Thinking about exercises that really changed how I see things and play the guitar, switching up SUBDIVISIONS in Legato lines I think is a HUGE part of when I started to get a bit more control.
The preset is "Eric Lead 35"

Gear talk is nice but skill building is nicer....🤟

Since you asked, what I’d really like is an “80/20” (Pareto principle) style legato course for experienced players who’d like to incorporate some legato into their playing. So the course would focus on the key 20% to get you to “minimum viable legato” in a short amount of time, which could be expanded upon in later courses. Also, IMHO what makes you unique in the crowded field of guitar instruction is that your legato playing is supremely melodic and follows the changes. So maybe “melodic legato” is what you can teach us all 🙂

I would love a series on building your legato, great content as always :)

Your legato playing is a cut above most players, and is distinguished by its fluidity and musicality. I think great legato playing has more to do with the picking hand than the fretting hand, and I hope you focus more on that in future videos, lessons, and curriculum. The ability to hide/disguise string changes, accents, slurs, hammer-ons, pull-offs, glissandos, etc. is where the art of legato lives, in my opinion.

I love both the lessons and the gear/modeler stuff. The great tones enhance the great playing and its cool to learn about both. That said, this lesson was eye opening. Thanks

I’d love to see more of this, to echo a previous comment, love all the pedal/modeller stuff and i get a great deal of fun from your presets, but your technique/musicality stuff is brilliant, has really helped me develop and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I agree with the crowd, a "How to Incorporate Legato Into Your Playing" course would be helpful. A ground up method to starting the legato journey. I'm sure your sponsor can help with that.

One of your earlier videos transformed my legato playing in minutes. The one where you alternated the runs up and down - 1 2 3, 1 3 2 ( 1st finger, 2nd finger etc). Still practice it and now, concentrating on skipping up the neck in a smooth transition, and adding a two finger tap above, amongst other add ons! 😂
Great vid though and always so helpful, refreshingly so John. 🙏🤘

Oh damn, this is a really good lesson, thanks man. I love these sorts of lessons where you start from something basic and then teach a lick that sounds great and I can learn it and build off from there. Your teaching is really improving as well! not that it wasn't good, its just getting better. I remember in one video you said you weren't super confident in your teaching so I thought i'd just mention it :D

This has to be one of the BEST opening Sequences JOHN has Done. the slides he does at 1:58- the end are really something else. Very Character/artist soloing here, I never hear a Tom Quayle even come close to this Artistic approach. i should not keep knocking Tom Quayle all the time, when he does slow down he does show me much more though. He is a very knowledgeable player, I personally love John Cordy style better!!!!

I'm confused on many legato practices that should i pick the string or use hammer on descending? Since you pick the string for ascending of each string. But on many practices, there is no picking the whole lick, so when to use hammer on and when to pick?
