Love the reaction, this is SUCH a great movie, omg. It's the rare movie that can be touching yet absurd at the same time - by the end of the movie everyone is in the headspace of being thankful for the things we take for granted - the perfect thanksgiving movie. And yeah, the F-bomb rant is the sole reason it's rated R, and as far as I know, it still holds the record for 18 f-bombs in a minute. Total Legends Cheers
The part where Neal is swearing up a storm to the woman at the desk is so relatable!! I mean let's be honest, we've all wanted to do something like that at least once in our lives when we're really pissed off!!😂😂
Lol! No way man, I've been that lady behind that desk for 15 years, so please resist the urge to rage against the effed up system at a rando employee. Although damn, Sis shouldn't be making personal calls at the desk --she may have bent over backwards to help him if he didn't go so hard with the fbombs.
Kevin Bacon *was* famous when this came out. His appearance was more of a cameo than a normal role. He actually ended up starring in "She's Having a Baby" that John Hughes also directed, and it came out the next year after this. (You'll notice two cast members of Ferris Bueller's Day Off also appear in this. The assistant to Ed Rooney is the woman at the ticket desk, and Ferris' dad is Steve Martin's colleague at the beginning.) Also, you can tell that the movie "Tommy Boy" with David Spade and Chris Farley really took a lot of inspiration from this movie.
This is such an amazing movie, and it’s also very bittersweet because of John Candy, no longer being with us. He left us way too soon. To think of all of the amazing works he had left in him. From everything I’ve heard about him, truly an amazing person. At least he has this film as part of his legacy.
There was a sideplot that was cut from the film where Steve Martin's wife thought he was cheating and didn't believe there was really a Del Griffith. Which is why she's teary eyed when they finally show up at the end.
They did have an entire subplot of the film where the wife was suspicious of him cheating. But they cut it. They still kept several takes where she sounded suspicious, like the one you reacted to.
I have a feeling you'll love Midnight Run, from the same year. Similar outline, though with an action twist, starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin. Absolutely fantastic film.
Didn't expect to see you watching this classic. It's a holiday tradition in my house. Thanks for all the entertainment and hope you and the rest of the Rejects have a happy Thanksgiving, Greg!
There actually was a plot element that ended up on the cutting room floor where Neal's wife was starting to suspect that Neal was cheating on her and that Del Griffith was a made up person. This is why she is so glad to meet him at the end of the movie. The 4K release of this movie came out yesterday and it contains over an hour of unused footage. Great movie!
I love this movie a whole lot!!! When this movie first came out, some critics said that the late John Candy should got an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor that year. RIP Mr Candy.
Kevin Bacon was filming John Hughes' next movie "She's having a baby" and Hughes thought it would be fun to stick him in this.* That movie was not released until the following year, but Neal's wife can be heard watching the movie on TV when Neal calls her. The scene is, "What if the shoe were on the other foot?" and Kevin's wife says, "I'd go BAREFOOT!" * There's a fan theory that this is actually supposed to *BE* his character from that movie. Shared universes. Pretty cool!
So fun story about this movie, my dad was a county cop and they filmed the scenes for the Braidwood Inn which was in his territory so he needed to be part of traffic control for the filming and closing off the road in front of the motel. Well my dad has always been the biggest Steve Martin fan so he was so happy to have the chance to maybe meet him and when he did, he was just a total jerk (no pun intended there). He didn't really know John Candy from too much so he wasn't all too excited about him, but John Candy came every morning with coffee and other things for the officers on duty and would spend so much time just hanging with them and getting to know the police. He has always said that John Candy was the nicest famous person he ever met and was a John Candy fan from that point on.
Great story! Thanks!!!!!!! Donald Sutherland was a TOTAL ass to me when he wanted booze which the French cafe didn’t have a license for. “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM???!!!” I wanted to say, “yeah, a drunk actor.” But my boss would have fired me. I should have turned the knife and said, “yeah, a drunk out-of-work actor.” I worked a party with a few celebrities and Danny devito was GOLD!!!!! So kind! He came out to our little kitchen a few times during the night to thank us profusely! Such a sweetheart and much appreciated! Penny Marshall came out and demanded ketchup. Not so nice. My chef friend worked so hard to make the best food and she wanted ketchup.
1:26 Ferris Bueller’s dad 1:49 Yep. Kevin Bacon (as his character from John Hughes’ She’s Having a Baby?) He was already famous for Footloose at this time. 4:47 Half of the old couple that rebuffs Kevin’s mom’s request to switch plane tickets in Home Alone 5:54 The donut eating phone cop from Home Alone (Also “Carl” in Billy Madison) 10:31 Yep. Dr. Curt Connors from Spider-Man 2 (Dylan Baker) 16:05 Ferris Bueller’s school secretary (Edie McClurg), and the scene that got the R rating 21:41 My favorite moment in the whole movie! 👹💀💀😂 23:41 The lawyer that gets eaten by the T-Rex in Jurassic Park 26:46 I’ve heard that’s Susan Sarandon in the passenger seat 27:08 Michael McKean from This is Spinal Tap 30:32 You’re good people 😊
Steve Martin also had a cameo in She's Having a Baby where they did this exact scene from Bacon's perspective, tying the two movies together which is odd considering Steve's wife is watching the movie on her TV later. Least that's what I heard like 10 years ago from someone somewhere so grain of salt.
The first time I saw this movie, the scene where they're going the wrong way on the highway, I laughed so hard. Especially when Steve Martin is pulling his fingers out of the dashboard. Omg that was great. I was really surprised at the end reveal of the movie and the turn it took. I never guessed she was gone. I think at one point I thought she may have left him. Very good movie. RIP John Candy and John Hughes.
So happy to catch this movie every year for Thanksgiving. My favorite part has to be from when Neal goes to get his rental car to when they reach the second motel just cause there’s too many good bits in there. From the rant with so much hatred and anger dropped with every F-bomb, Del messing around, the truck sequence, and the physical comedy when Neal finds out about how Del got his car. What a great movie.
Watching you watch this movie, is the biggest validation for me! I watch this every single thanksgiving since I was a kid. How They each were changed along this journey and I know its a tall order, but this is honestly my favorite John Hughes film. It's brilliant, funny, moving, frustrating and strangely relatable. Love it and love your channel!
There’s actually an insanely long cut of this movie that John Hughes had to cut down. Apparently it’s been long lost media, and still hasn’t been found. There was a scene towards the very end of the movie where John Candy sits down with Steve Martin’s character and basically tells him stories about his wife and tells him his whole life story. Steve Martin has gone on to say it’s his favorite memory of John.
It's so funny you asked if Peter Griffin was inspired by John Candy's character, because that whole "I like me" scene, was spoofed in Family guy with Peter saying the script word for word.
Steve Martin is a fantastic physical comedian - one look at his flailing run shows a guy who throws himself fully into his work. John Candy brings the heart, like he did to every role. They're a great combination; too bad they didn't get to work together more. They're both in 'Little Shop of Horrors,' but never in the same scene. Have you seen John Candy in 'Uncle Buck?'
Kevin was already known/famous. Kevin Bacon's role in the movie is the same character from She's Having A Baby... a film (like Planes, Trains) is also directed and written by John Hughes and was released a year later in 1988.
This movie has the greatest use of cursing EVER!!! I wish i didn't know about that scene before seeing this, would of been more surprising and shockingly funnier 😂
Incredible duo, such amazing chemistry. My family watches it every Thanksgiving since i was a child. I feel like this movie is overlooked in the crazy resumes Steve Martin and John Candy have.
What you didn't see at the end is that Neal's house ended up burning down because of Del and they all became homeless. Loved this movie and the twist they throw in at the end. The viewer goes through the same journey (character development) alongside Neal and it's a great experience. Happy Thanksgiving everyone
Is it any wonder this movie is considered a comedic masterpiece for so much more than the hilarious situational comedy between the two main characters. The movie is elevated by first subtly rendering a notion of how friendship evolves and why any particular individual becomes endeared to others around them simply because of the person that they are and how a complete stranger may come to realize this about someone. Ultimately of course, the train station scene at the end is a priceless piece of directing and writing that brings that notion to its ultimate conclusion. A new friendship built on shared difficulties. John Candy was brilliant in this film and is the real star of the show. Heart warming always sounds like one of those icky cheesy attributes. But the movie really is. Who isn't unashamedly reaching for the Kleenex in those last minutes of the film? John Candy RIP.
John Candy is wonderful in this movie.....he needed someone to do the things he could only do with his wife, and he connected with a stranger while facing his grief 💔 😔..... I love this movie
I’m sorry, WHAT?! First time watching this movie?! It’s a Thanksgiving CLASSIC for my family. Even if it’s just background, we HAVE to play it every year. Don’t ask me how it started, as I have no clue. It just sort of did one year to the best of my recollection. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I admit that I've always dismissed movies made before I was born, but after watching this movie, after watching your review, I realized that while technology advances, emotions and relatable situations as we grow up, don't. Thanks for the great new-generations perspective! as it really opened my eyes to the drama, hilarity, and cinema that previous generations were conveying, in hopes of entertaining not only those of those years, but anytime,.
When I worked for Pan Am, the actress who played the car rental lady was on my flight from Washington DC to Paris! She was part of the cast of the Hogan Family, a TV show, and they were heading over to Paris to film a vacation episode. She couldn't have been nicer!
Great watchalong, Greg. Yes, this is a perfect Thanksgiving movie. Everyone identifies with getting back home for the holidays. This is a movie where "when it rains it pours". Anything can go wrong, Everything will go wrong. 😆 The last scene! Brings a tear to my eye everytime. RIP, John Candy.
Best Thanksgiving Movie Ever And One Of The Best 80s Movies And Comedies ever made. Well written and funny and just a joy ride from start to end. Steve And John deserved Oscar Nominations. The Last Train Scene And Final Shot are some of the best scenes in cinema history. I wish John Hughes And Candy were still here RIP.
I had the really sad realization watching this. The scene with them sharing the bed, while also being one of the funniest parts of the movie, is also really sad when you realize that with Del's wife dead, and with the way he talks about her, that is probably the first time he has shared a bed with someone in years, and that he is probably dreaming about his wife and feeling like she is still with him.
If you guys haven’t seen Steve martins Only Murders in the building. It also stars Selena Gomez and Martin Short. It’s a Hilarious murder mystery with great characters and writing. they are in between seasons 2 and 3. If you and John ever want to react to it on the channel it would be Amazing, but if not still check it out in your free time YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED ❤❤❤❤❤
Because of this film, I always buy the Extra Insurance when renting cars and always keep my wallet on my person if I sleep while traveling. Those extra insurance packages replaced at least two cars back in the '00s.
Nice reaction. Don't know if you recognized some familiar faces like the road cop, he's Chuck, the brother of Saul in Better Call Saul; and Steve Martin's wife is Grace from The Boys.

2 more great, but not well known, 80’s movies in line with this one… Something Wild and After Hours. Both have great casting and amazing directors.
Dooood !!! Never watched? Top 10 comedies !! 🤣
...plus OCD kicking in much ? 🤣🤣
I would recommend Reservations Dogs Season One & Two reaction 💯
RIP John Candy & John Hughes. A wonderful film from start to finish
One great thing about John Hughes. He knew how to get the best performances out of actors. Makes them memorable characters.
This is some of John Candy's finest acting. Man I miss that guy in movies.
Thank God we have these archives to go to ❤️🎥

Actually three - Ben Stein was the ticket agent at the airport.
Dont forget how Due Date ripped it off entirely
@@werdle92 Due Date is so good. RDJ and Zach Galifianakis are so funny in it.
“I need my FUCKING car right FUCKING now.” One of the best monologues I’ve ever heard.
I was like .... why is this movie rated R ..... and thar scene came and was like..... oh that's why

Oh! That makes sense. I was always weirded out by the strangely passionate kiss at the end.
They did have an entire subplot of the film where the wife was suspicious of him cheating. But they cut it. They still kept several takes where she sounded suspicious, like the one you reacted to.
yes this is also why her reaction may have seemed, odd, at finally letting Del. she saw that Neal had been telling the truth
Really do miss John Candy.
This movie is comedy gold. One of my favorites growing up. 😁
I have a feeling you'll love Midnight Run, from the same year. Similar outline, though with an action twist, starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin. Absolutely fantastic film.
Love that film
Didn't expect to see you watching this classic. It's a holiday tradition in my house. Thanks for all the entertainment and hope you and the rest of the Rejects have a happy Thanksgiving, Greg!
I haven't seen this in forever. There are so many great character actors in this.

that one was won by Sean Connery.
John Hughes was truly one of the greats. I don't remember him ever making a bad movie.

Oh man this movie takes me back! Grew up without cable and pre-streaming. This would come on network TV on the weekends.

I just found out the motel room thief is a good friend of someone I know (who was somewhat of a child star himself).

I totally miss John Candy but GOD do I miss John Hughes...
The scene when he turns into the Devil I couldn’t stop laughing in the theater, classic! Thanks again!
I've watched that movies so many times especially on holiday but I didn't actually recognize young Dylan Baker until now. Damn.
By far my favorite thanksgiving film.
There’s actually an insanely long cut of this movie that John Hughes had to cut down. Apparently it’s been long lost media, and still hasn’t been found. One of the most memorable versions of Red River Valley in the score.

John Candy is a legend and he made my childhood better!
BEST MOVIE EVER!! Such a classic!!!!! Freaking love it.. So glad you watched it.. I get so much joy watching you guys..
Rip to the 🐐 John Candy
The cursing scene is one of the best of all time
I am 40. I saw this movie as a kid. Seen it many times. It is a classic. 😊 John Candy and John Hughes legends, rest in peace.
Kevin was already known/famous. Kevin Bacon's role in the movie is the same character from She's Having A Baby... a film (like Planes, Trains) is also directed and written by John Hughes and was released a year later in 1988.
I only discovered recently that that’s Grace Mallory from the boys playing Steve martin’s wife
Also Pamela Milton on TWD
@@SandraMorris51 you’re right 👍🏻
I knew Neal’s wife is on The Boys but realized she also plays Pamela on The Walking Dead. Took me a minute!😊
This movie has the greatest use of cursing EVER!!! I wish i didn't know about that scene before seeing this, would of been more surprising and shockingly funnier 😂
I still can't believe there are people in this world that haven't seen this.
Incredible duo, such amazing chemistry. My family watches it every Thanksgiving since i was a child. I feel like this movie is overlooked in the crazy resumes Steve Martin and John Candy have.
My husband and I traditionally watch this movie every Thanksgiving evening after everyone leaves and dishes are done. 🍻
Another good road trip movie is Dutch, if you haven’t seen it, starring Ed O’Neil.
One of the limited number of perfect films that could not be improved. Every element was on fire. Utterly fantastic.
What you didn't see at the end is that Neal's house ended up burning down because of Del and they all became homeless. Loved this movie and the twist they throw in at the end. The viewer goes through the same journey (character development) alongside Neal and it's a great experience. Happy Thanksgiving everyone
I'm glad u finally found this movie, was both funny and emotional... just a classic!
My guy was so angry that he threw away his rental agreement and probably didn't notice until it was too late! Poor guy man 😂!
That Infamous minute long 18 f-bomb rant is why this movie is rated R
I don't know if Peter Griffin was inspired by Del, but Peter does recite Del's monologue while arguing with Lois in one episode.
Is it any wonder this movie is considered a comedic masterpiece for so much more than the hilarious situational comedy between the two main characters. I love this film man. Watched it like 5 times and still love it every time. RIP John Candy and John Hughes great actors in this classic film.
John Candy is wonderful in this movie.....he needed someone to do the things he could only do with his wife, and he connected with a stranger while facing his grief 💔 😔..... I love this movie
Happy Thanks Giving!
Casio watches was pre cell phones. you could buy them for 10 bucks in crappy stores.
Greg you haven't seen this?? Oh boy, get ready. Your gonna love it. Best Thanksgiving movie ever
One of my all time favorites, the ending still gets me today. Also introduced me to the word f*ck and its many uses....parents not so happy though 😂
As one of the biggest Family Guy fans, I heard the Peter Griffin version of John Candy’s “I like me” speech long before I saw this movie.
I’m sorry, WHAT?! First time watching this movie?! It’s a Thanksgiving CLASSIC for my family. Even if it’s just background, we HAVE to play it every year. Don’t ask me how it started, as I have no clue. It just sort of did one year to the best of my recollection. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
so many recognisable actors in this, Chuck from Better Call Saul, the business man from Jurassic park, heckles from friends
So glad you are reacting to this movie, this movie is so funny.
Such a great Thanksgiving movie. I miss John Candy.
Just showed my wife and a friend this movie last night they were dying best thanksgiving movie for sure
When I worked for Pan Am, the actress who played the car rental lady was on my flight from Washington DC to Paris! She was part of the cast of the Hogan Family, a TV show, and they were heading over to Paris to film a vacation episode. She couldn't have been nicer!
I LOVE this movie !! From beginning to end … never a dull moment🤣🤣🤣. It’s a holiday tradition in my house now! 🤣
Love the kitty walking past at 23:00!😂😂😂
Great watchalong, Greg. Yes, this is a perfect Thanksgiving movie. Everyone identifies with getting back home for the holidays. This is a movie where "when it rains it pours".
Anything can go wrong, Everything will go wrong. 😆
The last scene! Brings a tear to my eye everytime.
RIP, John Candy.
Due Date is kinda like a remake of this and it’s really fun also. RDJ and Zach Galifianakis are so funny in it.
Dang, haven't heard about this movie in a hot minute!
It’s my Thanksgiving equivalent to DieHard for Christmas.
Still one of the funniest buddy comedy road trip movies ever made!
A true classic and very heartwarming. Though I’d argue most great comedies are able to mix funny with heart.
Dude how do you not know what a Casio is?
Best Thanksgiving Movie Ever And One Of The Best 80s Movies And Comedies ever made. Well written and funny and just a joy ride from start to end. Steve And John deserved Oscar Nominations. The Last Train Scene And Final Shot are some of the best scenes in cinema history. I wish John Hughes And Candy were still here RIP.
Ahhh yes, the best Thanksgiving themed movie that also proves…that travel sometimes sucks!🤣🤣Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🦃
It's a fantastic movie, enjoy and happy Thanksgiving.
Cannot believe this is your first time watching... where the hell have you been lad!
I lent this to a guy who never seen it, and he loved it. So he bought the "Those aren't pillows" special addition.
Steve's F-Bomb tirade is a cinema classic. I absolutely love this movie.
In the original cut of this Steve Martin’s wife did suspect him of having an affair, the movie was greatly edited.
Great film!!!!!! I’ve watched reactions to this hundreds of times! Always guaranteed laughs!!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I remember seeing this in the theater and it was really special. Such a classic!
You should react to Spirited on Apple+. I thought it was hysterical and one of the best movies of the year
Carrying cash was common in the pre debit card era.
There's a great deleted scene in the plane, where they're eating airplane food! I really like it, you should watch it Greg!
As feel good movies go...this is up there with the best of them....A Christmas Carol meets It's A Wonderful Life...
Awesome Movie and Work Bro, Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
