    This bass fishing video explains how to fish a swimbait. Matt uses a Huddleston Deluxe for the example but these basic retrieves can be used for every swimbait for bass or even saltwater species like Calico Bass.
    Many bass fisherman are afraid to cast a swimbait. Their size is intimating and it makes it difficult for anglers to believe they can work. If you use these 3 simple retrieves you'll gain confidence quickly and begin catching big bass on swimbaits sooner. Its not rocket science, any fisherman can do this. If you throw the bigger baits and stick to it, your turn to catch a monster bass will come sooner than you expect!

    Awesome! I've had a hud for a while but never really knew if I was throwing it right or not. When your crawling that thing that slow especially with a 5:1:1 it doesn't lay over on its side? That is why I can't wrap my head around that crawl. I just always feel like I'm imitating a dead fish being drug around. lol. Thanks again Matt! You guys rock!

      hudds are designed to stand straight up like a trout restimg on the bottom.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому +3

      That's why you're throwing a hudd or other high quality swimbait (we linked to some others in the video description) if you're using a knock off they'll lay on their sides. The high quality baits lay upright on bottom and look great at super slow speed. :-)

    so true on the 3rd method you speak of. biggest bass i ever hooked and saw was the same. on fly, sneaky pete just bobbing it in the same spot by giving the slightest of strips and she comes beneath to inspect and almost "smells" the fly. a few quick, short striips and she was on! ....for a second, way too small a hook for that big of a fish! damn, a maddening strike

    Are there any special considerations to take with regards to these swimbaits when using them in the southeastern US where the water is notoriously murky or stained?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому +2

      When that water is dark, slow is generally better. Although the bait doesn't have much movement the water displacement will help them find it.

      Consider adding a gold willow leaf underspin and Pro Cure Super Gel to any swimbait. You’ll enhance the sight, sound, smell, touch, taste & feel of the six senses.

Many videos just show people catching fish or promoting some baits and tackle. You show exactly how you work the baits and what tackle and baits you use, without pushing people to buy specific baits and tackle. I am just starting with big swimbaits so I been collecting assorted baits but, I am having trouble finding a reel I like. I bought a Hudd rod and I have an old garcia 6500C on it but casting is not what I like. I have been looking at the Diawa Lexa 400HD because of what I have been reading and watching on UA-cam. I fish from the bank so I need castability and a deep spool so what I hear this is the one. Is it hype or the real deal? I am fishing (well not yet...health issues) for mainly Striper, Bass and Catfish. Is it worth 300 bucks?

    the jerkbait description on the final retrieve is perfect. i used to fish the original LC Flash Minnow in clear water in NY. i could see bass come up and track it and i would just kill it. the bass wouldn't move an inch. maybe drift downards under it. then, without fail, giving a couple quick reels would make those bass commit to grabbing it.

    Do you prefer the top set hook over the line through set up and maybe you could which set you would use for certain conditions.Thanks again Matt and Tim for your dedication to teaching about the thrill of fishing.

      We asbsolutely prefer top hooks when its an option. The fish stay pinned better and you land more of them.

    Never fished them... In my mind the the open hook would get caught up too much. Is that not a normal problem for this bait?

    Yessssssss.... This is the video I've been waiting for. Are you throwing the regular top hook on these different retreives or do you opt to the BB rigging? Again... Awesome video.

      Always, always top hook. Not a fan of the BB rig or any trailer hooks.

    What budget rod reel and line would u recommend for a begener I have been using a 7 foot havey action ugly stick with a 4600 ultra cast with 20 in mono and I have mised every bite I have got

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому

      Yeah that's a pretty light setup for swimbaits. I'm not familiar with the reel but it will probably get you by... but you need to step up the rod. You can't get much under $100 for a decent swimbait rod. Check out the 795 at this link. bit.ly/2bGvlVV

    How long are you slow rolling back to the boat for? Do you go all the way until the bait starts to lift off the bottom or have you found the bite comes at a first certain percentage of the cast? Thanks for the video guys, I've been searching the past couple weeks on your channel for this kind of video. I thought you had made on already a while ago, but I guess I got what I've been looking for!

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому +3

      Hey bud, thanks for watching. Come all the way to the boat. On a given day you'll find them biting on a certain part of the cast but that can change from day to day. There is an older video as well, if you drop down the video description its got links to all the products but it also has a link to that older video. Hope that helps too!

    loved the video especially because I'm trying to get into swimbaiting. one question though, if I'm mostly going to fish in lakes where trout are not present would it matter if I used a trout colored hudd and if so what color would be best? thanks

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому

      In my opinion, it doesn't matter. If you have a forage base that one of their colors match then use that but here on Clearlake there are no trout and "rainbow trout" is still my favorite color of huddleston.

    i was fishing a 5.5 S-trout i kept getting follows right up to the dock and all of them had some size to them but they just would not bite it, i changed up my retrieve a couple different times and they still wouldn't commit to the bait and eventually they just stopped following it all together. any tips to fishermen new to bigger swim baits?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому +1

      Your best shot is that first cast. After that you're working with an increasingly educated fish. Some days its just not their day and you have to come back but the only mistake I see is that you kept casting. Next time just give them a couple casts and move on... come back later and try again.

    What is your favorite all time 8” Huddleston Rod? I don’t think you’ve gone over the rods before. I’ve watched a ton of your swimbait videos I’ve just saw some basic over views but never a really specified rod

    Water temp here in Texas is still 75° should I still be creeping the bottom?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому

      Depends on the behaviour of the fish. If they're on bottom, yes you need to creep.

    Hey Matt. or Tim. do you think a allstar 7'11" extra heavy Flippin and frog rod Is good for Huddlestons? I am starting to get into big swimbaits and I want to know if that is a good rod for them.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому

      That's a very big rod compared to a "typical" frog rod. Its definitely not ideal but if you're wanting to test the waters you could get away with it for a bit.

  • @tedmccarthy1401

    awesome video Matt!!! I am thinking back and the Swaver retrieval types are very similar with the Huddleston. So my big question is if I am throwing one or the other, what would you say is the major difference in retrieval? Thank you so much for your time and knowledge of bass fishing and keep up the good work Matt!!!!!

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  7 років тому

      The S-Waver is much more "reactive" meaning you do those things much more often to the bait. The huddleston, even when you're trying to be really reactive will only be done 2, maybe 3 times in the entire cast.

    Hey Matt, Im going to be fishing Dixon Lake (HUGE BASS) down in southern california this winter for a few weeks. Stocked trout so the Hudd should be nice. But it is a very clear lake and m not sure what to use as a leader. 17 or 20 fluro too light for a 6 or 8inch hudd? I know you use 30 mono but that just seems like it would be too visible on a clearer lake that has fairly moderate pressure.
    Thanks!
