Donizetti is just as great an operatic composer as Wagner, Mozart, or Verdi.
Anna Bolena is a superb masterpiece; Verdi owes his oeuvre to Donizetti's accomplishment.
From 1830 thru the 1860's Anna Bolena was
an absolute repertory staple in Europe, like Robert le Diable and Faust were also.
👏👏 Although Sills is truly wonderful as Anna, it is Verrett who is AMAZING! Verrett set the bar very high as Giovanna. Wish Sills and Verrett had recorded the Donizetti Queen trilogy together.👏👏👏
It is a great recording. She herself said that she shortened her career by many years singing the three Donizetti queens. The result, however, was astonishing.
Singing bel canto cannot be bad for the voice, unless her technique was wrong!!! As per her result, it was obvious that her technique was off!!!!
If you say so. You are one of those opera queens who know everything. Get lost.@@BVforFreedom
Love this rendition, Beverly Sills extraordinary❤
Bravisimo.
I admire Beverly Sills so much! And the double trills at the end are so impressive - you really FEEL the passion! And the High E flat!
I really appreciate beverly sills and other few sopranos who devote a lot of their career for donizetti's works like leyla gencer , joan sutherland , montserrat caballe , sondra radvanovsky ... etc . Because I think that donizetti is almostly forgotten compared to other composers like verdi , puccini , wagner or mozart .
Straordinaria ed imponente esecuzione, finale da lacrime
Sills did a high voltage Bolena!!!
Thank you for opera.
...and Shirley Verrett !!!
Dio Santo !!! Sono incredibiliiiiiiiiiiiiii .....Che cast favoloso !!!
love it over and over thank you !
Marvelous ❤️
❤️
Did anyone else listening to this for the first time think that maybe Stuart Burrowes would sing a high D at the end of "Nel veder la tua costanza?"
Anna bolena, I love you !

No doubt that Sills pushed her voice, but here is the real Anne Boleyn. You don't even notice the three octaves or the embellishments; the character has simply come alive.
@@despertardelaconciencia369 your lady who definitely had the ugliest voice ever is certainly not the heiress and you talk right out of your starboard nostril. Who died and made you Jesus od the operatic world?
@@petelovesbevsills I am so eternally grateful to both of these great ladies! Sills was the first one I heard in this role when the recording originally came out, and I fell in love with her performance. To this day, she is still my favorite Anna Bolena. However, the first time I heard Callas' recording, I also fell in love with her rendition as well! Both are so very different from each other, and both are still the greatest Anna Bolenas I have heard. They each give something totally awesome inspiring to the role that no other soprano have done (including each other)! To me, an opera world without Sills OR Callas would be a very sad world. Especially on this magnificent role.
My thoughts precisely! Her voice may have been a little "brighter" for this role than others, and may have pushed her voice some; BUT, she truly brought this role alive, in all ways! Vocally, musically, dramatically, etc! BRAVA!!
Brava Verrett!
It's a shame that the studio recording heard here doesn't match the photo cover above. This is the Beverly Sills/Shirley Verrett studio version. I have no idea what the photo above is, perhaps a pirate recording. Shirley Verrett's name doesn't even appear above and she's the most important character in the opera after Beverly Sills. What an error!
This is not a pirate recording. It's on Amazon:

Verrett's name is written on the back cover, 3d row
Eine gute Einspielung kennen diese ein spielung
why cut the overture?
Vor allem gut sils inder titelpartie
Quite the recording of imaginary confrontations in history
Unquestionably the Best Anna Bolena - Sills is better than Callas - impeccable legato with a performance by Shirley Verret that is simply outstanding. This is the BEST Donizetti Opera - by far. Americans must be proud of these two American voices singing the Italian Master! Brava Ms. Sills & Brava Ms. Verret!
First of all I'm sincerely tired of people that everyday compare such worderful artists. Don't have you anything better to do? Can't you simply enjoy the music and the artists. Second point: better than Callas? For the people that don't speak italian, that don't know what is the "fraseggio" , what is the "legato", generally speaking what is the "Belcanto" Sills is a wonderful singer and I'd like to ear her today..but is enough to ear every word of Callas to understand that no one can be compared.... how she says: "sian brevi i detti vostri..cauti..sommessi.". or. Giudici ad Anna....ad Anna giudici?!!! Or "Coppia iniqua" and so others thousands examples but you're English or American and you can't understand the colours of the Italian language without offend anybody..

Sills has too much wobble in the voice and a tight jaw to be able to phrase bel canto legato as it should be phrased. I love her in lighter music, but it's really not an operatic voice.
However one feels about a particular singer, every one of Callas's recordings of Bel Canto operas are heavily cut. For those of us who care about hearing these operas complete, a recording like this is invaluable and beautifully performed.
No, not even close. Callas is still the best Anna Bolena ever.

To my ears, Verrett sounds like more of an Anna than Sills. Sills's voice never had the right heft, size, or depth of color for these roles. It was much better suited to Louise , Baby Doe, and Manon.
Shahrdad I read somewhere that a company wanted to do Bolena with Verrett as Anna. But it fell through.
Verret is the perfect mezzo for this role. Perfect. Sills has the more expansive collatura - AND legato. Together they are perfect. I saw Verret sing Adalgesia and then Norma a the Met! Fabulous. But Anna was made for Sills and she was the best. Listen to her subtle legato that NO OTHER Anna produced.Had she not been so married to the City Opera she would have been among the world's greats! Love this recording. You will never here a finer one!
The Suliotis and Horne recording is far better than this. Sills is just too shrill, She didn't have the right tonal weight for this role. No one tops Suliotis.
That's your opinion and very few agree with you. Suliotis's voice was shot to ribbons when she recorded this opera. No one tops Beverly Sills.
For me, there are 2 sopranos I've heard in this role that no one else can compare with. And these 2 are virtually "polar opposites" from each other in almost every way, but both are phenomenal! They are Beverly Sills and Maria Callas! To me, they are both the ultimate Anna! BRAVA Sills! BRAVA Callas!
Horrible Sills...
