Ever notice how many of the best musicians also have a great sense of humor? Perfect example with this gentleman right here.
To be honest, if you can crack a hi-hat or ride, you're definitely doing something completely wrong.
It would have been funny if he broke his cymbal while making this video.
LOL
I was just about to comment on that. Lol you can tell even b4 what hing the video this guy isnt experienced.
@@edchaos2679 This unexperienced guy toured with Mariah Carry, who did you play with?
@@drumzzz100 Black Flag. The Dickies, the Queers, Mighty Bosstones. The Guts, and I was Bam Bam McConnells drum tech when he was with Skid Row and Sabastian Bach.
@@edchaos2679 lol it must be sad knowing your supposed qualifications are still undermined by your stupid comment.
Those Soultones cymbals.... they sound good...
admittedly they do, even that ugly ass green ride lol
Amazing I would say
"HOW DO YOU BREAK A HIHAT CYMBAL!? I DON'T GET IT!!".
Yeah neither do I. I know people who do and it's seriously baffling.
Simon McDowell I've broken hi hat cymbals....
Gabe Droppo I don't envy you unless you are endorsed.
Simon McDowell ??
Simon McDowell: I’ve got hats from 1965, and they’ve yet to crack. Not even keyholing.
Simon McDowell
I play metal
I hit my hats hard
I use 2 bottom hi hats because the tops are to thin
I cracked the top quickly when I got it replaced
I’m a heavy hitting rock/metal drummer and I use 2b’s and I’ve never broken a cymbal in my whole career. It’s how you play them.
Man I don’t know how I got to your video but glad I did. Have me a set to gett back into playing and was doing this. Love your st8 to the point, in your face tips. Don’t understand the 👎🏽 from ppl. Thank you!!
Playing drums over 50 year and I've never cracked a cymbal. I do own a cracked cymbal though. I bought a used set of early '70s 15" Zildjian hi hats and saw nothing glaringly wrong with them. They well old and tarnished ( not green, but very dull) no biggie!
While I was cleaning them up I noticed a crack in the bell of one of them! I couldn't believe it! These things are as thick as earthenware dinner plates and it has a 3/4" crack running with the lathe groove in the middle of the bell.
Doesn't effect the sound any. They do sound awesome, but I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it!
By the way, those Soul tone cymbals you're playing record great!
Jerohn you are one of my favourite people on Earth!
Good video for people who don't think about some simple like this.
I felt like I was in drum school and he was the principal lecturing students cuz he was tired of finding and replacing broken cymbals. I'm that kid in the back like, "Principal Jerohn I know how to hit a cymbal sir. You swipe that bad boy! You know it wasn't me right?"
Nice tips and display of how not to destroy or "eat" cymbals out like a maniac, younger Chris Coleman!
And another thing I love a good teacher just like you as well.
Cymbals also sound better and LOUDER when properly played. Playing a cymbal straight on makes it harder and slower to pull the stick off because you're relying on the cymbal to stop your stick. During the instant the stick is on the cymbal it's inhibiting it from vibrating properly.. When the bell is being compressed between the two sides of the mast, it keeps it from vibrating, and stresses it around the hole, which promotes cracks and keyholes. Sweeping through the cymbal also improves your general playing efficiency because you can sweep toward your next hit-you don't have to make an immediate change in the opposite direction to pull your stick off the cymbal, then another change of direction for your next hit. If you feel that your cymbals aren't loud enough for the music or your taste, find bigger cymbals. The rule of thumb is: more bronze equals louder cymbal.
Thank you!
And there are more factors to cymbal volume, like the bell or the lathing. A 26 inch unlathed flat ride won't be louder than a 14 inch natural crash with a fairly big bell.
Excellent topic and delivery. Very worthwhile; thanks for creating/posting.
finally, jerohn has come back to SOULTONE, (Dwayne Johnson Voice)
***** i like that
I'm about to delete every "how to hit your crash, ride, hi-hat etc." video in my playlist and add this one instead! Great video and I like those drum heads as well, people with taste play coated!
My drummer needs to see this
Drummers aren't property
Azora Low he’s a slave to the click
I like that you can see where he hits the snare in the same spot every time. I also like the phrase, "DON'T EAT YOUR CYMBALS!" HAHAHAHA. I also super dig there are ZERO dislikes on this vid ;-)
You rule man ! About to buy my first drum kit (in my 50's) and I can not thank you for the advise...I woulded attack the cymbals precisely the way it should not be ! Many many thanks for making this stupid simple !
Wow! Love those phrasing bro! Drums sounds awesome as well!!👌🏼👍🏼👏🏼
I've been playing for a bit over 10 years and I've only ever cracked an 8" splash, and I've given a china (sabian holy china, which are pretty prone to braking) some small stress fractures around the edge after playing it for 6 years. I've had the same few AAX Xplosion fast crashes for 7 years, and they are super thin too. And I play (mostly) death metal. So, some pretty fast hard hitting stuff.
I cannot comprehend what someone would have to do to break a ride or a pair of hats.
Do you always use the glancing technique or do you sometimes hit straight
@@bassmansour7723 I definitely sometimes hit straight, but I try to avoid it when I can
Much love great advice on the cymbals.....
This vid was definitely for me thank you soultone cymbals
The kit and cymbals have recorded nicely Sir.......greetings from N.E. England.
good advice and a great personality great video man
Never had a problem with either hi hats or rides, but crashes.... I play pop punk stuff and they often keep the beat with the crash and i guess i just hit it wrong since i break one a year, always the one on my right. It always cracks on the edge, I'm going to make them face downwards a bit more and stop hitting straight into them, seems like a good plan.
Amélie Le Roux hit the shoulder (curve) of the cymbal, I play alternative and am a hard hitter, and I recently invested in some A's and K's and wanted to stop cracking the edges of the cymbals. angle them so the shoulder of the the sticks will be hitting the shoulder of the cymbal, and of course a swipe. Then you won't crack your cymbals.
Amélie Le Roux: Matt Halpern was featured in a ‘My Cymbals.Com’ video explaining his swiping technique. I recommend watching it.
I've done it a few times.
Must seem like a Simple Plan
Just bought my first drum set. Glad I watched this 😲
Well explained! Thank you so much.
Love you man great lesson!!
Great explanation of how to actually hit the cymbals 👍🤘🤘🥁
Awesome tips bro .
I love a good drummer just like you jerron Garnett you should do more of symbol pax and you should do more of the building blocks lessons as well and I love it even more.
this video is great thank you!! Great advice
FINALLY!!!! Someone had to say it. Thank You, Jerohn. ~C.STARR
Jerohn.. where have you been man...? building blocks to Gospel chops...? I miss those lessons.. they were such a blessing to me...

this guy should be a teacher at a music school :-)
Non-drummer, but thoroughly enjoyed the video.
this guy is a legend
I love Jerohn! Great guy, great player, great teacher! Soultone...allllllll day!

Thx for shared
I love this guy
shhhh... don't tell them. they'll buy more cymbals.
haha. seriously though. thanks for the tips.
Good video. Does anyone know , is it just personal preference , or does it make a difference to sound if the cymbals are horizontal and fairly low as in this video , or higher up and tilted?
this guy is the best.
Toooop 👍 lembrar-se bateras unidos jamais será vencido!
I like this video and it's so funny HAHAHA. Heavily learned from it!
I'm a drum tech so this helps me a lot.
4:56 "Ya Dig!" I dig it brotha man!
Make sure the cymbal can sway. Give it plenty of free moment. Especially the little splashes!
this guy is HILARIOUS! he was like, "hittin at yo cymbals NAAWWW!"
@JohnnyDavidson you should watch this video for all hard drummers that break cymbals I do that too every 3 months I have cracked my Zildjian cymbals in the past 3-5 months or so I tilt my cymbals not having the stands up instead of hitting on edge of cymbals I hit my cymbals downward with my cymbals tilted down to prevent cracks and dings.
I've only started cracked a hi hat after about 8 years of me n my older cousin(our former drummer who used it for 2 years)playing it @ church n I was only about 10 once I started playing again
Thanks fam
One of my favorite Teachers 👀👍
He's a dope drum player
very helpful..
5:43 omg haha! And again 6:36 lol. This is priceless. I think he's thinking that if you'r breaking your hi-hats cymbals, well... you'r doomed. :D
Long time no see!
drum's are the best :-) .
Long time no see Jerohn. Waddup
What about for riding on the crash? Do you still have to swipe or can you just hit onto it but not so hard?
I don't play drums oh, but I do have a question how do you swipe through the symbol or how do you play through the symbol as opposed to on the symbol?
What are the sizes of the crashes and the ride?
for one while I was hitting my cymbals in a swiping motion but my thing is this, whether you hit the cymbals in a swiping motion or if you lay in to it, they're eventually gonna break
thanks for the keason
This man is good
Bought a really nice (used) looking crash and made two fractures in less than 2 months... Wish I knew this!
Something to be said about stick choice too. I know a couple metal drummers that refuse to use anything but marching sticks -.-
Hey man. I like your video. But you failed to mention some of the most important factors to how a drummer's cymbals should be set up. I want to provide that advice to further help people.
When setting up your cymbals, make sure they are at a good distance. If they're Too close, you're more likely to break them if you apply the same attack you would with them being further. You've got to make sure your strikes are in proportion to their distance. There isn't a one strike fits all. You really have got to play the cymbal. Not just hit it. Really take into consideration these factors.
Depending how you hit the cymbal, you may need to adjust it's angle. If you're only ever striking right through the direct edge of a crash, you're likely to crack the edge. There is a good balance one should have with their strikes. A good proportion of striking through, with a good proportion of striking down. That can easily be achieved with letting the strike go. Let your hit flow naturally. Let the momentum hit, then die down. Go with the flow of the cymbal. A good hit will bounce right back. You shouldn't be driving right through your cymbals. Play with it, not against it.
The most important factor I've learned is the cymbal tension. If you're a heavy hitter and your cymbals are too tight, they will not have the free space to move and release the energy from your hits. This means that the part of the cymbal you're hitting will take far more of the strike than it should. Too much force on any one part of a cymbal can break it. Your cymbal needs to have slack to move and absorb the shock. Let it breathe. Adjust your cymbal tightness in proportion to your hitting. A heavy hitter should have the cymbals a bit looser. It needs wobble space to release the energy transferred from the strike. A light hitter can get away with tighter tension. The tension also plays a big role in your cymbal sound. Too tight chokes the ring. Having it loose will produce a longer, more natural ring. All cymbals are different. It's best to find the sweet spot for each cymbal in particular. Find the tension that allows the cymbals' full voice potential to thrive.
Thanks dude! Writing these key points down
And don't let people who play too hard and don't strike properly get behind your drums. Or you can educate them. Or position the cymbals further down towards the player.
i just need to ask one thing: how do you break a ride cymbal when its not on purpose
how do you think I should get my brother to stop hitting my cymbals exactly how not to hit them and they always get cracks, he gets angry quick so a way to be nice (he is 18.)
More Jerohn please!!
Glancing blow right?
I love u teacher
Ive seen hi hats and rides cracked so bad and was in disbelief how someone can could even possibly hit that hard to crack/destroy a ride or hi hat. I have never cracked any of my cymbals either. Some drummers have heavy hands but cymbals ain’t cheap got to learn how to make your cymbal life last longer
I'll admit it, I've cracked cymbals. This right here would give me great pointers.
that´s true, I recently discover the own cymbal´s sound whith that technique, just sweep
What cymbals is he using? Series and sizes. They sound amazing

4:46? No diggin' into the (drummer left) crash?
Thanks for this tutorial. Very helpful. The devil is always in the details.
4:57 no pun intended
When crashing the ride do you still have to swipe? Or so long as you hit it with your entire stick it's ok?
Yes in general, it also depends on the sound you're trying to get.
Been there done that
I like this guy, you dig?
Also what about metal and pop punk players Aaron Gillespie and dani Washington
Finally broke my hi hat last month , they were 16 years tho
I can tell that cymbal breakers make you angry.
If you're breaking cymbals, you're doing something wrong.
If your breaking sticks (a lot). You're also doing something wrong.
Yeah? Set up some splashes and some with holes.
You did swipe it.
Don't get me wrong, it's an important point there, and it's well explained on this vid, but crashes tend to break because when you ride on them for long periods of time (like for every song in a setlist), correctly hit or not, they will fail at some point. Two years is about the max I could get trying to swoosh them like advertised. But yeah if you play crashes just to highlight here and there 5 years or more is possible I guess. It's a pity this peculiar case has not been discussed here, because many modern rock musics imply riding on crashes. Probably many drummers have never broken any cymbal, but also many are ashamed to tell the truth. It's a social thing, like "my biggest influence is Buddy Rich", "I've never broken any cymbal" and stuff like that. Boo at anyone not saying that
A fact I think was mentioned
If you play rock or metal
Get thicker cymbals
Even with proper technique
A thin cymbal will crack quicker
Plus Thicker cymbals are louder so for rock and metal that’s the best sound!
I owned a Sabian aa 16 inch x-Plosion crash
A thin crash
After 2 years of hitting it hard (I play metal)
It broke
The fact that a thin cymbal could take that much abuse for that long was because of my technique
If you play soft
Thick is not the way to go
You have to hit thicker cymbals harder to get the tone to start.
This technique will save a lot of your cymbals. however, if you don't feel comfortable playing this way, by all means don't. I play my drum set the way I loved to. And the way I feel comfortable. Me personally, I don't care if I break a cymbal. Because I'm going to play the drums the way I want to. This is a really nice technique. But I don't care to play this way. You only live once. Play how you wanna play!!!!!!!!
I have playing since I was four years old and I have never broken a cymbal.
6:16 I'm ded 😂
Pls tell me your grooves

If you can crack a ride or a hihat, it's time to become a construction worker. Breaking concrete with sticks shouldn't be a problem 😅
oh...well thank you
I've broken a hi hat and I don't know how. but it took like 10 years.
