- Welcome to Ron Spomer Outdoors! In this video I react to an older video I did on the Sabatti Big Bore Dangerous Game Double Rifles - 470 Nitro Express Double Rifle. It was a lot of fun to review this video and reminisce about this rifle. What would you like to see me react to next?

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Good lord, you need to talk about double rifles more. I have literally zero use for them, but I want one so badly.
Buy a double barrel shot gun run slugs through it then it’s a rifle go for a 20 gauge same sped as 12 but greater distance with the 3/4 oz slugs over the 12 guage 1oz slug cause it’s not as heavy as a slug I can make dead hold hits with my pump 20 guage with slugs out to 100 yards
I'm in the same boat - no need for it but I want it. We're all crazy, eh?
Check out Kentucky ballistics. He has up to 700 nitro express double barrel rifles and a 4 bore he uses on his channel
Same lol. I dont need one but I want one!
As an Adirondack hunter, I have plenty of use for one chambered up to .45-70. I love combination guns .
I'm a bow hunter only, but a ballistic nerd. I love the history and info. On these rounds and guns. This is one of your best videos! Keep um coming uncle Ron!!!
Thanks Mr. Skeptical. I shall.
Beautiful just beautiful
It's been a dream of mine to own a double barrel rifle ever since I read that one book, which I can't remember which the gentleman has a four-bore that was given to him by his grandfather... I would dearly love to have one but the last time I checked we're looking at 12 grand and a year and a half...
Cabelas used to sell Sabatti side by sides several years ago, when they phased them out of the stores they sold them on clearance for $2800-3500 depending on the caliber and grade. Regrettably I never bought one.
My bank account is probably glad I never came across one of those lol
I'm thankful I was able to pick up my 416 when the CZ550 was phased out though
In Australia, we have plenty of feral.Water buffalo 🐃 I've never shot one, while perhaps not a Cape Buffalo, still a very nasty piece of work
Gorgeous. I used to have a Miroku Westernfield 12 gauge side by side. Only gun I ever regret letting get away. Ornate but not gaudy. Great pheasant gun.
Thank you Ron for highlighting the tradition of double rifles. I would love to see reviews of other makers and other styles like drillings, shotgun/rifle combos, etc. It is too bad that the algorithms can't distinguish between videos on assembly/disassembly for maintenance versus modification.
470 nitro express, my favorite nitro express bullet of choice. Certainly.
More gun reviews? Yes please and thank you!
More rifle reviews are always great to watch. Getting different perspectives from experienced hunters is always helpful before we spend our money.
I would love to dive down that rabbit hole . Excellent video.
Very nice rifle.
I enjoyed this review because the double rifle is so different than the guns I'm familiar with as a hunter in the US. I would enjoy more reviews of guns less often seen in the field or at the range. Maybe a nice drilling or some older guns like a Remington self loading rifle. Pretty sure that anything that piques your interest will be interesting to the rest of us as well.
Once again top notch. If memory serves in early 90's there was a double barrel 50 cal black powder rifle that was under $1,000 might been CVA that might perk few ears up lol. Thank you
I think the barrel regulation sucked if I remember correctly. You had one flip up rear sight for each barrel.
@@billm2078 that would not be to bad you could set diffent distances one for 50yrd other around 150yrd
Pedersoli makes one around 1k aswell
Thanks for the info on the double rifle. It brought back memories of when I was looking for a "dangerous game" rifle. The cheapest new one I could find in 2016 was in the $12,000.00 range, which is why my wife bought me a Weatherby MarkV in .460 weatherby magnum (she says the store forced her to buy the gun because I drooled over it too much).
It would be interesting to see double rifle reviews on Sabatti, Chapuis, Heym, Krieghoff, Holland and Holland and Purdy.
Reviews interviews ,work and hunting stories 😊im all ears
I like the old school classic look of these rifles and I bet the would be an amazing "brush gun".
No hog can survive being shot with that !
I need one of those Sabatti .470 N.E. double rifles, but the Safari Big Five Classic version, which is even less expensive than the EDL, because it has less engravings, which I prefer anyway.
I've seen one in Italy for 7000 Euros.
I would love to see more gun reviews! I always recommend your videos for anyone questioning a new caliber, having that sort of reference for the firearm as well would be phenomenal! Keep up the amazing work sir.
Quite a while ago I used to make Ammo for a friend who had a 500 x 3 inch Black Powder Express double rifle. Not in the "Nitro Express" range - but still a fair thumper with a 50 cal bullet on top of 136 grains of 2F.
A deer rifle, really. A tad light for elk, but workable.
@@jacobmccandles1767 Jim Corbett used it for Tigers. The very similar 50-140Sharps was no slouch on pretty much anything. A bit light for Elk?
@@johnf3f810 actually you're quite right. I have ZERO idea what I thought I was replying to. The .500 BPE is certainly no marshmallow shooter. I'd cheerfully use it on anything except perhaps the Big 5.
@@jacobmccandles1767 No worries, we all (including me) get it wrong now and again.
@@johnf3f810 I was active on several threads at the time. I hunt elk with a .50-80-385 loaded Hawken. Far less medicine than a .500 BPE.
I have Sabatti chambered in 45-70. I installed a 1.1x4 power Schmidt and Bender scope in Contessa quick detachable mounts. It has become my favorite deer rifle!
Yes, more reviews please. Thank you
I would love to see more gun reviews from you, Ron. I recently discovered your channel, and it'd fastly become one of my favorites. I'm a young man, and my wife has cancer, so going through your back log of videos and podcasts has been very therapeutic. Thanks for all you do!
In 2004, the year I retired from my 34-year law enforcement career, I treated myself to a retirement present of a Gebr Merkel Suhl 140-2 side-by-side double rifle in .416 Rigby. Ejectors, double triggers (front articulated), two leaf express sights set for 50 meters and 100 meters (folding), 23.5 inch barrels, weight of 10.5 pounds. It prints touching holes at 100 meters. I paid $7,500. I have taken two Oryx in New Mexico, where I lived then, plus two elk there and one Colorado elk, all one shot kills.
I now live in NW Montana, in the Mission Mountains and carry it hiking because it’s grizzly country.
When it’s cold at night, I sleep with her to keep her warm. Unloaded, of course. ❤❤❤ this rifle!
It sounds absolutely wonderful!
You’re living the best life.
Love the detail and heritage you cover on beautiful rifles such as this double barrel. Definitely want to see more!
double rifles are always so cool
When you disassembled the double it reminded me of an old saying “Lock, stock and barrel”.
I have yearned for a double in 450/400 3" for a long time. I have a box of Hornady ammo plus brass, bullets and dies. Just waiting for the day! Thanks Ron!
Ron I would absolutely love to see more gun reviews. Especially the classics such as double rifles, etc. Thanks for sharing!
Will Stokes. The older I get the more older rifles I buy. I hunted this last week with an 1881 Argentine Mauser. What great fun ! I live in South Africa and regularly go hunting with my 3 sons and grandson. Great family time! More rifle reviews please !
I would like to see more gun reviews. I have fired one round from a double rifle. .700 Nitro Express. My shoulder and jaw was sore for a week. Well worth it imo.
Love to see more rifle reviews and hunting cartridge / caliber reviews. Thanks as always for informative videos!
Teddy's "big stick" was a H&H Royal Double .500 necked down to .450 for his african hunt.
Rifle shot a 480 grain projectile at around 2000fps for a perceived impact energy of around 5000 ft/lbs.
I can't wait for Sabatti to announce their new importer, been wanting a Rover since shotshow.
Gives me flashbacks back to my time in the Bayou :(
YESSS!!! MORE REVIEWS! If love to get your take on so many guns out there today, and especially of those guns that came out long ago. I love your videos.
a few gun reviews would be a good thing. I always enjoy your perspective on gun related items as I find you to be factual and concise. Some reviewers are too narrow minded to enjoy the diversity that you bring to a review.
I really enjoyed this video. Please bring more from the past.
Yes, reviews are wonderful
This rifle content is so interesting! There’s so much UA-cam garbage out there with grown men dressed up like operators, training to kill imaginary bad guys. Loving this grown up rifle knowledge!
Doubles are beautiful. I would love to have one. Thanks for the video
I love your videos! Thank you for all the great content and hard work!
Many thanks, Lil-Mo.
Love the channel Ron. I’ve been a subscriber from the start. Always a great pleasure to watch your informative videos. More gun reviews would only add more greatness to an already great channel. Thank you for all that you do in making this content for everyone to enjoy and learn from. God bless, and stay great 🙏🏽
Thanks Cape Verde. I appears we will be doing more gun reviews.
I'll watch any reviews you post Ron
Yes Ron, more reviews.
I’d like to see more rifle reviews for sure, not just bolt guns but single shot and lever actions also.
Ron, I’ve been looking at the Ruger No.1 that you spoke of that had been converted to a 20ga, that’s just crazy cool.
Great discussion on a SxS DG rifle for ALMOST the common man, LOL!
Nice to see a double rifle video Ron. I really wanted a double rifle in 470 after reading Capsticks books until I realized how much the rifle and ammo costs. So I looked at a double in 458 Win Mag, still pretty pricey. I ended up with a Ruger No 1 in 458 Win Mag. I got an excellent used one for a good price. Now I just need the money to go to Africa.
Yes please do more reviews. Especially on some of the more unique guns like this one. We don't need any more reviews on the common guns, everybody else is doing them. They are getting pretty boring.
Thanks. I have heard of double barrel rifles. Just not ever seen or fired one. Didn't know of over under double barrel rifles. New to me.
Yes, please do share more rifle reviews.
Yes. Gun reviews would be fantastic!
Thanks Ron...I would love to see more of your big game rifle reviews...any rifle reviews for that matter.
Yes more gun reviews
In regards to Mr. Roosevelt's rifles, he had his "Big Stick" Holland and Holland double rifle in .500/450 Nitro Express, "Big Medicine" Winchester 1895 in .405 Winchester, a custom 1903 Springfield and a Winchester 1876 in .45-70.
Great video Ron. Heym also makes ‘affordable’ double rifles, though not as ornate as the Sabatti. Some of the British doubles ( Holland and Holland, Purdy, etc.) can easily hit $50K. I handled one once just to tell the wife ‘I considered a rifle that cost more than your car.’ I finally scratched my Big Rifle itch with a CZ550 American Safari in .458 Lott, the last of the double square bridge Magnum Mausers.
Thankyou,Sir, for telling me to fire the back trigger first! I'm 75 and this was new to me. I have 2 twist-barrel Parkers, and learned (in front of a beautiful woman) to NOT put a finger on each. Knocked me down and bluddied my nose.
Browning sweet 16 has always been a dream
Been watching for a while and just subscribed. Yes, please do gun breakdown videos! I watch ‘Forgotten Weapons’ all the time and just love seeing how any given gun works! It is so fascinating to see how the designers mind (Browning’s mind is the BEST) works to accomplish something.
I find these gun review videos of exotic arms very entertaining - I would very much like to watch more.
Love the gun reviews.
Why is this video no longer on UA-cam? Because it was my favorite video. I'd love to see more gun reviews specifically safari rifles. Love the channel, keep up the good work.
Hello Ron, thank you for all of your videos they are very informative and fun to watch. I would really like to see more gun reviews. I really trust your opinion, and I think that anyone with common sense would appreciate your opinion. I would really like to see a more in-depth review of the 350 Legend ans well as the new 400 Legend. I would also like to see reviews on the 17 Hornet and the 204 ruger. Thanks again for all you do, and I look forward to many more videos.
Teddy was shooting 500/450 custom made double rifle. Which is in museum in Kentucky
Would love to see more of those classic gun reviews, Ron! Maybe a new production Model 70?
Tikka/valmet 412 has many options for double rifle. It got the 2x 30-06 barrel too so it is double the best there is!
I have a Tikka 512 in 9.3x74. Love it.
I really enjoyed the interesting Sabatti side-by-side rifle review, and also the romantic flashback in time!
Damn it Ron, now I want a double rifle. I have to laugh because you said to use the back trigger first, but then show a video of you doing just the opposite. I'm just rattling cages. Lol. Serves you right for making me want to buy yet another firearm I absolutely don't need, but will get just because I want. Keep up the good work sir.
For someone that is a proud owner of a .458Lott, I couldn't imagine a double barrel.
Great video. My favorite was always the Heym Model 88 B with sidelocks. The are a bit pricey and start with non-engraved side plates at about Euro 25 000.- and from there go up to over
Euro 100 000.- . Second good choice is the Merkel 160 AE with sidelocks which goes from about Euro 15 000.- for the base model and up depending on wood and engravings. These companies guarantee groups under 2 MOA and their barrels are not crossing over like many of the old double rifles and inexpensive ones. They both have the double bottom lugs and in addition a Greener lock mechanism. Over under doubles are not as desirable due to the larger opening angle of the box lock. I had an over under with sidelocks from BRNO for driven boar hunts in Europe and it grouped excellent with both barrels. It was under Euro 5000.- and a very fast handling gun of very good quality for that price. In Europe they have an E-gun site where you can get double rifles at a reasonable price, if you have a European acquisition license but most sellers won't ship overseas.
Thank you for this.
The double rifles along with the Drillings have always been an interest to me. I always have wanted to own a double but they are very expensive for a just because I want one. Drillings are in the same category just too much for something that would only see range time and no to limited hunting time.
Well, if I ever hit the lottery then I'll go for it. I do like looking at them and learning about there operation.
Love the reviews
Pedersoli now makes double rifles in 22" and 24" models, also imported by IFG. The 22" models are available in 8x57 JRS and 9.3x74R and the 24" model is available in 45-70 and 450 NE. The model is called the Kodiak Mark IV. The also make muzzle loading versions in .50, .54, .58 and .72 calibers. I had a .72, and it would make you aware when you pull the trigger. I've wanted another for a while. These big muzzle loaders trace their lineage back to the professional ivory hunters of the mid-to-late 19th century.
I’d love to see more reviews. Always fun watching big bore reviews. I’d like to see the North American type of hunting rifles also
Well done, I was fortunate enough to have my great uncle leave me in his will a H&H .375 double rifle made in 1951. He was a professional croc hunter in the Aussie top end.
I sent the rifle back H&H and they sold it, I used the money to get She Who Must Be Obeyed a new Volvo and a couple of normal rifles for myself😁
Today I was shooting paper with a Winchester 45-70 and thought THAT had some recoil! Nothing at all compared to the Sabatti shown here.
Thanks for this Ron, and YES I sure would like to see some reviews, maybe on some Winchester ( Miroku built ) rifles, if you can.
Hello Ron,
More rifle reviews? Yes Please!
First thank you Ron for your well thought trough videos. The reviews, where you look into the details of the gun and contrast and compare to other weapons and technologies, are hard to find, and so necessary for people who are looking to purchase a hunting rifle or shotgun, and I wish you would do more of them - manufacturers sensitivities be dammed.
I am exploring drillings and double rifles in the american west, where some work has to be done to deal with the longer shots and distances here. The 7mm Brenneke both bolt and rimmed versions, are great candidates for a western cartridge, when loaded with modern powders and high BC bullets. If you decide to review a double barrel 7x65r, I would be very excited to hear your opinion, especially since this would not be a dangerous game rifle, but a plains rifle with both quick target acquisition and fast follow-up shots.
Definitely need more reviews
Yes more Gun reviews and thanks Ron for this excellent video...
Old Navy F-4 Phantom 2 pilot Shoe🇺🇸
I got a double barrel side-by-side coach gun and grew to really like it it's 12 gauge two triggers and I've shot it both barrels and crazy enough one-handed
I really want a 45.70 carry for all animals small and large.
I really like that you brought up the sabati 470NE double rifle. I am in progress of buying one in Finland. Only issue here in Finland is that the government has got a thing in their head about any rifle caliber from 375 h&h that they are somewhat of a 50 bmg. Well we all have a different point of view with these things. ❤
I'd love to see more rifle reviews
3 min of grapefruit accuracy 😂
I'm always looking for more content about dangerous game rifles and ammo.
You have my vote for some old ones
In the movie leage of extrodinary gentleman. Sean connelt had a double rifle that he used and it was according to the dialogue it shot to
Oint of aim to 900 yards
Roosevelt's Holland and Holland was a 500/450 Nitro Express. I have a dozen doubles and never fire the rear trigger first. Most never do either.
I would love to see more reviews
Awesome Ron! I live in grizzly county so maybe a double would be the way to go but hopefully I never have to find out!
More gun reviews for sure!!
good idea
Yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing a few gun reviews from time to time. Still really love hearing you talk about ballistics though.
IIRC, this caliber was employed by Jim Corbett in ‘Man-Eaters of Kumaon.”
Beautiful rifle. I'd love to have an original Holland and Holland double chambered in 375 H&H with express sights. I don't need one but who doesn't love a beautiful double rifle. My bucket list rifle is either a Ruger M77 in 375 with express sights or a CZ550 in 375 with express sights. That would be the only rifle that I'd ever need. Everybody thinks I'm crazy for wanting a 375 but with 270 gr SPs it would be an excellent rifle for everything from small deer to Kodiak bears. With a good scope you have trajectories that are almost the same as a 30-06 with 180 gr bullets at 400 yrds and a Lot more energy. I'd just run open sights and use it for 100 yrd and less deer hunting. My Mossberg 500A with high brass shells has about the same recoil and maybe a little more than a 375 so that's not an issue. To me it's the perfect all around, do everything caliber.
Yessir, in answer to your question, more gun reviews would be great!
Sir. I love your channel. I agree with your thought here, it would be nice to see some more gun reviews from you as well. Please. Thank you.
I'd love to see comparisons of some of these new straight walled cartridges vs each other and some of their older contemporaries.
Lots of great books on African big game hunting. The 7x57 killed more elephants than any other group of cartridges used at the time. Bell.
