    Hi Mike! just want to say thanks for sharing these for free. Some of your tips like this one are fundamentally essential for everyone to learn. Wish you a bigger audience, cause you simply deserve it.

      +Sutan Antonius Reinhart Situmorang Cheers Sutan!
      The audience is growing steadily and I much prefer to have 'grass roots' quality viewers who really want to learn about mixing than the viewers who are just looking for the quick fix. I just can't do videos designed only to attract hits. Slow and Steady Wins the Race!!!
      Best!

    Great tips Mike! This is why I love gain staging on the clip gain of the waveform prior to starting a mix.

    that gain staging before analog plugin tip was gold! didn't see even single video with it in the last 3 years

      Yes it was gold yes I watched hundreds of videos and never came across it I'm almost ashamed to admit it.I've been mixing with analog plugins is wrong for years. My filters was always low. Now I can tell instantly it was wrong.read freaking manual.wow smh

      treztracks Hey Trez, I have these moments all the time where I realize I didn't understand something that seems obvious in retrospect. It's what you do after that realization that matters most.

    just picked up several analog plugins on sale, this was the best explanation i've heard of gain staging specifically for analog modeling. i've been testing where the tape sim specifically starts breaking up and washing out the sound and it's way lower than i would have anticipated. i can't get enough of the history content too! love learning about how and why different devices were invented.

    Could do with a video on hitting tape and DAC emulations hard enough to avoid too much noise in the unused headroom vs crushing out your signal

    So i set every Track on -18 on Input ? So Every Sound if its Drums or A Guitar or a Vocal goes in at -18 DB ? and then set the Balance with my Post Faders or whatever Faders that dont affect the Input of my Channel ? So every Sound in My Track the Loudest and the most Quiet one i do them on -18 DB Input at start. Then do the Leveling with my Mixer Faders that are Post - so they dont Effect the Input gain ?

    Hey Mike, which metering settings do you use (assuming you're on PT11) do you keep your meters at 20RMS?

  • @dulla8469

    the manual thing is definitely helpful, everyone who buys an analog processor read the manual, and with plugins it should be the same

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately, the manuals keep getting shorter and shorter. Call up the manual for the Waves c1 Compressor. It's 60 pages long!

    Hi Mike, so with the calibration of level does this mean that the RMS level of the instrument should be inputting at -18 if the plugin calibrated to -18?

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  4 роки тому +1

      Ideally yes. This is not the case often with live performances so you have to average it all out. I will sometimes set the gain using the highest level section in any given track to -18. Also, not all plugins are calibrated to -18 and the data is often hard to find.
      This is more of a guideline so that your gain structure is consistent, flows well with headroom through the plugins and doesn't overload your mix bus.

  • @NonIdentifiable

    Is it a bad idea to set up my gain structure using the input meter on waves plugins like CLA-2A? I find myself using a gain plugin right before that or any other waves plugin to make the input meter hit between -6 and 0. Should I use a dedicated meter plugin instead?

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  7 років тому +2

      No, not a problem but check the level standard on the VU meter screw. I think it is defaulted to -18. If you are not familiar with VUs and how they work with different instruments especially percussion. It might be best to use a dig meter and get the average level somewhere around -18 with the peaks no higher than -6.

    Waves' audio engine itself can never be analog, but don't be bullshit and study the essence of the sound.

    • @muzixtory3489
      @muzixtory3489 4 роки тому

      But it doesn't have to be analog unnecessarily.
