Verrry cool technique, Samantha, and you present it so well. As "alien" looking as it is, it also reminds me of a rough Irish tweed from a distance. Because of the small pattern, it would make amazing backgrounds. I'm imagining it in a mix of metallic colors...ooh! Thanks, as always. You're such a delightful teacher!!

I was going to say the same things about the birds! I picture this beautiful little studio with those glass-shutter windows open to a beautiful 75 degree day with semi-tropical birds and plants outside. Besides these tutorials being technically THE BEST, Samantha's voice and the background birds are so incredibly relaxing.

Hi Samantha! Thanks for this wonderful tutorial ! I have a question, I am baking for an hour (per suggestion by Cindy Lietz from PCT on UA-cam) and I'm not having problems with burning or anything, but I find that my pieces become very brittle when they've been out of the oven for 24 hours. When I first take them out they are very flexible (I wait until they are mostly cooled down to take them out). I am using Premo clay exclusively, which I chose because of the strength and flexibility it's *supposed* to have after baking. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Have you ever heard of this, and if so can you please let me know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks for the help and the video! Have a wonderful day! 😊
I've never heard of this problem before. Hmm. Are you leaching your clay at any point before or during baking? I've found that baking the beads in cornstarch can leach the clay sometimes. This could be the problem. Are you baking at a high enough temperature. It's great to bake for an hour, but if the temperature isn't high enough it still won't bake properly. If you've mixed cornstarch or water into the clay that could also make it brittle. Other than that I have no idea why it would be brittle.
Jessama Tutorials Hi Samantha, thanks so much for the quick reply! Um, I don't think I'm leaching the clay, but I will try to bake something as soon as I make it (instead of waiting for several pieces to fill the oven) and I will let you know. I am working on wax paper right now as an alternative to a ceramic tile (haven't gotten around to ordering one yet). However, no I didn't use any water or cornstarch. I did have to add some mineral oil as I received a lot of clay that was somewhat hard/old (I need it to keep the clay from crumbling). I used Premo exclusively and baked at 260 degrees F, which is a little under the recommended temp (275), and I baked for an hour for some pretty thin pieces that I intended to add a clay border/backing/bail to later and rebake. This was my first time baking and I was determined not to burn anything so I baked on a cookie sheet covered with paper and tented it with an aluminum pan (which I won't do again after reading your article on baking on your website 😉). Well as I said, I will try a fresh bake and see what happens (*hopefully* the problem will go away and I will not have to destroy too many more pieces 😣)! By the way, this is a great tutorial! Okay so I have an idea of why it might be brittle. If your clay is hard from the start this means that it's not as strong as it could be and adding oil could be making it worse. I'd add liquid clay as this will help the clay be stronger once baked and will soften it at the same time. Also be for you go making nice pieces you should figure out the baking system first as it can take a while and you'll probably end up messing up a few pieces in the process. I'd use plain white clay for the moment while your testing your oven. This would mean that you wouldn't have to worry about messing up your beads. I'd bake at the recommended temperature and see what happens. If he white comes out with a yellow tint even after you protect it then the temperature is too high, but you won't know till you try,.

What would it look like if you staggered your round pieces of clay then flattened them and did the cuts?
I'm not sure as I haven't tried it yet. I'd give it a go and see what happens.

Maybe you could bake a chip of it so we could see if the layers looked really 3d. Translucent layers are fascinating.
