- Ever since I bought my Lance 975 truck camper, people have been asking about how the ride has been as far as drivability, MPG, and how it performs while towing. This video is intended to share my personal experiences with the 975 and the RAM 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel.
I am ( will be) a first time camper owner (my 2021 Lance 975 comes off the factory line 5/28) I traded in my short bed one ton for a 2019 3500 Ram Dually cummins TD-Same truck as you were driving. this video boosted my confidence and helped confirm I made the right decision. Just had the 7500 Air Lift remote control bags (after market)added for extra measure. The shop also directed me not to have a sway bar installed until after I have driven the unit- He didn't think I would need it. I pull an aluminum 2 horse trailer and love to camp with my horse so am pretty excited and also a bit nervous with a totally new set up. Thank you for the educational video . jo
I’m really glad my video was helpful for you. I know I had a lot of the same questions and concerns. From my experience, you will be more than good without a sway bar. The 975 is a great choice to give you some wiggle room for towing and gear. Be extra sure that the extension hitch you buy is rated for your trailer because I know I’m close to max with my bass boat WITHOUT a weight distribution system, so my guess is you’ll need to look into a weigh distribution setup to reach the full capability of a Torklift SuperTruss. I’m not an expert (understatement) on what that system entails, but it makes a huge difference on whether you can tow a larger trailer.
great, great video not enough people are making towing videos as a future truck camper driver this is very important for me thank you
Welcome to the team Lance, we been driving across country in our 975 and Ram dually for a few years now. 👍
Thank you so much for sharing this video Sounds like a dually is not even an option it's a must because I'm gonna be buying my truck soon and you talked me into getting a dually
Glad to help! Yes, I’m a BIG believer in the dually for a truck camper. I don’t even notice the extra width anymore, and it’s still my every day truck. You’ll be so glad that you chose a truck that will not only meet your capacity needs but exceed them as well.
We have a Ram 3500 dually diesel and haul a truck camper (not a Lance) while towing our boat. The exhaust brake is great for mountain road driving, we’ve had the Ram since buying it new in 2013 and love it.
I have a 2018 Ram 3500 4x4 6.7 Diesel with a Lance 975. Went from Sedona Arizona to Amelia Island Florida on I-40 and back on I-10. I added air springs. Ran average 75mph. Awesome trip, no issues. Took it back to Mississippi and picked up my 22 ft center console bay runner boat. I go everywhere with it. I love it, maybe I’ll see you at a lake or river someday.
Thank you for that straightforward review of your rig!
Love your truck camper. Enjoy your travels.
Good info, I just upgraded to the same RAM dually that you have there and love it. I still have a smaller Lance though, but I will be upgrading the it soon also. Happy camping, AND fishing.
Not sure if the exhaust brake works the same a a big truck but be careful when using it in cold weather. The big trucks are bad about warping the valves when the engine is hot and the cold air inters the engine for the brakes. Great Video Sonar! Very info packed as always.
Todd Richardson great info! I have not heard that. I’ll definitely be doing some research on that.
The exhaust break is a valve in the exhaust system after the valves. It works by restricting the exhaust. The big trucks have a jake brake which changes the timing of the exhaust valve.
I fold those front jack back in while on the Road and I think you should too, give you better visibility in your mirror and make you almost a foot narrower/ could save you from damaging them
Yeah, I noticed I didn’t swing them in. Definitely better with them swung in.
I’m most likely getting a dually as well. Still up in the air about gas or diesel. Camper is going to be a Northern Lite. Thanks for all the info. I’m a travel nurse currently driving all over the US in a converted Chevy Express Extended Van with a fiberglass camper top. Fully loaded I’m about a thousand pounds under payload, but wind still blows me around. I’m not a fan of wind 🌬 😬
Just picked up my F350 DRW. There’s just a cool factor about Dually trucks for sure!
Lance campers appear to be well made and have the largest market share in the industry.
I bought a truck/camper combo a few weeks ago. Both hardly used and in immaculate condition. Truck is a 2008 GMC 1 ton dually 4X4 ext cab diesel only 71,000km. The camper is a 2007 Lance 992 with 2 slide outs 2 awnings. Propane generator. Truck also has the extended trailer hitch for towing a trailer.
Looking forward to trying it out. We bought it at an RV dealer and it was a 3 1/2 hour drive home. Took a while to get used to the weight especially the top heavy feeling. Camper weighs close to 4500lbs wet.
You are fortunate enough to write the truck off and most of your diesel off as business purposes. I am assuming that is what you do. Your set-up is the ultimate, but it is not for those who can’t afford it. Even the mileage for a dually makes it insanely expensive to operate without the cost of anything else. And the certainly this current administration has pushed the cost of diesel and gas into different considerations now, as well. Have no idea what the shorter maintenance schedule would be on a turbo diesel truck, but it certainly must be more frequent. Love the set-up and what you can do with it. Hauling a big rv trailer or fifth wheel is no cakewalk, and you can’t haul a boat at the same time. Home you have continued success in your tournaments, and that you are safe on the road. Cheers!
Thank you for watching! Yes, I do write off the camper and truck, although they both have been completely depreciated now, so not doing much good in terms of taxes now, but I sure do enjoy them both.
Tow haul mode is correct especially with Liz. As I commented before a dually is way to go. Have same setup but tow a ranger. Be safe in your travels !!!
Excellent video with great honest information. You made some really good choices, number one was the dually. Lances web site says the 850 was made for my F-250 3/4 ton. Just to be sure I put on air bags and big sway bars. Never ever believe an RV dealer or a manufacture. That was a very scary thing to drive and ready to travel I was 1600 pounds over weight. I had it 11 months and traded it in on a travel trailer, which I hate pulling. The camper is the way to go but you have got to have enough truck and you do.
I’m considering an F-450 dually with a Northern Lite 10-2.
Happy and Safe Travels.
Thanks for all the great info. We have just started looking at trucks and campers for when I retire & start fishing full time!! Lol....Best of luck on your 2020 season!
My theory is that with a dually is if I have a blow out on the back, I have another tire to handle the weight till I can safely get off the road.
Yeah, that extra rubber is always good! Thanks
On your video on the truck you mentioned that it was your daily driver how difficult is it getting around and parking in a city?
Tom Schwab it’s not bad. It’s definitely not ideal for consistent city driving but I never have a problem. It’s not an easy truck to park but you get used to it.
Very informative, thank you.
I need this, i need to learn to drive something like this
just watching you drive down the highway you can see how much it is leaning side to side. how do you not get sea sick
Great vid and info... Im hoping to upgrade next year...!!!
Just remember, always be prepared on downhills. Exhaust brakes can fail. Make sure you are in the correct gear as if you didn't have an exhaust brake. I never did enough mountain driving to worry about it, but I have friends that had Jake brakes fail and had to take the truck run away lane. Not something you want to experience.
That's true. If carrying a camper, what would be the best gear downhill, depending on grade?
@@celestepalm6949 that will depend on your vehicle, diffential gears, number of transmission gears, and speed will dictate your gear choice.
@@okpanhandlrJust as an example, what gears do you usually use for your vehicle going down certain grades when carrying or towing? What grade is too steep for yours?
What are the extra Torquelift fastens zipped to your front powerjacks used for? Just spares?
I have the same fastguns, they are great, 2019 F350 dually power stroke,2020 Host Cascade .
Wondering the same thing...
Torklift wobble-stoppers I believe. Reduces camper wobble when its parked and left behind at a campsite.
Nice set up. Thank you for sharing. What year is your truck?
Great video. Looking at a 975 and was wondering what is the specifics/name of your RAM 3500? Thank you!
Where abouts were you driving when you did this video?
I was driving somewhere in GA I think. Towards Augusta maybe?
Have you had problems with any of the systems on the 975 failing or breaking? Water heater going out, water lines breaking...etc, things like that?
Doug. T I have had very little issues. I did have a coupler for the outside shower bust due to extreme cold, but that’s to be expected, since i didn’t purge that system before using in extreme cold. Otherwise, all the components are working perfectly.
Nice video. What type of extension did you use?
Looks like the fast gun is not connected.
That's what my husband just pointing it out...🤦♀️
funny that this video, you can see you're top heavy sway..on a straight road.
How much more time for a trip vs a loaded car? When i tow, i add 2hrs 🤣
It really depends on how you normally drive. You definitely want to take it slower, but I’m still usually running 65-70mph on the highways.
Mpg?
Best guess for how much $ , at least 120k for the complete package .
I'd consider it a home I no longer need to pay mortgage for. Still cheaper than most homes now.
What do you think of the 6.4 Hemi vs the Diesel?
$9,000 less money and 800 lbs plus less weight best choice if you are concerned about payload numbers. That was my choice with 4:10 gears and the 8 speed trans. 👍👍👍
