i have an m2 2022 and it’s fantastic, had one of the iconic old design mbas, a 13” 2017 and that was great too. such a smooth and seamless experience. used a 2015 mbp 13” too which was slower but that was because of monterey.

I love this little guy for traveling. I messed around with chromebook’s for a few months and it became clear that for my uses I needed a full computer. For $150 I couldn’t find anything that traveled better. Plus, if something happens to it all I’m out of is $150.

This is why I picked it up in the first place years ago. It is really good for carrying around. I find the 12 inch retinas to be good for the same reason. So portable.

got mine for 80 euros last year before i started uni (CS) and it was such a good investment. It was my first mac and i was surprised to see how well optimised Macbooks are. I see that you are running and HDD, but i swapped mine with an SSD and it runs actually pretty good. I've used it as my main workstation due to the time spent at uni but the small display is the only downside that would make me want to upgrade. I am thinking of getting an M1 pro / M2 when M3 drops, but for sure i am sticking with Apple. MacOs simply is more responsive, lightweight and optimised

gotta say my first mac i bought in 2024 in january are 2010 Macbook Pro, i kinda hate it because it runs on Core 2 duo, quiet laggy if you open multiple tabs, even though it's already ssd and 8 gigs, so i bought again 2012 13" macbook air with 8 gigs of ram, and i like it, super light, for work i prefer this mac instead of my Lenovo V310-14isk I3, i dunno it just feels special, could still run multiple tabs even though it runs on ddr3

Oh yeah, anything with a Core 2 duo is really going to struggle these days.
It is always great to hear about someone who finds a real use for one of these old MacBooks. I think the main contributing factor to mine being a bit too slow for me is the ram. With 4gb it really struggles.
I still love this little computer and it gets used to play UA-cam in the background, or as something for my kids to practice typing on.

The processor, display resolution etc isn't the problem at all. Those can run and show anything you really need. The 1366x768 resolution is normal for this day common laptops, so you are better just watch a 1280x720 videos anyways with it. The CPU can run anything app wise you need from small machine, do some 1080p video editing (just expect those 12-15 FPS rendering times) and music editing to be limited with dozen or so tracks.
The SSD is not a problem, as you can buy an adapter to get a M2 inside at any size you need. That cost like 7 € or something and 1 terabyte is enough for anything on that machine.
But what will kill these machines very quickly, is the RAM.
You have 4 GB of RAM, and that was at the time the top model. You needed to get the i7 model to have 8 GB of RAM.
And the common Macbook Air at that time has only 2 GB of RAM.
With that RAM amount, you are going to have just few web pages open, couple youtube video tabs and machine is slow as it is swapping memory to SSD.
The downside is really that RAM is soldered directly to motherboard, so you can't just swap to new without small electronics operation.
If that machine would allow to swap one RAM stick, it would still be possible upgrade to 8 GB on all machines.

    • @IrensTech
      @IrensTech  7 місяців тому

Thanks for the comment, and the info. :-)
The RAM is definitely holding back these older machines as you say, but I also feel that the graphics chips really struggle, and this makes them run quite hot.
I recently picked up a 2013 Pro with 8 gigs of ram, and a faster processor and graphics chip. It also had a Retina display. The difference in usability is massive.
      Cheers
