This is great! I’m gearing up to install a 5.3 in a low mile v6 third gen with a T-5 and have been looking around for similar builds. Looking forward to more
From my knowledge the v6 t5 is different, they have a different input shaft so you will need a v8 camaro t5 but yeah its a good option if you arnt going for a lot of power.
@@HackSquadGarage I have a v6 t5 I’m planning on throwing behind a 5.3, it has the same spline count as the v8 t5 so what’s different about the input shaft?
Maybe you've figured this out since its been 3 1/2 months, but I have an 82 that I'm in the midst of planning for my swap and the transmission cross member hole/bolt locations are further forward on the frame rails in the 82 (and some 83's) due to the shorter transmissions used (82/83 came w/ the 4spd manual or 3spd auto). All the information i've gathered tells me to just drill the holes in the frame rails where the cross member lands. Also, this means the 82/83 drive shaft is longer and may not work with your T5. Same w/ the torque arm. I'd love to see the test fitting and detailed installation of these when you get to it!
Yes! Actually we showed it in a video but I believe it was UMI that makes a crossmember for 82-83s that also relocates the torque arm. It has bolt holes for both versions. So no drilling the car. We used that and welded on an extension piece of steel to reach the mount, we shaved that mount so the t5 is straight instead of slanted. Used a 4th gen camaro t56 driveshaft fit perfectly. The holley terminator has been on back order for 2 months but it's on the way! We'll show all that again for sure when we get the stuff we need to finish it.
We've been working on it slowly, my brother has put it on the back burner over the last year as other cars took priority. It's hard to stay motivated on a car you've never driven. Currently he's in the middle of filming a video wiring in the holley terminator x, when we have enough to put a video together I will upload. We will finish it! We have not forgotten about it.
The reason the crossmembers are advertised as 83-92 or 84-92 is because the 82 F-bodies were factory equipped with either a 200C or a Saginaw or T10 in stick cars. The crossmember is further forward than in an 83-92 car, which is why the crossmember is a different width than your factory 82 crossmember.
was there ever another update for this build? this is sweet. Im running a 6.0 and a t5 in my 78 malibu wagon and currently figuring out the crossmember/trans angle issue haha
The project is just waiting for its ecu and wiring harness, money has been a little tight and we're trying to get a holley system. We ended up having the wrong cross member for the 82, we got a umi brace made for the early f body. We did have to make a plate to extend the mount forward, we were going to make another video when we had some progress to share other than that small change.
Its not if, its when the t5 blows up. The case is the problem, it flexes under power and thats what causes the carnage in the transmission. It will stay togeather if your not being to rough with it but thats hard to do lol
My brother ended up getting married and had a lot of associated expenses with all that and hasn't had the funds to get the terminator x. Hes also trying to balance other project cars. It will make a come back here soon. His other car is basically done and then he will get started on the camaro again. As far as the drivetrain it's all done, the swap is all done it just needs the computer, harness and injectors.
@@robertk.4958 We have one that we already cut down for the swap, but he really wants to use the terminator x, mainly for the software since we mostly tune ourselves. Hp tuners has some limitations nowadays.
Trans blow up yet? I love T5s but they can't take much abuse behind big power. 305ft pounds of torque was the max power rating for a stock T5. I've rebuilt a few with billet steel counter bearing retainers and they'll handle a about 50-75 more ft pounds. GM never put a T5 behind a V8 larger than the 305tpi engine. LS engines put down a lot more power that's for sure lol
I’ve gone 12.50s on DRs with a WC T5 in an 84 15th Anniversary, mild ZZ4, 3.73 posi car. Ran it for years. Centerforce DF clutch, and a Pro 5.0 shifter. Left at 4 grand and powershifted every gear at 6k. Didn’t let off the gas until the stripe. The T5 never missed a beat.
@@Joesmusclecargarage if they're built right with preload on the input shaft and counter shaft, they'll hold together pretty good. If left in factory stock built condition, they're ticking time bombs.
following up on the trans mount/crossmember issue, how did it go together? what about the shifter did it sit to the passenger side now or still centered?
We had to make a plate to extend the mount back to the umi subframe but it worked out great, the shifter is centered in the hole but it's a little to far forward so we're making our own shifter arm so it's osee closer to the driver. If only it wasn't an 82 we wouldn't have these issues.
Awesome project you got going on there. I’ll be at that point soon. But I have one question. Why didn’t you guy clean up the engine bay first? I still have my 305 in the can and I’m cleaning and painting what I can with the engine in until I get around to pulling it. Right now I’m trying to keep the car mobile til I do the swap.

We'll do our best to get some content out as soon as we can.
We should see the car make a comeback to the channel here soon. The t5 swap works just fine but the car is still waiting on its holley terminator and wiring harness. So we have not driven it yet obviously. Getting the shims right for the slave was the only hard part.
@@hd_sportster_man4773 we actually need to reshim the t5 because it's overextended atm. When the holley terminator we ordered a month ago finally arrives we will make more videos.
Nope from everything I've read and the pictures I've seen on the write ups you have to have the BBC bell housing with the addition of an internal slave. It may be due to the clutch/flywheel size I don't remember.
I ran into a similar fitting problem with my LS swap Hooker brand cross-member on my 83 Z28 however, my mounting holes were only off by like 3/8". Speaking to the folks at Hawks Motorsports, they told me the trans tunnel on the 84 cars was wider however, he asked me if my car was a 700R4 automatic car (and it is) if so, it should fit as apparently they were different. I was able to make it work but it took some messaging to do so. Likewise, the torque arm bracket integral with the cross-member was off to the left side by 1+ inches, so I had to make a spacer and go with longer bolts. Very curious how you guys worked this out. Lastly, I did a search on Summit racing website, and they denote fitment of the same Hooker brand cross-member for the 82-83 Camaro with (in my case) the 4L60E trans, and 82 - 87 for the Camaro sport / Berlinetta. It seems strange that the trans tunnel would be different depending on the 3rd gen. Yours is a beautiful car, the white with gold really works, especially with all the fresh paint / bodywork.
Yeah we had some similar issues, we ended up getting a umi cross member I believe made the early 3rd gens, it had mounting hold for both 82-83 and the 84-92. It out the torque arm mount close to the body but it all worked well. We did have to make a plate spacer to reach back a bit to line up with our transmission mount, it was off by about an inch forward and 1/2 off to the left, used some 1/4in thick steel to bend to shape, bolted it in place and we'll weld it to the cross member when everything is finalized. Right now we are dealing with clutch adjustments, it looks like our throw out bearing is hyper extenting and leaking fluid. So we need to figure that out without hopefully pulling the transmission to reshim it.
@@HackSquadGarage Sounds very similar to mine. I have one (hopefully last) problem, it appears the Hooker mount places the tail-shaft a little high, course, I ran out of time due to winter here in MI. mid Nov. so I hope to be able to continue and test run it maybe by mid May.

I'm having an issue with the transmission mount, I've found that it puts the trany way out of center of the tunnel. Are you or did you have the same issue??
Yes we had the same issue even with the better transmission crossmember, what we did was take a thick steel plate, drill some holes to mount it too and were going to weld it to the subframe later. Like an extention to the transmission mount.
Hi, any updates on this build? Did the speed engineering headers work with the T5 to LS swap? Just curious because I’m doing the same swap until I can find a t56 that isn’t $4000 and has 156k miles on it 😂
Yeah currently we are trying to save up enough money for the holley terminator x, but 2 of the other subarus decided to blow up so it's next after that engine rebuild is done. The headers fit perfectly actually, making an exhaust past that will be fun since that transmission crossmember is quite large. If you arnt planing on making a bunch of power the T5 is an option.

@@skywatergarage it was a stock LS1 camaro clutch/flywheel we had left over, corvette pilot. And they maybe several different brands on adjustable internal slaves for the T5, I don't have a link but we used one that has shims to get the spacing right.
@@HackSquadGarage any corvette pilot or a certain model? Is yours running yet? Appreciate the replies. And fast at that.
Why didn’t you use the Camaro Bellhousing that angles it?
LS has a different bolt pattern than the old small block Chevy. The BBC bell housing works with the LS polt pattern and let you use a LS1 clutch.
@@HackSquadGarage same bolt pattern just one is not drilled an tapped on the block i have a th400 on my LS in my car
@@hd_sportster_man4773 The factory T5 bellhousing is made for a 153 tooth flywheel and won’t clear the larger 168 tooth flywheel of the Gen 3 engine. That’s why the 621 is used.
@@Joesmusclecargarage yes i found that out lol thanks
What adapter did you have to use to get the 5.3 to the t-5?
No adapter, we used a big block Chevy bell housing and a stock ls1 camaro clutch, had to do a little customization with the transmission mount and internal hydraulic slave but it all works.
@@HackSquadGarage thanks
Can you reply to me with a trans to 5.3 parts list?? Cheers!
Camaro v8 t5, BBC bell housing, ls1 camaro clutch/flywheel, umi torque arm relocation crossmember, ram adjustable t5 internal slave 798-78137, hawks swap pedals with a holley adjustable master cylinder. Had to extend the mount for the trans thats about it.
Which headers did you use
Speed engineering ls swap headers. Fit perfectly, easy to install too
Tkx would be cheaper and better than a t56 you can shift out higher
that poor T-5
