  • Well a lot has happened already, but I will have to make that another video. Today however we find out if this thing is going to run or not.

    Good video. I was just looking at the same exact sled a 1996 arctic cat 580 ext at a auction sale down the road. The odometer had 1800 miles on it and the owner said he swapped the engine out from another 580 ext and never fired it up because he didn’t want to run it on old gas. The rest of it is in pretty nice shape even the original seat cover is still there with no rips and still soft. Thinking of getting it as all the rest of my sleds are from the 70s and wouldn’t mind one sled that’s a little more modern haha.

      Totally worth it! Not the best hill climbers if you're into that sort of riding, but they get up and go for sure. Easy maintenance and good on fuel. They seem to be available quite frequently too. All around great sleds!

      @@JustinAnthis I live in the prairies so there isn’t too big of hill’s around lol. Will have to see how much it goes for on auction day. Must be a low hour machine because it was pretty clean and not beat up. But thinking it sat for a long time too. Had great compression and original keys in the ignition too. Hope the stator and ecu are still good.

      Most likely the spring is gummy and needs lubrication. I would recommend removing it performing a thorough cleaning, and lubricate the spring.

    I'm going this weekend to look at a pair of 96 ext 580s. how hard are the fuel tank/seats to find?

    • @JustinAnthis
      @JustinAnthis  3 роки тому

      If you have the foam, the seat covers are about a 100 bucks and pretty easy to install. Just remember that every single imperfection will show through in the leather when it's stretched. If you don't have the foam that's another story. If the tank is missing they go for a couple hundred on Ebay. The foam I had was about 3 inches short and it had to be cut it in half, then foam blocks glued in the middle and shaved down to fit correctly. Local upholstery shop gave us the foam for free.

      @@johnhines4081 if youre getting the sled anyways, i would find out where it is leaking. It could end up being a very simple fix. But yes, these are equiped with a combo tank/seat setup. Is it Carbed or fuel injected?

    Idk if this one comes with hand warmers but my ext does and they don't work. How do I fix or where do I get replacements?

    • @JustinAnthis
      @JustinAnthis  3 роки тому

      So usually these old ones are internal to the handlebar assembly. I would check the voltage from the switch to the handlebar warmers when the engine is running to make sure you are getting power. If you are getting power and they are not warming, it could be a broken or disconnected wire. Make sure your switch on the dash is working properly and doesn't have corroded connections preventing power from passing through.

    Just found your video and i cant find the error i am having. I was given a 1994 580 EXT EFI for free and i am getting 2 long and one short blink on the ECU. based on the user manual, it says its a failure in #1 injector control circuit in ECU or open/short circuit in #1 injector or its lead wire. magneto side. I cant for the life of me know what that means or how do diagnose. I believe the previous owner replaced the injector already, so a bad injector can be ruled out.

    • @JustinAnthis
      @JustinAnthis  3 роки тому

      I would start with bench testing the fuel injector with a 9 volt battery, even if you think it was replaced. There is a youtube video floating around of a guy using sequentially larger pieces of heat shrink to larger bits of hose to connect to a can of carb cleaners red straw to the fuel input of the injector. Then holding the can open while extremely briefly powering (tapping the wire to the battery) the injector with two alligator clips attached to the injector connections. This should both clean the injector and produce a spray of fuel out the nozzle. If not, then you have a bad injector.
      Check your fuel injector wiring harness connections for corrosion or bad and broken connections. These wires are color coded so they should be identifiable at the ECU end of the plug. Check for .000 -.008 on this impedance test. Check across the wires unplugged from the ECU and injector for infinite resistance to ensure there is not a short on the wires going to the injector. If these all work, then the sad part is that the ECU may have shorted or blown at the ECU injector circuit which would most likely require a replacement ECU of the same model number.
      Just in case you didn't already know, the Magneto side is the side of the engine OPPOSITE the drive clutch with the belt around it. Lastly, or probably first,
      make sure your battery is fully charged.. These engines DO NOT work with a weak or dead battery.

    Do these things have a electronic starter or is it just pull start?

    • @JustinAnthis
      @JustinAnthis  3 роки тому

      As far as the older ones go a lot of them have the option to add electric start. Most newer sleds will have electric start. This model came with the option to add electric start but this sled doesn't have it.

    Why did you put zip ties on the primary just wondering just curious ?

    • @JustinAnthis
      @JustinAnthis  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! So in the first video I described the sled a little bit. At some point I mention the primary clutch didn't come with a spring. This caused the clutch to rattle a great deal when we first got it to fire up. Not really considering the full outcome of a decision like that I thought I would temporarily hold it in place with some zip ties. Unfortunately, these clutches are designed to overcome quite a bit of spring strength and therefore as you witnessed here, it quite easily overcame the strength of some plastic zip ties. Basically I didn't think it through. But at least it makes some entertaining video! There is now a green/yellow 4000ft + spring installed and it no longer rattles around. Thanks for the question!
