Hard to believe Hughes wrote the screenplay in three days. He really was a genius. And Candy died way too young. Apparently he was the nicest guy in the world.
John Hughes was one of the most talented and prolific screenwriters of his era, if not ever. The man could write near-perfect scripts over a weekend.
"You're going the wrong way!"
"Oh, he's drunk. How would he know where we're going?".... brilliant writing!
Another Steve Martin movie classic: The Jerk
She's literally my favorite kind of person to enjoy movies with! Also a guy that can unapologetically get emotional at an ending like that is a true man. You guys are the real deal. Keep reviewing classic movies! I'd recommend Uncle Buck!
Weird that you have to put that out there, I mean what is a real man? like are you an expert on this? Just a very strange statement to make. It's almost as if you are trying to say, well never mind, it's just really, really weird... Wow!
YES UNCLE BUCK IS ANOTHER JOHN CANDY COMEDIC BEAUTY, AND DUTCH WITH ED ONEIL.
"You cryin'?"
"Everytime..."
Me too man
Yet another reason why this man is a keeper.
Nice to see I'm not the only one crying. And you're absolutely right about the hotel room scene where John Candy makes the scene so much more believable with that stumble over the line.
"You crying?"
"Every time"
Me too, bruh...
pro tip: you can watch movies at kaldrostream. Been using them for watching loads of movies these days.
@Kai Simon yup, I have been watching on KaldroStream for since december myself :)
@Kai Simon yup, been watching on kaldroStream for years myself =)
Join the crowd.
If you want classic Steve Martin, you should see “The Jerk”.
The airport scene where he drops all the bombs is probably one of the funniest scenes ever.
Classic scene “Those aren't pillows!”. It’s one of my all time fav movies. Great chemistry between Steve Martin and John Candy. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is probably, for me, Steve Martin second best movie. Doesn’t contain the same emotional feels but fun chemistry between Steve and Michael Caine.
As Matthew said in the Total Recall video: "'Vicariously watching these movies through you, is the closest I'll ever get to watching them for the first time again.'", I'm sure there's got to be thousands of movies that you've not seen, it's not possible to have seen them all.
I like the idea of a second series like "Not watched in a while" or something like that, but not right now while you're building up you're subscriber base (You've got twice the number I have in the space of 3 weeks that has taken me over 10 years, goddamn!), stick to the first time watches, because those are the most fun to experience with people.
I'm kinda bummed you've seen Blazing Saddles, that would definitely be my top request at any point you start the second series.
Happy thanksgiving to you both, hope you're both safe and healthy. Love from Scotland :D
That's exactly why I watch these reaction vids. Seeing someone else react seeing it for the first time is the closest I can get to reliving the first time I saw it. :D
R.I.P To John Hughes & John Candy, Still Miss You, Guy's
A lot of people are suggesting "The Jerk".... but an underrated classic of Steve Martin's is the film "Roxanne", also from 1987. Trust me!
These cans are defective.
At the very end of the movie:
*I'm not crying. You're crying*
Every. Time.
"Uncle Buck", please!!! My favorite John Candy movie, along with this one. She will love it!!!
Hell, yeah!
I think uncle buck is no where near as good as this
Uncle buck is before home alone for culkin. I like uncle buck whether it's not as classic as plans, trains, and automobiles.
I always wondered why the wife reacted like that when he came home. I thought it was a little over the top until I learned about a sub plot that they had to edit out. She thought Steve Martin was having an affair with a woman named Del and was avoiding coming home. So when he walks in she is obviously super relieved to see who Del is.
I always thought Neal gave her a call from the train station to let her know he was bring Del home, and he had explained Del's situation to her. She took Del in with no questions. Neal is a lucky man to be married to a woman like Susan.
I always thought she was overreacting, your explanation makes much more sense
I never knew that thank you I learned something new everyday
@@otisroseboro5613 yes the original cut of the movie just like his other movie the breakfast club was 3 hours long
"O Brother Where Art Thou?" would be a good one.
You're dumber than a bag of hammers
@@JustSUMMReactions One of my nephew's first words was "gopher", because every time he'd toddle by, I'd poke him and say, "Gopher, Everett?"
My Hair
"Them sirens did this to Pete, they loved him up and turned him into a horny toad"
"OH George not the livestock"
Big Trouble in Little China
Emily's laugh is more funny than any slapstick comedy!
Rip To A Great Actor John Candy, We Still Miss You Always
Where's your other hand? between two pillows, those aren't pillows. This is still one of my favourite holiday movies :)
Del: Marie's been dead for 8 years
Talk about a gut punch we weren't ready for.
John Candy embodies some of the finest and funniest characters in movies - he's a gem!
The airline announcement guy was Ben Stein. Before he had parts in a number of movies and TV shows, he worked as a speechwriter to Richard Nixon, of all things. I actually first heard of him when he hosted the late 90s/early 2000s game show "Win Ben Stein's Money" for Comedy Central.
In today's episode, giant teddy does his best John Candy impression by being big and cuddly. Good job, giant teddy!
There’s an existentialism to the phrase “fucking keys to a fucking car that isn’t fucking there” that makes me laugh so hard, like it’s Schrödinger's Car.
One of the most classic moments....where's your other hand? between two pillows. Those aren't pillows! AAAAHHH!
It's better to see films you have not seen, the reaction is more fresh and genuine. Seeing John Candy's big face at the end is just a nice way to remember him by. It's representated so much who he was.
For Steve Martin, gotta watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels -- hillarious. Co-stars Michael Caine
Yup, great movie and my favourite Michael Caine movie
"What Deity did you piss off?"...answer..." Murphy." Y'all are hilarious.
John Candy was an actor beyond reproach. God is he missed.
Another good John Candy movie is The Great Outdoors
Rip To A Great Director John Hughes, We Still Miss You Always
Lol at matt’s response to “it’s the visine guy”
DEL: _"You know, you could have killed me slugging me in the gut when I wasn't ready."_
(EMILY: That's how Houdini died)
DEL: _"That's how Houdini died."_
(EMILY: 😲😃🤣🤣😂)
ME: 🤣🤣🤣ROFLMAO!!! Best reaction of the Summerlin series!!
I've watched this movie every single year since it came out, and I've watched your reaction video more times than I can count because I simply love to hear her laugh. But the ending still makes me cry every time.
I'd suggest Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), with Steve Martin and Michael Caine
Edit: also Splash with Tom Hanks, John Candy and Daryl Hannah is an enjoyable movie.
For those who don’t know, the “Visine guy” was also a speech writer for president Nixon.
Bueller... Bueller...
“Dutch “ is another thanksgiving film (also a John Hughes film)
Yeah, I liked that one much better than I thought I would.
One of the best movie endings ever.
If you like this, you gotta watch Uncle Buck with John Candy
Cool Runnings for me.
Also The Great Outdoors.
Uncle Buck is a must for John Candy comedies.
I was laughing at Emilys laugh far before the laughing of the car rental clerk scene because it was SOOOO POINT ON, LOL😄😄😄😄. I dont care how manily you are that end scene will wreck you lol. Neil speaks for SO PPL in the world who have experienced an ANOYING costomer service clerk while having a BAD day lol.😄😄😄
I miss John Candy so much
I appreciate you mentioning some films that you’ve seen before. Some reaction channels aren’t as honest as you. Personally I prefer the first time reactions 🙂 ETA: counted the f bombs, nice 😄
It shows your age that you know Ben Stein as the Visine Guy. "Bueller, Bueller..."
Steve Martin only agreed to star when he read the scene with the F bombs.
In regards to the rental car scene with Edie McClurg (anoth veteran of John Hughes movies), no rental car company wanted to be associated with the incompetence shown in the scene so the production designers had to create one from the ground up. which included creating the company name, a logo, a rental counter at the airport. If memory serves they also had to shoot it elsewhere. the crew rented several miles of tracks, refurbished old rail cars , and rent some 250 cars for the scene.
Because this is a John Hughes movie many fans were put off of it because the movie itself is a more mature adult oriented theme. This is also one of the last John Hughes movies he directed.
first of all let me start off by saying that the late great John Candy was taken away from us way to soon he was such a nice man and family man who was just naturally funny ,Planes Trains And Automobiles has always been a huge favourite of mine and most definately one of my all-time favourite 80s comedies love it ,this movie will make laugh and will make you cry and self reflect on a special time with the ups and downs of what happens around thanksgiving and the holidays ,John Candy and Steve Martin work well together in this classic classic "John Hughes "80s comedy .R.I.P John Candy you will always be loved and missed but will never ever be forgotten ,thanks guys bless you .
I prefer first time reactions. I'd support some rewatches too.
Emily has a wonderful, infectious laugh. It really cheered me up watching along with you both :)
19 f bombs! Sounds like a new record! 🤣🤣🤣
John Candy is the uncle I always wanted to have.
Oh no no no, where did the airplane reaction go! God Emily's laughs were so good :/
Fletch is a great comedy to check out too.
Great movies and great books. In the first Fletch book you get a surprise 15yr old girl character that wasn't in the movie.
20:53 This moment has a whole other level of poignancy when you know that the original script had a sub plot of Mrs Page believing Neal was having an affair and thinking all these stories of delays were just a cover so he could be with the other woman. It's only at this moment when she actually meets Mr Griffiths that she realises it was all true and she had nothing to fear all along.
RIP John Candy
I still miss him and Chris Farley so damn much --- two big guys with hearts of gold
@@fredwerza3478 Gone too soon. Comedic geniuses.
I cry every time at the end too
He was a speech writer for Nixon but will always be remembered as "The Visine Guy".
And author of several books.
2 other great John Candy films are Uncle Buck and The Great Outdoors. Should definitely check those out.
Awwww...these movies are SO much more fun when watched along with you guys 🤣 thank you 🤗💕...Now…which one next?......
7:40 Oh Emily it's so much more than "the Visine guy". That's Ben Stein!
"Bueller...?"
It’s a timeless classic, but the end is absolutely heart breaking.
Such great comedy chemistry by Martin and Candy. One of my all-time favorites.
There is no better Thanksgiving movie. It doesn't exist.
A Bill Murray double header with Scrooged and Groundhog Day would be fantastic!
groundhog day is one of my favs all time to kill time and feel good
Have either of you seen the movie Strange Brew? It’s from 1983 and stars Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas from SCTV fame.
Yes! You Hosers!
Some suggestions: Three Amigos. Stripes. Caddyshack. Fletch.
Please watch “what we do in the shadows” a fake documentary comedy about vampires
There were actually three actors in this that were in Ferris Bullers day off. Steve's friend at his office at the beginning is Lyman Ward, who played Ferris's father, Ben Stein, who was Ferris's teacher, and Edie Mcclurg, who played Grace the Principles Secretary in Ferris Bullers day off.
The bus driver that drops off Steve Martin in the rent-a-car lot sounds like Wolfman Jack. Also the lady that's working at the rent-a-car desk is the school receptionist in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".
The bus driver's name is Chino "Fats" Williams. He was the garbage truck driver in "The Terminator" and the hotel clerk in "Action Jackson."
Big Trouble In Little China
Emily, your laughing makes it even more enjoyable! Happy Thanksgiving!
Steve Martin & John Candy were kind of like the David Spade & Chris Farley of the 80s :)
Not even F'ing Close!
Spade and Farley are at best third tier.
Name one movie where these two come anywhere near what Steve Martin or John Candy have done.
Fact's
Thank goodness you guys kept the highway/devil scene...some folks have been omitting it! It's the funniest scene in the movie! Thumbs way up just for that...
I'd be fine with some retrospective videos.
Yeah but no fingers in the dashboard.
One of the greatest and funniest movies of all time.
Ya gotta watch "Only The Lonely", another great John Candy movie. Also look up the story of what John did for his co-star Maureen O'Hara.
I was 17 when they made this movie, for me its one of the main memories i have of the movies and music of the time.
John Candy is amazing
It's only fitting that John's last name is Candy, because he is literally a sweet bundle of fun. So sad he died before I was ever born, but LOVE his movies!
Any movie with the 2 John's (Candy and Hughes) you know you're gonna laugh a lot and maybe cry once or twice. God i miss the 80's soundtrack though, i was only a wee lad in the 80's but i remember a lot of pushback against synth's , myself included as i was a big heavy metal fan but the older I get the more willing i am to admit they were awesome
The pure hatred in his " those rosey fuckin cheeks " line .
Also that ending. Everytime .
"I'm loving that soundtrack". That is 'Book of Love'' -- ""Modigliani (Lost in Your Eyes)" A band that unfortunately never received the fame as other techno-dance contemporaries of that time.
Yes! "I Touch Roses" is a classic of theirs. My fave is the first song of theirs I heard, "Boy".
One movie you might enjoy is Innerspace - If you haven't seen it, I won't tell you the stars, but they definitely make it a worth while watch. You don't hear much about it, but it is a really good flick. You two are doing very well with your channel. Keep it up!!
The end gets me every time, and I watch this movie every year. Happy Thanksgiving 😊
"are you crying?"
"every time.."
me too brother, me too.
I know I'm just a bit late to the party but you guys should check out Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Cain. Been enjoying your reactions by the way.
That watch brand Piaget, Martin had are like $10,000 and up now a days.
As a fellow Mississippian, I am very proud of this channel! The both of you are very entertaining, and, I am thankful to have found this channel! Keep up the good work!
This is my number one, favorite movie. I love John Hughes films, they all have a really nice vibe.
They way the world is right now, we need John Hughes back, his films never leaving you feeling bad, they're just really wholesome.
The ending makes me cry every time too. There's so much love in this film.
There were three actors in this movie that were also in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
This movie and Ferris Bueller's came out a little more than a year apart.
Both movies have post credit scenes.
John Hughes next movie after this one was She's Having a Baby starring...Kevin Bacon.
There's a scene in this movie where Neil's wife is watching TV and it briefly shows what's on the TV, she's watching the movie She's Having A Baby. Which wasn't out yet in 1987...so maybe this movie takes place in 1988 or '89...or it was just John Hughes having a little fun.
The MPAA rated this movie "R" solely because of *that* scene. If Hughes had taken it out it would have been PG, but he refused.
When shown on broadcast TV that scene is cut out, but to make up the time they put in a deleted scene when Neil and Del are on the plane and their meals are served.
John Candy was always amazing - and sadly he knew his days were numbered. His father passed at a young age due to heart failure, but John didn't think he'd retain his popularity if he lost weight. Wagons East was one of his last films - also worth watching.
PT&A is a perfect movie because it gives you everything you could possibly want. Classic one liners, exceptional story, great rapport and chemistry between Martin and Candy, a great positive message, awesome soundtrack, great pacing, and best of all this is all mixed around red in your face laughs. There are so many parts great watching by themselves but Martin's F-Bomb scene and Candy's "I Like Me" speech are two of the greatest scenes of all time! This movie has gone from one I liked to easily one of my favorites.
Just starting this. I predict there are gonna be some serious tears at the end.
Yup
One of my absolute favorite comedies ever.
It gets me in the feels too. John Candy can tug those heart strings when he needs to.
The 'John Candy in a devil suit' moment is a classic. ^^
I live next to the roadside motel that they pull into with the burned-out car:)
NICE!!
Such a great classic movie 😂
Gobble Gobble :) Happy thanksgiving all.
Are we going to get any movies that Mathew hasn't seen? Hope so would want to see a few 1st time reactions for you too. You two have great chemistry so its a joy to tune in & join yall on this journey.
We all love & miss you John Candy 😢
RIP
