and this trip destroyed my leg muscles lmao. It got so painful to walk that it felt like I was walking on broken feet, and I spent the last day in a wheelchair. When I got back home, I had informed my mom (who was a nurse at the time) about the pain in my legs. When she looked at them, my legs were swollen from my toes up to my knees. You couldn’t even tell where my leg ended and my foot began. I was bed ridden for three days because of the amount of swelling caused by the pitting edema. No wonder my legs were so sore that whole week.
Swelling is usually because of heart issues especially swelling like this.also the swelling will come back after pushing it out of the way they need Lasix it helps remove excess fluid

I'll tell you one of the best kept secrets for a long time that has finally been trickling out over the years about diseases, treatments, and keeping the populous ill. That's what happens when pharmaceutical entities become the greatest benefactors to med schools and supposed research facilities and are placed (unfortunately for the infirmed and the general populous) in the position of being able to behind the scenes, structure their curriculum to the point of miseducation all to the benefit of ....you know who, yes, since corporations ARE classified as people, so I didn't err when 'who' was used. Do some digging you'll be surprised 😮 at what you may still be able to uncover about our med school curriculum.
We had renal patients that sometimes their lower hands will swell up like a boxing gloves. When we needed an extra IV we would do the same thing to the hand to expose their veins to start the IV. It worked like a charm. And old RN taught that to me in the 1970’s. And I use to teach all my new nurses on the floor that trick
My mother was an IV therapy nurse who studied at a training hospital in the 50's. She always referred to her time there as nurse:s training. Nowadays they call it nursing school.
I have been experiencing edema in just my left foot, ankle and leg. I didn’t know to do this, but I started doing it anyway. Now, I know that I did the right thing. Thanks for your video.
Address the cause of the fluid . Just moving it from one area to another doesn’t alleviate the problem that caused it in the first place . Kidneys , heart & so many other things may be going on .
My feet got like this when I was pregnant. My husband use to rub the fluid out of my feet everyday. It hurts like hell to try and walk when they are like this.
Inflammation can cause swelling but they’re not the same thing. For example you can get excema and psoriasis without swelling and edema can happen without inflammation.

Conclusion mentioned in the report says there is intermetatarsal bursal fluid. Foot surgeon to whom i showed says there is no cure for this. Doctor said i will have to tie crepe band and compression stocking everyday and properly moisturize my foot. My foot aches when swollen. May I request you to suggest me medication or treatment that can be done please.
I am not a doctor, but reduce salt intake. Salt causes your body to hold more fluid. Eat less carbs and more like Keto diet, but be careful with higher protein. I am only turning 52 and while I sit at the desk all day I would get swollen feet. By having the right diet I reversed this. I am also Indian by the way. My problem came down to lower kidney function. I am working on this by losing weight as I am obese and increasing water intake. By not drinking enough water I can have lower kidney function. It could have been high blood pressure, but I am only borderline hypertension. Read online and educate yourself, don't just depend on doctors as they have been scripted by big pharma to just push pills. Diet is 80% cure. I am living proof as so many before me.

I wish more modern doctors were more open minded about indigenous healing practices. This is a technique that has existed for thousands of years in many indigenous communities, so it's fascinating to see it being presented here as some new found wisdom or technique. We have to find a way to bridge the gap between indigenous and modern healthcare practices.

I was an OTD and certified lymphedema therapist for many years. Trained at the Folidi Clinic in Germany. Light massage is best, once one understands the difference between edemas and vascular circulation. Deep mass pushing fluid to an alternative area is not best. It's not all fluid, it is also blood plasma proteins. I agree with every lymphedema therapist responding.
I did this for my mom at the end of her life. She had a lot of fluid retention because her lungs were no longer working, and her legs would balloon up because she always had or be upright. I was seventeen when I did that for her, I’ll never forget the relief it brought her. It’s why I went into nursing. But our healthcare system is so broken that the focus of nursing now is so backwards. I hope that we can fix it one day.

Sometimes i try to go softly when there is pain, knowing they'll feel much better. I think I've read your not supposed to do this on bed ridden pts though. Just in case you unlodge a blood clot. Idk if its true or not. But be most feel so much better even with the new wrinkles in the feet 😂

Extracellular edema will do this and we have known this for a very very long time. the other part is that it will return very quickly once the patient stands up after surgery. The biggest reason why we say rest and elevation when dealing with an injury to an extremity. .
Problem here is the superior lymphatic points need to be decogested for the drainage to be effective and permanent. This method of force causes the interstitial fluid to return back. First drain abdominal ducts and trunk, then inguinal, then popliteal then foot.😊

I was in the hospital for 2 months at Brigham and Womens in Boston MA. My right leg was swollen from my foot to my upper thigh. I couldn't bend or fully straighten out my leg and I was internally bleeding from somewhere in my body so bad that I need 3-4 blood infusions daily. I had about 14 doctors from one of the best hospitals in the world working on me and none of them could figure out what was causing the swelling and what was causing the internal bleeding. They literally tested me for everything you can think of. I had a muscle biopsy, a bone biopsy, a marker test where they mark your blood with radiation to see if they can find out where you are bleeding from but that showed nothing. Finally they came to me after no answers and one of the doctors was like "this just might be something we haven't seen in modern medicine. That scared the hell out of me because I thought I would have to spend the rest of my life like this. I was 25 at the time, they sent me home when I shouldn't have been sent home. I ended up internally bleeding in my apartment in and out of a daze sleeping all day. My mom and my aunt and my cousins came by my house when I wasn't answering my phone and found me literally near death. I was taken by ambulance to a local hospital this time and my blood levels were 2.3 when normally they supposed to be a 13-14 in normal people Ive never been so weak in my life. I spent another 2 weeks in this hospital getting blood infusions and plasma infusions and finally by some grace of God, my blood levels went back to normal and my leg swelling stopped and I finally got to go home. I've been fine ever since and I guess I'll never know what that was.
I had a severe reaction to a mosquito bite and my whole leg was swollen to bursting. The relief this gives is nice but temporary. The only solutiom is hardcore compression socks.
I’ve practiced bodywork since 1984. There are MANY different causes of pitting edema. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if that foot refilled. It’s too long to explain. Also … that deep, unbroken stroke could cause lots of pain, so, please be careful.
You’re not removing the swelling, nor addressing the cause, you’re just displacing the fluid, which is gravity dependent anyways, so as soon as that patient stands up, the fluid will return.
If you did pre lymphatic release on the total body before any surgery, it would not be as big of an issue!! Post lymph massage even keeps the swelling down to a Minimum. Not sure why drs don’t recommend it for all post surgical treatments
If I press into my feet when swollen, it will leave red marks…permanent red marks. I barely pressed into my skin the first time it happened, and I still have a red mark from it. Thought maybe it was a one time thing, so I tried it again…same thing. 🤷🏼♀️ it looked like you were pressing pretty hard then pushing it upwards toward the ankle. My foot would never be the same haha.
Fun fact, excess moisture in the body is stored in the feet. Hence why you usually have to pee when you wake up in the morning if you drank before bed. So for you gamers out there, get up and move around every hour or so, it keeps your ankles from swelling if you drink a lot. More so with water, I believe, as I've yet to finish my experiments with other liquids. Alcohol doesn't work the same way, I do know that lolz
*Dont try this at home without specific MD (not NP) orders bc you could inadvertently dislodge a post-operative blood clot massaging legs or feet. Patients should have anti-thrombic pumps properly placed on calves during surgery & postoperatively particularly as an Inpatient, & at minimum anti-thrombic stockings upon discharge to home.*

The kidneys absorb excess sodium, and where salt is water follows , it leads to excreting the excess fluid you were hanging on to. Now, there is probably more involved, but that is as far as I know. If I made any mistakes, feel free to correct me.
It's called pitted edema. Simply displacing it is temporary. It will return shortly.
Also she shifted it up to the ankle
That’s what I was thinking. You can’t just massage away edema. It will come back if the root of the problem isn’t fixed
It is very painful if you have true edema and not just temporary swelling
@shirleyhardy891 no way sherlock. But what's that got to do with the original comment? It's obviously painful but massaging it might take away the pain temporarily but it doesn't solve the problem does it? Because it will come back

For anyone dealing with this I am soooo sorry OMFG.
Thank ypu for ALL YOU DO❤
As a surgeon. Not needed. No one does this. Address the root cause of edema.
Ouch and glad you are better.
Wow..that's crazy. You might as well just go on & make a video. 😊
Disney rash happens to some over age 65 who fails to wear their compression socks.
I have severe Edema and although my swelling does…..flatten out…. It doesn’t go away that drastic..

Swelling is usually because of heart issues especially swelling like this.also the swelling will come back after pushing it out of the way they need Lasix it helps remove excess fluid
Not always because of the heart
I do know that thus why I said “usually” it’s the usual cause but not always. I work in a hospital I do know a little about this too
I can agree with you.. the only personal help you get is from an underpaid assistant not the ones who earn the big bucks .
The problem with medicine is they don't try to get the root problem they just treat the symptoms
That's not true. They aspire to get to the root problem. It's not always possible to figure out, and even when it is, often times treating the symptoms is more feasible, practicable, effective, etc.
Did you come to that conclusion about all of medicine because of this singular UA-cam short?

We had renal patients that sometimes their lower hands will swell up like a boxing gloves. When we needed an extra IV we would do the same thing to the hand to expose their veins to start the IV. It worked like a charm. And old RN taught that to me in the 1970’s. And I use to teach all my new nurses on the floor that trick
Old nurses are a mountain of information and skills, stuff that is being lost now nursing has gone into universities instead of training hospitals. 😢

Get checked out. Swelling on one side is sometimes a sign of a blood clot.
Address the cause of the fluid . Just moving it from one area to another doesn’t alleviate the problem that caused it in the first place . Kidneys , heart & so many other things may be going on .
I have Edema of the leg ! Due to blood pressure pills! I switched to wayer pills
My feet got like this when I was pregnant. My husband use to rub the fluid out of my feet everyday. It hurts like hell to try and walk when they are like this.
I have this problem now and I am going through menopause.
If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
You should probably see a doc
Swelling can also occur due to fracture or internal injury. I will recommend not massaging unless ur doctor recommends it.
Food that causes inflammation AKA swelling is the enemy
Inflammation can cause swelling but they’re not the same thing. For example you can get excema and psoriasis without swelling and edema can happen without inflammation.
Light Grey salt by Celtic is a great reversing agent. Just use on food. Ny kidneys are great so I did a 1 day challenge of 12 talls, 10 to 12 oz. of water and 2 teaspoons of Light Grey on tomatoes. Huge reversal of edeema day 2.

For lymph edema, i think faradism under pressure is beneficial then others treatment protocol.
Do I stop eating sugar and carbs to get rid of this??? I just notice it after work standing pretty much all day?

Hello doctor, I am from india. I did MRI of my right foot ankle and doppler as well, reports of MRI and doppler are normal.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone☹️ hope he gets better
Glad she did this for her patient before surgery. More should do it to reduce the swelling post op
Hospitals need to hire more Licensed Massage Therapists that specialize in lymphatic drainage massage! We can do a great job at this. I plan on doing hospital work in a few years, and noticed they’re hiring more and more LMTs. 😊
To bad most Drs don’t do this !
If doctors were acting as massage therapists who would be the doctors? A doctor is a completely different job. He does his job and he orders physical therapy occupational therapy massage therapy speech therapy etc for people who need those things. If he wanted to be one of those therapists he would be in a different School
I hope that we can fix it one day.
the problem being...most people with this condition cannot reach their feet!!!
I have that in my foot for over 2weeks after a c section and it hurts so bad to even touch it 😫 it’s definitely better thank God
Someone recommended compression socks for postop recovery. It’ll minimize or stop swelling all altogether, and lessen your chances for getting blood clots.
The heart can be overloaded
People, this is post surgery. This can occur after lower extremity surgery and usually resolves within a week or two.
As a massage therapist more of this should be covered under insurance.

I never had kidney problems, got bad compartment syndrome and a fasciotomy, almost lost my leg. The swellin was disgusting. 55lbs all below the waist. Wasnt supposed to keep my leg either or be doing as well as I am today. Wouldnt take it back every day I feel grateful and I never really felt that before
OMG i love doing this! My friends feet were like garbage cans all up to her knee when pregnant. They were the biggest I've ever seen and I'm a health care worker. She'd lay on the floor and id sit in a chair and rub her feet for hours. Until they were almost back to normal. If there is no pain I'll do this. Sometimes i try to go softly when there is pain, knowing they'll feel much better. I think I've read your not supposed to do this on bed ridden pts though. Just in case you unlodge a blood clot. Idk if its true or not. But be most feel so much better even with the new wrinkles in the feet 😂

Find a MLD therapist to assist you for a treatment block to retrain your pathways to uptake the lymph. A garment without work won't often eliminate the swelling. 🌹
I’m forever using this technique on my patients ❤❤❤
Extracellular edema will do this and we have known this for a very very long time. the other part is that it will return very quickly once the patient stands up after surgery. The biggest reason why we say rest and elevation when dealing with an injury to an extremity. .
Problem here is the superior lymphatic points need to be decogested for the drainage to be effective and permanent.
This method of force causes the interstitial fluid to return back.
First drain abdominal ducts and trunk, then inguinal, then popliteal then foot.😊

As a person with congestive heart failure who often has edema, I can tell you that massaging hurts! Trying to massage the fluids and swelling is hard to take. It feels like the skin is going to burst anyway. When you add pressure of that manipulation to move the fluids away, that makes it so much more painful for me. For free???!?!?!?!?!!!
I am a physiotherapist and this is one of the ways how we do lymphatic drainage. But should be done not too much pressure like that.
Just showing how edema can be mobilized and that it is a technique.
My mom said you gotta be careful with this because if you have a blood clot, you don’t want that to go to your lungs or your heart
As someone who’s had this type of swelling in my foot/ankle due to ORIF surgery this massage really helps with swelling that is persistent
I had a severe reaction to a mosquito bite and my whole leg was swollen to bursting. The relief this gives is nice but temporary. The only solutiom is hardcore compression socks.
As a nurse- thank you! I’m always looking for ways to help my pts!
Water is not being absorbed in the blood or veins, it’s going under the skin. Celtic salt under the tongue will help with proper absorption of liquids
When I had surgery for my broken leg this was the BEST feeling and I felt so much better after.
If you did pre lymphatic release on the total body before any surgery, it would not be as big of an issue!!
Post lymph massage even keeps the swelling down to a
Minimum. Not sure why drs don’t recommend it for all post surgical treatments
Sorry if this is a silly question but doesn’t the fluid hurt a lot a lot? Also how long does fluid stay in the muscle for?
