Painting a Commodore 64 Case (Disgusting C64 Part 3)

  • It's time to paint that disgusting case that we weren't able to restore properly just with elbow grease and retrobrighting. Rather than trying to match the original breadbin case tones, I'm just picking a bright, loud color and going for it. I'll cover choice of paints, technique, and how it turned out, as well as the restoration of a few more odds and ends.

    As I child of the 80s who ended up in engineering and computer science because of his C64, I would like to say this is COMPLETELY in keeping with the spirit of the C64. In the era of monochrome, CGA, and whatever the Apple II had, the Commodore was all about creativity, color, and music. It was just so much fun. I think this pays homage to the spirit of what it really was all about.

    @14:24 guess the rust remover dissolved the zinc plating on the steel screws, thus uncovering their true and original dark colour of the steel.
    The zinc plating has dual purpose. On the first hand it is a mechanical protector of the steel, preventing oxygen and moisture to get into the steel itself. And when the galvanic corrosion kicks in, the zinc, being less noble and acting as an anode in the electrochemical pair, corrodes faster and prevents the corrosion of the more noble metal that acts as a cathode. In this case, the steel is not corroded.
    Great work on the C64, it looks absolutely stunning!

    Hi Noel. You do a great job with all your videos and the comments you make. I think that 8-bit guy just places anything rusty in vinegar and leave for a day or two. It just removes the rust and doesn't damage anything like what you experienced with the springs. I tried it myself with the vinegar but I tried it with white vinegar and it worked. Keep up the good work :-)

    • @NoelsRetroLab
      @NoelsRetroLab  2 роки тому

  • @CallousCoder
    @CallousCoder 3 роки тому

    What you are feeling is the top laquer especially when you choose matte. The fine mist, will always make it matte and more matte because the fine droplets, matte has more evaporative qualities so that it already partially dries in the air. You can always wet sand it with a 1000 to 3000 grit.
    But it will become a bit satin. If you want smooth finish than it’s a thick glossy coat. That’s also the reason why I painted mine with car paint and high gloss as well as the guitars I made and repainted. And with glossy you need to give it a wet coat to prevent the little droplets. And you definitely needs to wet sand that to get it smooth.

    Excellent results! Makes me wanna spray paint anything :D One tip though, don't use any spray cans held horizontally, and remember to clean nozzle after use. :)

    I had one as bad as this, worked and was very cheap, so I sprayed it with proper plastic spray paint with 4 light even coats and a thick gloss coat and hardened it in UV light between coats and it stayed on there for years. I painted it "bubblegum pink" for a lass who liked retro gaming lol

    Excellent resurrection of a rough case. I always tell people that rattle can paint jobs look good as long as you do the proper preparation.

    Well if the ZX Spectrum can have coloured cases then so can the C64. Electric blue looks so amazing.

    My god that blue is amazing. That was a cracking paint job even considering you'd not painted a case before. The finish is consistent with matt clearcoats I've used before. A quick wet sand with 2000 or so would get you want you want I think.
    Beautiful though. I think that's that most tasteful retro paint job I've ever seen.

    Fantastic result. I seem to remember Ms Mad Lemon doing a slight sandpaper in between coats. That might help with the paper like feel. Love the Blue by the way.

    Hi Noel
    It came out well, i thought it was lighted when you were spraying it, maybe its just the sunlight and inside it is darker
    A few tips for next spray, i am no expert and have done about 5 or 6 different pc's and now just take them to a local panel shop who does them in same day or next few days for me and all it costs is lunch - you can ask for a colour but i end up with some toyota / ford / GM greys and if i was something specific they look on the shelf it they have something close eg frog green, beige
    So, the tips i have are
    1. When you first spray ( you done the right thing start inside ) tilt the can another 45 degrees and do all the curved pieces eg with the cover on its face you spray the raised curved sections in on go - spray then light or with the can more further away
    2. next do what you done
    3. on the face side, do not lay them on the cardboard, you will get a paint run gathering on the sides and it will build up and stick on the bottom of the case to the cardboard
    The way to fix this is to raise the piece you are working with of the base board, you can use a smaller box to sit the C64 cover on or even use some food cans or containers, i keep some plastic jamb jars and ice cream containers for that reason - i spray some model cars for my son this way
    Another option is to use office paper clips, bend then like a J or W and use some string or fishing like to a piece of timer ( broomstick is good ) or that hard electrical conduit if the parts are light
    You mentioned the smoother paper texture, that is the final clear coat, i dont think the texture is controlled by the final spray of matt / gloss / semi gloss as that is the amount of absorption / reflection of the light of the paint - but generally any spray painting fill sup imperfections so it may simply be the primer and paint had filled in more of the natural texture of the C64 case and the high and low texture spots and less height distance between them
    Good work especially for your first attempt
    If you want the multi colour, do what you have done but mask of the bottom corner when you do the blue, when you finish the blue and it dries, you then mask all of the blue so only the remaining bare panel is showing, decide how wide the strip is eg 15-20-25mm, typically i place tape when i want it , then tape next to it and then remove the first stripe, then tape up the rest showing, spray colour #2, do the same for colour #3 etc
    When finished there will be ridges/sharp edges between each colour - this is normal and use wet 1000 grit sand parer and water / soap / detergent and lightly sand between the 2 colours to desharpen the edge

    Noel, wow...that turned out great. The electric blue could easily be called Selectric Blue as IBM had their Selectric Typewriters available in that color. It looks brilliant. I kind of want to see you restore a cassette drive and a disc drive and do them in matching electric blue! UA-cam recommended the first video in this series and I was hooked and watched all three! Liked and subscribed! Keep up the amazing content. 😀
