Here it is friends: the new adventure we've been dreaming and saving for since we first met 8 years ago. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!! Now that we've lived remote for over a month we've established some daily routines we wanted to share with you all... but there really is nothing routine about living in a construction site with many different projects on the go 😝

How Did We Get Here?

After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods 😊

Cabin name: Sanctuary (Definition - a place of refuge or safety, a nature reserve)
It really is our sanctuary through all of the craziness of the world today!

Eamon and Bec are really awesome. A lot of fun to work for and work with. There sweet presence on the video is not a act, there actually like that 24/7, Well at least some of the 15 hour days I've seen them. They treat everybody great. And feed me very well. They are really awesome couple.

Hot tip: your skin will thank you. Put a dish with water on top of fireplace so moisture is released into the air will fire burns. Learned this from my grandpa who used to live full time in a tiny cabin. Love the video!
My parents did this. Always a (metal) dish of water on the wood stove.

Totally! You guys can do plumbing, electricity, carpentry, building work... And you're not even 30! Although good idea doing it before you have kids... They are the biggest hinderers of any project...
Yes. Experience showed me that any project that looks like lots of work is actually twice as much work.

I love that you had that conversation. I was brought up Catholic and went to Catholic school from kindergarten to graduation. I no longer consider myself Christian, but I am spiritual. I used to question everything and take it literally. I was quite resentful. Today I respect whatever people believe. No more arguing and trying to make my point or opinion "the right one'. Great video!
The best part of this video was Bec cleaning out the van and having to take a break to hear Tim extol more praise for yoga pants. ❤️
Several of my ancestors are from a little town called "Traveler's Rest." I love the name, and I think it fittingly applies to your new home, where you and your traveler friends can rest together. It will not just name the cabin, but all your land and lake.

I recently was diagnosed with depression (like a lot of people during this pandemic), but your videos always make me smile and bring me joy. I don't find joy in a lot of things these days so I just wanted to say thank you to you two for everything 💕
You hang tough, young lady. Take your Vit D every day and try, if you can, to get some outside air every day. I know that's difficult but even to open the door and breath in fresh air. It's a beginning. And remember, this too shall pass. Sending hugs from northern ON, Canada

I think you should name your cabin Serenity. “The goal of meditation is to reach a state of serenity. When your mind is still and perfectly calm” :) we love watching your videos, and you’ve really inspired us. Love the Foxes xx

It’s a lovely name but very overused. As an alternative, how about “Serendipity” - an unplanned fortunate discovery.
Very fitting to both buying a cabin because of covid and well the act of travelling and van-life generally. You never know what you’ll come across but if you have faith, a positive attitude and a spirit of adventure you are sure to come across many fortunate discoveries!
Plus it includes “seren” that everyone loves.

Great name - we have an iconic Aussie film called "The Castle". There's a much used line from the film "how's the serenity", spoken when the family are staying at their weekender "Bonnie Doon ".

Okay... Hear me out... and I know this is long, but I think it'll be worth your time to read :) The name that I think yall should name your cabin is Hygge. Before thinking it's an odd name, listen to what it means... "Hygge" has origins in Denmark and Norway (where I would consider to be two of the most beautiful places on earth). It means happiness... but not just any form of happiness... it's the rare kind of joy and contentness that comes when everything just feels... right. It's the moments in life that are brimming with happiness, comfort, loved ones, favorite things and beautiful places. When everything fades away and you are simply in the present moment. All frustrations melt away and you feel content with life. Blankets and candlelight and movies. Lakeside views and laughter and bonfires and coffee and happiness. This name represents something that I'm sure yall hope to have lots of in this cabin. I think you both hope to have "hyggelig" moments in this cabin and on this land... to have moments where your soul is content and cozy. Hygge. 💛

I grew up in Alaska and I love having a wood stove in the house even though we had a Toyo oil stove as well. It heats the place up so nicely and gets rid of moisture and the chill so quickly. Every house in the north needs a good quality wood stove.

Hopefully, if you left the fridge off, it should be left propped open. It helps keep it from stinking (no matter how clean it is, they smell in long term storage)

For your cabin, a mash up of your names along with how it's situated on your land: Beacon Hill. As for this video content, so many funny moments; Eamon's face when you suggested he deal with the compost toilet was priceless. Bec trying to vacuum the van and remaining polite while Tim kept going on about his yoga pants use, hilarious. And phenomenal quick dinner, potato hash. Will have to try it.

@@eamonandbec some regions are still in kind of a lockdown, but where I live (which is the “Italian” part of Switzerland) it’s not the case. There still are strict rules about social distancing and so on but it is still pretty chill.

My husband is serious about his keys. We have at least three sets of keys for everything. One for his key ring, one for mine and an extra that sits in the house. It’s saved us several times over the years.

My mans locked the keys in our Subaru Forester during a 4 month trip across USA in the woods in northern CAlifornia in the rain! Man it just feels sooooo good when u hear the pop of the lock! Time for a spare key! My dad always had one in a magnetic holder somewhere under the truck. Obviously it happened to him more than once! Love the fire in the winter!

Nice to see you both cozy. Keeping busy with projects can keep the winter/Covid blues away. My van was emptied into my apartment and I miss the ‘my place’ feel of it... there’s a project in there now. I love to find furniture on FB Marketplace... got a TV and mission style entertainment center ... had to completely dismantle it humbly in their driveway- now, to get hardware and new wood to fix and make it easy to assemble/disassemble for future moving.
I really want to turn around and restock the van- a ready GO vehicle... even in the dead of winter- I think that is important.

Since you will be using the woodstove, cook your meals on it!!!..and keep the old windows, and make small A-frames, to start garden plants in, you can start fall garlic bulbs now in there...in late spring, early summer you will have fresh garlic, they store very well in a cool dark place!!!..this will be 1 less thing you will have to buy....you could also wrap your woodstove in copper water lines, connect to a water storage tank for endless hot water!!!

My how the table has turned . I've been watching you guys for years and usually in warmer climate's as you traveled . I left Maine in November after doing a quick 1 month Van Build and here i am watching you work on your cabin in the cold , while i'm basking in 73 degree's here today in Sun City, Arizona ... I've been there and done that. I have a cabin in the woods in Vermont. Now i'm retired and i'll enjoy the warmth for awhile... Stay Safe .
