World famous MATKA ROTI of Nagpur + Orange City of India + Vidarbha Classic Food + Thin Pohe Chivda

  • This leg of Nagpur Food Tour revolves around two iconic food items and a few popular street food fares from the city. The former are oranges and matka roti. We started by visiting a matka roti making unit with our host Mandira who is the Co Founder of The Orange Odyssey and later on joined Amol, its other Co Founder.
Nagpur's famous matka roti is a paper thin and crisp flatbread that is prepared over an upside down clay pot called matka. The making of this traditional bread is a highly skilful process. Wheat flour is mixed with water and kneaded for hours until it turns into a slimy mass. A dollop of this slimy dough is carefully stretched over the arms and draped over the hot inverted pot. In a matter of seconds the thin and lacy flatbreads are ready. It goes really well with all the spicy curries the city is famous for. Now only a group of ladies from the city are working hard to keep this culinary art alive. We went to meet a group led by an elderly lady, who runs a matka roti take away outlet at Shatabdi chowk. It is a huge open kitchen where these rotis are rolled out at a startling pace.
After this we joined Amol who took us to Kashibai Rajghat, the place where Nagpur's orange story had begun. The historical anecdote about the origin of these oranges was quite fascinating. Next we visited the orange market to decode its taste. These oranges have a distinctive sweet and sour taste, high juice content, and bright orange color. Nagpur oranges have also received the coveted GI tag.
Next we visited Shree Heera Sweets to try some orange flavoured sweetmeats. This included their signature orange burfi, orange kaju katli, orange soan roll and orange kaju halwa. They were both luscious and refreshing because of the orange flavour. So if you are fond of oranges and sweets then this is the place to be in Nagpur.
From there we reached Sanjay Uphar gruha to relish the very unique tari samosa. Yes you heard it right. Samosa dunked in a hot and spicy saoji masala based curry. The base of the curry was dried peas. Surprisingly both the samosa and curry were too spicy for our palate yet it was irresistible. We managed to finish it off as the flavours were so rich and amazing.
Soon after we went to Shrikrishna Uphar Gruha and had aalu bonda tari and their special fried chivda. The former one was quite decent while the latter one was delicious. Fortunately we got to see a batch of this masala chivda in the making. Tarri refers to the tempering that goes into a curry.
Vidarbha's cuisine is characterized by its simplicity and emphasis on wholesome local ingredients. And to try such homely dishes we went to Aaicha Swayampak. As the name suggests, they specialize in the dishes that are made at home kitchens. Here we had that included gola bhat, kadhi gola, zunka bhakar and khawa poli. The food was simple and quite good.

It is called "lambi roti" in local Vidarbha language. Once upon a time (say upto 1985 approx) it was made in every household of Vidarbha region. I have seen my Nani and other senior ladies making it at home. But now a days very few senior ladies can make it .
