Spearfishing Canada - MASSIVE Lingcod near Vancouver Island

  • Spearfishing is not really something you hear about in Canada. The water is cold, the visibility is often poor and you have a pretty limited selection of fish that you are allowed to catch. There are no pelagic species that you can go after, so most of the time you’re going after Rockfish, Greenling, and Lingcod. It’s still a lot of fun finding new spots and going exploring this beautiful underwater world. Congrats to Chris Samson (@chris.samson.7) on getting this monster Lingcod, the biggest I’ve ever seen.

    Nicely done, I miss diving out from the Island when I lived in Ladner in the early 90's, was fun but you had to have your wits about you for fear of a seal coming out of the Kelp beds or a large octopus taking a liking to you,...they love to play,...until they don't. Fascinating animals, I've heard if you dive an area often enough the octopus will recognize you. Can't say that ever happened with us. None of our crowd were spearfishing, but I'd love to try, maybe a trip down to the coast from Edmonton after the pandemic is over!

      Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leaving a comment! It's great to hear that you have experience diving around the Island and encountering octopuses and seals. They are indeed fascinating creatures, but it's important to always be cautious and respectful of their space when diving. It's also interesting to hear about the possibility of octopuses recognizing individual divers - they truly are intelligent animals.
      I'm glad to hear that you're interested in trying spearfishing on a future trip to the coast. It can be a fun and rewarding activity, but it's important to always do so safely and responsibly. And of course, we must all do our part in following pandemic guidelines to keep ourselves and others safe. Thanks again for your comment, and I hope you have a great day!

    Isn’t the water cold in summer in Vancouver? You’re wearing 5mm diving suit right? I’m a diver and I live in California but moving to Canada soon just checking if diving there is normal and doesn’t require heavy suits

      Hey Moha, the water is warmer in the summer, however the deeper you go, it makes less of a difference. I dive 7mm year round. But you would probably be fine in the summer with a 5mm farmer john.

      I know this comment is old, but i just went diving for the first time with a "proper" wetsuit, and i cant believe how warm it felt (not on my hands or face though. I cant wait to get spear fishing.

    Great video. I live on vancouver island and have have been getting into free diving. I wanted to know if you ever shoot lings diving from shore rather than boating to a pinnacle? I have been Gathering the gear so I'm able to get in the water and get some fish. Subbed

    • @WatermanSurin
      @WatermanSurin  4 роки тому

      Hey Parker, Thanks! Stoked you liked the vid. Yes you can definitely get lings from shore you just have to know where to go... With that being said you can also go out to a pinnacle and get skunked. It depends on the day/weather/tides/moon phase etc..

    Is regulation allowed to use spear to catch in bc?

    • @WatermanSurin
      @WatermanSurin  5 років тому +2

      Yes, you are allowed to spear specific species. For example you cannot spear salmon, but you can use a spear to catch rockfish. Dont take my word for it though. Always check the regulations in the specific region of BC that you plan to be fishing.
