  • The Lincholnshire roman coin hoard of early 4th century roman coins is believed to be the largest of its type ever discovered in Britain. #shorts
The hoard contained more than 3000 copper coins and was found by two metal detectorists in Lincolnshire in July 2017.
The archeologists say the coins were possibly buried as part of a ceremony. The coins were found in a ceramic pot, buried in a large oval pit. The coins date to the time Constantine was declared emperor in York 306 AD. The coins are now with the British Museum for valuation.

Thanks to metal detectors, ancient coins are now much easier to find, hidden treasures all around the Roman world.

Isn't the "Normanby Hoard" of 50,000 coins considered larger? That hoard was also found buried in a clay pot in Lincolnshire. As copper and bronze coins were the main types of Roman coins used in everyday commerce, I'm thinking buried hoards like these were just as likely to be the savings of random well-off merchants or traders as they were "ceremonial offerings". The owners just somehow were unable, or never got around to trading them up to silver or gold coins before their demise.

Do you know if they were able to separate the pot or did it have to be taken apart to remove the mass of coins?
I know it’s super small but I feel like even the clay that held it could tell us quite a bit.

It's always "ceremonial" when they don't have an explanation. Gotta love archeologists imaginations.

Back in the Roman times, this was about three thousand asses or about one hundred and fifty denarii. With this much money, one could purchase a cow or rent out a moderately sized apartment that would possibly on the second or third floors with two or three rooms. I suppose you could also purchase a pair of Roman senator's shoes, which were rather similar to popular modern shoes, wherein the rich wear them for looking fashionable. A good quality sack made of leather was around the same price too.
I believe this is worth about eight hundred dollars.
