    How to Vertical Jig for Crappie part 1
    July 20, 2017 Crappie Fishing
    Tonight I attempted to film a tutorial on How to Vertical Jig for Crappie...let's just say I've had better evenings. I did manage to boat a few crappies while demonstrating how I go about the vertical jigging process. Stay tuned for part 2 of How to Vertical Jig for Crappie.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

    Dude, I like how you stay calm under pressure. Seems like it started off as a frustrating day (getting crowded by other boaters doesn't help) but you pulled out a good day and taught me something while doing it. Thanks man, cool video.

    I like to spider rig. Four poles, double-rigged. When fishing certain depths in a still boat, slip bobbers work great. You know the depth and can easily adjust it, if needed.

    I was probably 8 or 9 yrs old, fishing with the old man, and this is how he always fished crappie. When your young you want to be like dad, so from that point on, this is how I fished crappie. 35 yrs later and I still use this method prob 80% of the time. I also love using bobber and fishing with pink/black combo or chart/purple Bobby G. Stroll'r jig, also Bobby G's SLAB SLAYERS monkey milk, electric chicken and blue ice. Those are colors you cant go wrong with. Tip with crappie nibbles, and fish a foot or so above stumps ,brush, vegetation....also great method when they are up tight on the bank

    I’ve been in situations when crappie are close to the bottom and the only way I could catch them was bumping the bottom slow trolling spider rig set up. Marabou spinner jigs works great for this in low visibility

    I’m in east Texas close to lake fork, lake of the pines , caddo lake and Toledo bend. Most lakes here you must throw them back if there under 10 in, and catching those 18 inchers are fun as well

    I start higher in the water column over a brush pile, 4 to 5 ft ,work your way down in depth that way you don't disturb the hungry fish that are on the top of the brush pile by bringing a fish from the bottom up through the brush pile.

    Great video. I like to troll slow like .05 with a rod in each hand in shallow water. Picked up 18 Saturday all 10+ inches using some great new hand tied jigs a buddy made for me fishing near Memphis. They were hitting in the purple early then whites later. Used green crappie bites.

      It is to bad that Lakeveiw,Northlake or Flowerlake can no longer be fished.Dacus never recovered from the flying carp problem.All the oxbows are flooded anyway.
      I use to spider rig with 5 poles now I prefer 2.A school of White bass or a large catfish can turn fishing into hard work.when trolling with multiple poles.
      Sometimes trolling is not effective.I believe I will try the structure fishing method at Glenn Springs today.I have not used my buoy markers in years.

    To measure depth, you can also use your reel. Length of line per crank x number of cranks.

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 років тому

      This is true. I just found it faster to measure rod length

  • @danhufferdoutdoors
    @danhufferdoutdoors 6 років тому +1

    Good stuff, suggestion...my reel draws 32 inches of line per revolution. If you use a combination of what you are doing then count revs' you won't have to take the bait out of the water so much.
    Thanks for the post.

    I see you fish a lot of with a 7'6 acc rods. Any Intel on longer rods vs shorter rods?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  5 років тому +1

      I normally use the 10' or 11' jig rods for vertically jigging brush piles. The 7'6" and 8' are great for casting search baits or slip bobbers. The longer rods are meant for more of a vertical approach. I was spider rigging for the first time ever on lake of the Ozarks and really enjoyed it, so I would filming with the 14' trolling rods by ACC this upcoming summer.

      In this lake those are the keepers. Biggest fish I have ever seen pulled out of this lake is 14". Keepers is relative to what the lake has to offer unfortunately. The steering system was about twenty years old and the pinion, which turned the cable system was completely rusted. I ended up replacing the entire steering system in July? I think. Now the I can steer the motor with one hand no problem.

      I am trying to do some shore fishing videos, the problem is this time of year crappie move into deeper water 20+ feet. If you're fishing from shore (in the mid-summer through the fall) try to find a spot near a bridge or a dam. these will be places where you may be able to cast to deeper water from shore. Right now (in September), I am finding crappie on breaklines that go from 15-20 feet deep in a short distance. The best time of year for shore fishing crappie (or anything) is in the spring, when they are in the shallows to spawn. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching! More videos to come!

    You mentioned Crappie move, how do you dertermine where they are moving to?

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  7 років тому

      Well the will usually follow baitfish (when feeding), and they like to stay in the same environment (water depth, structure, weedlines). So if you find crappie in 10ft of water near a weed line, and then all sudden you can't find them anymore, try moving to an area with the same type of set up (10ft of water near weed line). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    Good video but learn the difference between "structure" and "cover".

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 років тому

      Bob Estes you're right I should say cover when talking brush piles and weedbeds. Its just when I think of cover, I think of over hanging tree limbs and docks though (things above the water). Thanks for watching.

    • @kevinkev500
      @kevinkev500 5 років тому

      In the world of fishing Bob, they are interchangeable since both can be the other. Weeds and brush are considered soft structure. Hard structure such as rocks or boulders also offer cover to the smaller fish (bait) that the larger fish prey on.

    If I don’t have a trolling motor would I drop an anchor 🤔

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 років тому +1

      yes. just don't drop it directly on the school of fish, this may scare them. However, if you are on structure, they most likely will come back to that structure to feed or for cover. Thanks for watching!

    Why not use a bobber

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  5 років тому

      This video is about vertically jigging for crappie. You can use a bobber if you want, I have many videos demonstrating that technique.

      @@FloppingCrappie you have ant video's of not fishing on a boat? Like just the side of a lake? I caught like 1 crappie yesterday with a jig and bobber combo but today I only had one get loose. I can't seem to understand if I should be using weights with my setup or what. I use 2 detachable ones and a floater. Idk if you can link me to a video that is kinda along those lines.

      @@xXBrownBoy12Xx I haven't filmed many videos fishing from shore. This is something I plan on making more videos of in this year. Depending on what part of the country you're in the crappie should be shallow right now or within the next couple weeks for the spawn. Try using a small bobber and a 1/16 or 1/32 oz. Jig. Cast near fallen logs/trees or near standing reeds.

      @@FloppingCrappie I'm in GA USA and yeah I'm using a 1/16oz but should I add any weights? Also how far should my bobber be from the jig fishing from shore? Thanks btw

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  5 років тому +1

      @@xXBrownBoy12Xx the crappie should be spawning right now or some may be in post spawn. I would out the jig a foot below the bobber. No extra weights needed. The fish should be fairly shallow 3ft or less if they are spawning. The post spawn fish will still be reasonably shallow 3-6ft.

    I was told that the fish finder would like show a bunch of fish & they would be stacked ontop of each other close together!! I don’t no if that’s true or not but the help would be greatly accomplished!! Also I mounted the transducer on the back of my boat & not on the trolling motor!! With it on the back of the boat where should I fish when I see them on the fish finder?? Thanks for the information!! Greatly appreciate it!!

    • @FloppingCrappie
      @FloppingCrappie  6 років тому

      Crappie will look like an oval, fish stacked on top of each other, when they are schooled together. If the transducer is on the back of the boat, I would throw out at least two marker buoys marking on each side of the school. So as you start seeing the fish on the sonar throw a marker buoy out, then as you keep moving (with your big motor) throw another marker buoy out when you stop seeing fish on the sonar. These buoys will show you an area to start casting or jigging. This way you can fish off the front of your boat.
