This is the complete opposite of clickbait! This is a man sharing a very wise perspective on what education really is about. I am a high school math and special education teacher and I completely agree when he says "the current education system is a racket". I've literally said those exact same words before. He's 1000% right, all the resources to create value in yourself are available is you believe in life long learning (I did when learned how to DJ and music production from UA-cam videos, and took that same mindset to books and forums about cryptocurrencies, blockchain and financial markets). This man is a role model, I will definitely be sharing this video with my kids at school! Thank you for sharing you wisdom in such an accessible format!
Learning desktop publishing and "how to type in 8th grade" was the one skill that survived me doing multiple occupations throughout my 20yr plus career that requires use of a keyboard. TRUTH. 20 years later came the Internet and that keyboard neeeeeeeeevvvveeeeeer changed.
Roberto is preaching! College is NOT. Neccesity! I personally have learned waaaay more from "UA-cam university" as they call it then college. Teaching myself and learning on my own has given me more confidence in one year then a college degree ever could have. I have been able to prove to myself that "its possible" i just have to go get it. I have always heard ppl say that but it didnt make sense until I actually started doing it. I have grown so much as a women all from teaching myself! Anybody can so it, you just have to be willing to take action and dig deep for the things you need.
Seriously? Where did you get the idea that he is pushing a college education as a necessity? That's not what we heard and saw. He's actually saying the opposite. As in: if you dedicated the same amount of time learning exactly what YOU want and need to learn, you'd be better off than paying for an education that includes things that don't pertain to you. It's about dedicating the learning hours needed in order to achieve your goal - rather than sitting in a classroom. (Maybe we watched and listened to a totally different video than you. Go back and watch it again.)

i learned more from youtube than what i learned in college,. i was deemed a failure because i didn't finish college. today i sometimes make up to a $1k a day ! all the people who said i was a failure are stuck keeping up with the jones and always looking forward to Fridays.

I see we have a difference in the definition of the word broke. However, I believe Roberto has good intentions and maybe to you he was not "broke". But I think he did not have that much money. Great video Roberto. I've been following you for almost 2 years and the information you share really has been life changing. Because of your tips I was able to turn my hobby (making nail videos on UA-cam) into a business. It's by no means easy but it's so fulfilling to be able to work at my own schedule.

Speaking the truth right here. This is why I do side gigs to help supplement my income. Oil changes, PC upgrades or cleaning.... little things to bring in $20 here or $50 there. Just have to find a way.
I make tee shirts for companies , family reunions, funerals, weddings, girl parties, civic groups..do light mechanic work...Decals for cars.... music engineering...
Let me just add that outside of the USA - no other country gives a shit where you got your degree. This is an American only obsession,. A marketing ploy. No such thing as student debt in most countrys. Go abroad for your degree, come home with more experience, more life experience and no debt. Great video Roberto
Sparkingly literate and insightful as usual. Oh, and did I write, easy to listen to? Several things resonated with me that I would like to confirm with your viewers. 1) I do think school is important. If you can finish school you will more often then not collect a bunch of connectors you will do business with for the rest of your life. Go to the best school you can afford. 2) My first job paid me $1.10/hr just for humorous reference. 3) In the 90's I built a multi-million dollar business doing new media and web programming staffed be self-taught programmers. NOT A SINGLE person had a degree in programming. They came from everywhere, Jamaica, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Venezuela, Brazil, Toronto. They were brilliant and no one else would employ them. I landed Daimler as a client and after three years they asked me to come to Germany just to tell me that we were the ONLY outside consultants that were on time and on budget every single job. I told them that was because we were pirates, we believed programming was a creative, fluid effort and we were passionate about programming. If you follow the specifications document 100% the job will always fail. It's a starting point, not the end point. 4) Finally, you didn't mention this but one amazing skill that is very marketable is sales. If you are a true hunter and not a farmer, you can make a good living. Companies are desperate for true sales people. Being a tech nerd AND a fearless salesperson has helped me chart my own life. 100% agree that a skill is way more valuable in today's society. I've seen people with college degrees working at McDonalds (or just completely unemployed) versus someone that is just highly skilled in a specific craft excelling in life.
Oh my gosh. It's so true. I went to school and have a degree. When I went to college we didn't have computers. (yes I realize how "old" this makes me sound...computers were on the verge of becoming almost mainstream). I remember going to the Dean and saying that we really should be learning how to use computers in design because that's the way the field was going. He knew it yet there we were, doing marker renderings and cutting rubylith (old school design hand-work...never touched it outside of college). Ugh...it was so frustrating. ALL I know in regards to technology and programs I taught myself. I learned the basics of design in college which is imperative but that was it. I could have easily taken those same classes and not bothered with the degree and saved myself thousands upon thousands of dollars. I didn't need another English or Math class to be good at design. I just mentioned this in a Quora question I answered the other day, in fact. I always recommend learning in all different facets. But having a college degree is not necessary for all fields and they really should revamp the collegiate system to omit unnecessary course requirements. A nursing student shouldn't have to be required to take an art history class. An art student shouldn't have to take an English class. (assuming those were fulfilled in high school). Feeling hopeless, alone and desperate as well, having an Associate's Degree in Web Technologies (skills Roberto mentioned) and was on the honor roll the whole time. I'm left feeling as you described. The majority of what I've learned has been on my own. College is no longer teaching. They're giving you assignments to go teach yourself while instructors get paid to make you "cram" and forget what you would've otherwise retained. This amounts to wasted time, blood, sweat, tears and money. Now I'm evidently, "overqualified" - on paper and no one is calling me for other jobs. I'm living proof of what Roberto is saying. I will and thank you I am looking into UX design my plan is to keep doing research on what I would like to do and start learning a viable skill so I can use that as a way to provide some value to an organization that will reward me with a viable salary. I am super glad that I watched this video. I would self-study and learn graphic design, photography, illustration, web development, and motion graphics during my time. I would purchase books, save articles, and take notes on Evernote. Honestly, I have learned and developed those skills through discipline, practice, tutorials, and other resources. Currently, I am a graduate student and I'm realizing that my institution has not been a rewarding experience lately. I am unimpressed with my graduate program as it is not providing the necessary resources to advance a student's success. I feel like the university and my graduate program just want a paycheck rather than focusing on the students' success. During my university journey, I have not landed an impressive, secure design job; although I have landed a few jobs in the past. I had to resign or got terminated due to politics or injustice in the workplace. I feel like I am wasting my time, pursuing a valueless degree. You are right about valuing and investing yourself. I feel that self-studying has been extremely rewarding as I have learned a lot about my craft and the industry. Now, I am a freelancer, but unfortunately, I am financially struggling to the point that I am actively searching for a job again. I had terrible experiences with employers that I decided that I wanted to freelance, but I can't seem to get a consistent client following. After watching this video, I've realized that I have to rethink my strategy and approach. The struggle may be real, but my ambition to be a great designer and establish a studio is real. I wish I could of gotten this info about 8 years ago when I first started college. I originally wanted to work for one year out of high school, save up and invest in something that would help me get into a mature enough state to actually apply myself for college so I wouldn't flunk or drop out. Well 5 years later, no degree yet and $48K in debt. Eesh. I'll keep watching you and do as you said, learn some new skills and start working on making myself valuable for people. Always speaking truth Roberto! 🙏🏽 I have spoken at Tech Summits, Conventions with tens of thousands in attendance, and at Universities I can’t afford to graduate from because of my expertise. Students wanted to learn what I knew and professors needed to address the topic to keep their courses relevant in this new media age. I learned these skills from spending hours a day focused on the 1 thing I loved to do until I could be called an expert based on my body of work. I studied everyday and practiced until I perfected my art. I put myself through community college too. My portfolio got me high paying gigs before I even graduated. Now I’m going for the paper just to have it, but you don’t need it to be successful. People value results 💯%!

Here is what I've learned from videos from youtube creators like Roberto. They have taught me. They have taught me how I can go from a cringy youtuber, into someone that people come to for somewhat good content. I've alsolearned that if you can freelance a job that is in demand and you can do that job, then you can make the same income as you would a 8-hour full-time job. I'm about to be a junior in college, and I can already at-test that you will be thinking alot, mostly about what you will be doing as a career path. I see myself working in the computer-field as a residential technician, but I only see myself doing it for 15-20 years. Even when some professors tell me that I'm headed for a New York business. UA-cam can teach things easier than some doctors in college.
Hi, Roberto, I'm new to your channel and just wanted to say thanks for what you're doing and that I'm enjoying this content. I started working as a self-employed professional about a year ago after losing my full-time office job of eight years and I definitely agree with your point about trading time for money. Toward the end, I was killing myself, working 10 and 12 hour days or more (with no overtime pay, of course) for let's just say less than that $160 a day cap you mentioned. It was miserable. In any case, I've almost replaced that full-time job salary in the self-employed space while working perhaps 40 percent fewer hours when you average out the year. I work as a photographer, live sound engineer and occasional graphic designer and I love the gig life. It's tough, certainly, but a company would have to pay me a lot of money to return to the daily employee life.
As a freelancer struggling to make steady income, I absolutely love Roberto's stance on working and being paid for your tasks versus being paid simply for your time (by the task vs. by the hour). Your videos are awesome and so enlightening! Thank you!

Hi Roberto, I attended a well respected Big10 university and graduated with a B.A. in Advertising. It seems to me that humanities degrees make you a Jack of all trades, but the master of nothing. So I completely agree with you that a person should learn a specific skill, photography, web design coding, graphic design, videography, etc, which will generate enough income to allow them to pursue their true passion. Thanks for posting this video, it should help many people realize that just trading time for money won't help them achieve their goals.
I actually love what I do now (teaching). However, you have some good lessons even for people who like what they're doing. We have so much more time than any of us think. Even those "stolen minutes" can be used. When I started teaching, I would always suggest turning off the TV as a way to get free time. Now, I say to put away the smart phone and screen. The people who can do this are the ones who succeed. You have time for personal development and creation rather than just consumption. You had some good reminders about selling yourself (and not selling yourself short) which is an area I'm weak in. You also raised a good point about educational debt. You're right: this is not explained enough. I have the freedom I do, even in a low salary career, because I made some choices and sacrifices to graduate debt free.

There is nothing wrong with selling something just to be clear. I don’t believe in false promises but I don’t think Gurus are lying or misleading people... it’s just not everyone has a teaching style of their life experiences that feels actionable... I’m not a car guy but I am a camera guy and gadget guy. But I also don’t feel the need to “flex” to make a point. When I need to make a point I show the dashboard of one of my sales systems... but that feels awkward for me or like flashing money... but some people don’t take you seriously without some display of “wealth”. As a POC I learned I get better customer service when I wear my Apple Watch or Beats Headphones because it shows I can afford to be there... I imagine some ppl show off their car or house bc they have the experience of ppl not believing that they built a successful business... I can sympathize with that... Because I don’t like fancy clothes... when I speak at an event, until I go on stage ppl think I’m a camera man or attendee or part of the staff... Just giving some perspective. I’m glad you can learn from me... but try see if there is anything to learn from those ppl... they might surprise you... 🙏

Wow...this video manifested itself in such a timely manner. I've been researching what cameras to use to start up my own UA-cam channel for years, but never had the courage nor the finances to get the equipment I wanted. I am finally able to kinda make things work and have developed blind faith in taking risks that I am passionate about. I've seen your videos every once in a while, and then saw this video. Everything you talked about in this video couldn't have addressed everything going on in my life more than it did...literally everything. I would always think about how I get paid $22 to do everything I do in an hour at my job. My job is a high stress job, and yet I only get paid $22 which isn't much when you think about it lol and even though I had thought about this, it didn't hit me as hard as it did until I heard you say it. THEN, I was thinking about going back to school for a degree, even though I was always opposed to getting a degree when all it acts is like a paper stating I am competent. And although I feel education is important, I feel your video was meant to direct me to educating myself in a nonconventional way to get me where I need to be. I am a single mom, living in L.A. and barely getting by. I have tons of talent that comes to life as soon as I learn how to do something. I may not always be passionate about what I learn, via various jobs, but once I do learn, I become one of, if not the best, at what I do. Once I know a job, my mind, my creativity takes over and unleashes new ways of doing things, simplifying things, and expands! Its phenomenal and exciting, and it gets utilized in ways that is not truly serving myself or those who I would want to assist. Thank you so much for your video, Robert. You are totally right about education, degrees and learning skills. For me the struggle hasn’t been getting things done. I know how to sell my ideas, but approaching new possible clients is the most difficult thing i can do. I don’t know how or where to get clients. I still dont have recognition as a designer in the region i live nor online. I’ve worked at graphic design agencies most of my professional career, and i recently (about a year or so) i decided to make my own graphic design business. So yeah... i guess I’m asking for help or a video where you could talk about this. Keep up the good videos man!

Thank you so much for this video man. I like the way you put things into context for those of us who have not had the experience of trial and error to analyze this. Listening now, anyone who has ever played an online rpg where doing things like quests would usually reward us with just enough to get by, but farming for certain high value items and then selling them would net you wayyy more in the end. The higher of a level you were (this could translate to more experience and proficiency), the faster you could usually farm certain items or tasks. Anyone who has ever played guild wars 1 knows. You could farm for ectos and then sell them for outrageous amounts of money, or sell runs to certain outposts for a flat rate. You may have taken 20 minutes to do a whole run but after doing 100 runs you now do it in 10 minutes. I especially like how you outlined the fact that hourly wage devalues you. It devalues your time and it devalues your efficiency to complete the job. You do not get paid more for that day if you worked harder lol.. maybe do it consistently like that every day for 6 months then we'll see..? WHAT! Meanwhile Todd in his underwear made your week salary in a day because he knew how to use adobe premiere.. This video is GOLD. Thank you.

Hi Roberto this video is the best yet!! I would have also add that althoug I am finishing college ,the term college degree is just a 10% now a days ,its just old information and doesn’t work ,I am a year away from finishing and in the past some professors showed that the past a college degree was usefull but they have turned a degree through marketing habits and gotten people with student loans , but in the present millions of people have it sou the generation “millenials” like us get ripped off because now a days employers dont care! I learned that the hard way :) .So what i did was just use online free stuff for developing skills, music production,Photography,Video editing(im starting on video edit),online websites,fixing electronic(basics of fixing)everything and it’s helpful by a bunch. So i agree college is worthless nowadays . Its like you said you are not someone that does epic things on video and Peter mackinon even said that everything thats free as in a tutorial its for you to learn and develop skills and he is proud that people learn his tutorials,I’ve learned a lot from you too ;) but it’s true that in college finding time for this aint easy ,but through tutorials I’ve im in the process of becoming an all around skills developer and probably gonna make a videos making a shoutout to all the youtubers I’ve learned a lot from tutorials!! I’m so glad you put this video out. Many people go about college with these expectations that a degree will automatically guarantee them better jobs, and it only further disadvantages the poor. If you want to really experience unlimited earning potential, you MUST concentrate on 1. what skills do I have and 2. How can I monetize that skill? And then do the research and take action! They go hand in hand. Learn what to do, whatever that is, and then do it. Simple 👌🏾

Now THIS is the kind of video I really appreciate Roberto. Thank you for clarifying this trading skill for money instead of the time for money idea which equates to slavery. At the age of 45, you have certainly taught me something of great value. As in South Africa most of us were brought up to get an education to get a low paying job so you can just put food on the table so you can go for the next day of slavery again. And the cycle just continues from there.
Thanks for this video! I learned something different. I’ve known about offering a task for money, such as, in my case, drawing a portrait for someone for a certain amount. I’ve also previously bought into going to school [for animation] and earning that BFA, hoping it would get me in the door of my “dream job”, as I perceived. But I never thought about how one could use skills efficiency in a way that can earn you more money. After graduating with a huge amount of debt, a weak portfolio (seriously worried about why they graduated me... but I realize, it’s just a business), and barely enough skill to even convince MYSELF that I’m an animator, I realized something. I was betting on the wrong things for success. I was essentially sold a dream and I thought the (expensive) ride was automatic. I never properly considered that there was a chance an art company would decline me me (you’d think after all this effort and money I put in, employment would be automatic but hey. Live and learn?) And I did not think about how I’d actually go about making money, nor did i consider that working for others for chump change is NOT the only option. Life after college taught me some hard lessons, and I’m just now coming out of the shock and disappointment I’m dealing with. Largely due to naivety and stubbornness. Time to learn some new skills. And thank you, Mr Blake, for reminding me to look again at my skill set, and this time, to consider investing my time to learn something that will make me valuable for my sake, and make sense out of what it means to be productive and EFFICIENT. (And in time, more confident.) I’m currently trying to get interested in other aspects of art, and look into technology. Things like that. My stubbornness has always been a problem, haha. The tone and style of this video was really different to your usual videos and it ALMOST felt like the other "gurus" I've seen who's made 20+ minute pitch videos where they explain the "struggles" they had, and the "secret formula they discovered that no one else will teach you" only to be told to go to this website and sign up for this course... But knowing you for as long as I've known your content now and all the value and knowledge you've shared, I had a feeling this wouldn't be like that, and indeed it wasn't. It was STYLED that way, but I think styling it that way, and then just putting it how it is, not selling anything and just providing your story and ideas for free, opened the door to the relationship that in time, earns you that more commercial relationship. That's why you can sell your starter kids and courses and such, because you've already provided so much value for free, that I consider the paid elements an extra addition to take things to the next level. You've always been about opening the door to knowledge and sharing tips and advice. And through the year/s (I can't remember exactly when I discovered you, but I've been doing youtube for 3 years now and I think I found you a year in) you've showed everyone HOW you make your money, but suggesting others do exactly what you've been doing, which is what you shared in this video. I remember Tai Lopez and Alex Becker doing similar videos like this, and they didn't have any sales pitch at the end of their videos either, the videos that were the gateway were basically the introduction to their channel. The introduction to their personality, a journey, and through that personality and journey are opportunities to go more in depth with coaching and selling products, but the doorway itself was open and free to enter. And that's why I've followed all of them and you. Just thought I'd share that. It's been a cool journey to watch, and cool to see how your Instagram, Twitter and UA-cam all interconnect with one another (I never really got into Linkedin myself) And your story reminds me of some of my struggles too. We're the same age as well with similar tech interests so that's also probably why I've been so interested all this time :)

This is sage advice, and I grew up in the same time that you did (I'm a bit younger than you) - so hearing about pre-Google era, Yahoo, Tripod, Geocities, AND the fact that you also did HTML, CSS, Javascript and had to help your peers in class... that's awesome and relatable. Very well put. This is something I preach often. I'm 28 years self employed with about a year and a half of community college. As a self employed "entrepreneur" I've been blessed to have had more success in business than any of my friends whom I graduated high school with that went on to major universities. I have several other self employed friends (also self taught) who have been equally or more successful than myself. I do generally recommend that people get at least an associates degree though because I know that most won't take the path less traveled.
Roberto.. this hit my feed for a reason... As a 21 year retired veteran from the army... And just turning 46 a week ago.. I've had 2 jobs.. truck driver for 3 years which took time away from home.. and now manufacturering 12 hours a day... Which also takes time away from home.. I recently had the thought that I need to find a way, to do something that makes better use of my precious time and allows me to care for self, family and needs... To acquire a skill.. but what skill could I pick up that could make this work? Then I hit your video that I am thankful you took the time to make! Very inspirational and motivating.. insta Sub... I go to college but I don't follow the curriculum. I'm not looking to graduate and that pisses off family yet, I'm not searching to work for someone else . I'm working towards grabbing skills in areas that interest me.
I'm broke because the last 2 jobs i had were abusive and not for me, I was under payed and treat terribly. My skills are in music production, video making and photography
You're right on the mark with the education system stretching things out. I'm home schooling my step kids in English as a second language when they're here. In the Summer I do more of an intensive for a week or two. With me, they have learnt much more since we started than they learnt in a few years at school. Their English level is above average now. School taught me some things, but most of my skills I learnt outside of school, on my own, by doing, researching and trying things out.
DarthShadie wow! That's pretty great that you took that route especially for your kids and you've seen the results of taking an alternative path to traditional education. There's tons of tools out there that help in pretty much any area of learning.
Robert Bradford Exactly. We do send the kids yo school, but we complete their learning where and when the school is lacking the resources to teach them. If it were up to just us, we would home school them permanently until high school, but their mother doesn't agree. Once I have my own with my husband, we're going to home school a lot more. In my family, we have learning disabilities and most of what we all learnt was outside of school anyway. Besides, doing math or verbs while tossing a soccer ball around is much more fun than sitting at a desk. 😉
This mathematical breakdown of my time is reason I started my channel this year. I found that after work, my commute, meals and sleeping I had only 34% of my life available for my family and me. I am in the beginning stages of changing the formula to get closer to 50% now. I hope this message resonates with as many people as possible. Change the equation. Make more time. This is the complete opposite of clickbait! This is a man sharing a very wise perspective on what education really is about. I am a high school math and special education teacher and I completely agree when he says "the current education system is a racket". I've literally said those exact same words before. He's 1000% right, all the resources to create value in yourself are available is you believe in life long learning (I did when learned how to DJ and music production from UA-cam videos, and took that same mindset to books and forums about cryptocurrencies, blockchain and financial markets). This man is a role model, I will definitely be sharing this video with my kids at school! Thank you for sharing you wisdom in such an accessible format!

Teaching myself and learning on my own has given me more confidence in one year then a college degree ever could have. I have grown so much as a women all from teaching myself! Anybody can so it, you just have to be willing to take action and dig deep for the things you need.

As in: if you dedicated the same amount of time learning exactly what YOU want and need to learn, you'd be better off than paying for an education that includes things that don't pertain to you. Sparkingly literate and insightful as usual. Oh, and did I write, easy to listen to? Several things resonated with me that I would like to confirm with your viewers. 1) I do think school is important. If you can finish school you will more often then not collect a bunch of connectors you will do business with for the rest of your life. Go to the best school you can afford. 2) My first job paid me $1.10/hr just for humorous reference. 3) In the 90's I built a multi-million dollar business doing new media and web programming staffed be self-taught programmers. NOT A SINGLE person had a degree in programming. They came from everywhere, Jamaica, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Venezuela, Brazil, Toronto. They were brilliant and no one else would employ them. I landed Daimler as a client and after three years they asked me to come to Germany just to tell me that we were the ONLY outside consultants that were on time and on budget every single job. I told them that was because we were pirates, we believed programming was a creative, fluid effort and we were passionate about programming. If you follow the specifications document 100% the job will always fail. It's a starting point, not the end point. 4) Finally, you didn't mention this but one amazing skill that is very marketable is sales. If you are a true hunter and not a farmer, you can make a good living. Companies are desperate for true sales people. Being a tech nerd AND a fearless salesperson has helped me chart my own life. Keep up the good work.

100% agree that a skill is way more valuable in today's society. I've seen people with college degrees working at McDonalds (or just completely unemployed) versus someone that is just highly skilled in a specific craft excelling in life.
Oh my gosh. It's so true. I went to school and have a degree. When I went to college we didn't have computers. (yes I realize how "old" this makes me sound...computers were on the verge of becoming almost mainstream). I remember going to the Dean and saying that we really should be learning how to use computers in design because that's the way the field was going. He knew it yet there we were, doing marker renderings and cutting rubylith (old school design hand-work...never touched it outside of college). Ugh...it was so frustrating. ALL I know in regards to technology and programs I taught myself. I learned the basics of design in college which is imperative but that was it. I could have easily taken those same classes and not bothered with the degree and saved myself thousands upon thousands of dollars. I didn't need another English or Math class to be good at design. I just mentioned this in a Quora question I answered the other day, in fact. I always recommend learning in all different facets. But having a college degree is not necessary for all fields and they really should revamp the collegiate system to omit unnecessary course requirements. A nursing student shouldn't have to be required to take an art history class. An art student shouldn't have to take an English class. (assuming those were fulfilled in high school). I have sat around for 4 months wondering what the hell I was going to do to get on my feet. I have been depressed and have had serious anxiety during this time period. this video has shown me what I need to do and precisely how to do it. Feeling hopeless, alone and desperate as well, having an Associate's Degree in Web Technologies (skills Roberto mentioned) and was on the honor roll the whole time. I'm left feeling as you described. The majority of what I've learned has been on my own. College is no longer teaching. They're giving you assignments to go teach yourself while instructors get paid to make you "cram" and forget what you would've otherwise retained. This amounts to wasted time, blood, sweat, tears and money. Now I'm evidently, "overqualified" - on paper and no one is calling me for other jobs. I'm living proof of what Roberto is saying. Entrepreneurship is likely the key. Wishing you the best!
I will and thank you I am looking into UX design my plan is to keep doing research on what I would like to do and start learning a viable skill so I can use that as a way to provide some value to an organization that will reward me with a viable salary. I am super glad that I watched this video. I would self-study and learn graphic design, photography, illustration, web development, and motion graphics during my time. I would purchase books, save articles, and take notes on Evernote. Honestly, I have learned and developed those skills through discipline, practice, tutorials, and other resources. Currently, I am a graduate student and I'm realizing that my institution has not been a rewarding experience lately. I am unimpressed with my graduate program as it is not providing the necessary resources to advance a student's success. I feel like the university and my graduate program just want a paycheck rather than focusing on the students' success. During my university journey, I have not landed an impressive, secure design job; although I have landed a few jobs in the past. I had to resign or got terminated due to politics or injustice in the workplace.
I feel like I am wasting my time, pursuing a valueless degree. You are right about valuing and investing yourself. I feel that self-studying has been extremely rewarding as I have learned a lot about my craft and the industry. Now, I am a freelancer, but unfortunately, I am financially struggling to the point that I am actively searching for a job again. I had terrible experiences with employers that I decided that I wanted to freelance, but I can't seem to get a consistent client following. After watching this video, I've realized that I have to rethink my strategy and approach. The struggle may be real, but my ambition to be a great designer and establish a studio is real. That's my dream.

I originally wanted to work for one year out of high school, save up and invest in something that would help me get into a mature enough state to actually apply myself for college so I wouldn't flunk or drop out. Always speaking truth Roberto! 🙏🏽 I have spoken at Tech Summits, Conventions with tens of thousands in attendance, and at Universities I can’t afford to graduate from because of my expertise. Students wanted to learn what I knew and professors needed to address the topic to keep their courses relevant in this new media age. I learned these skills from spending hours a day focused on the 1 thing I loved to do until I could be called an expert based on my body of work. I studied everyday and practiced until I perfected my art. I put myself through community college too. My portfolio got me high paying gigs before I even graduated. Now I’m going for the paper just to have it, but you don’t need it to be successful. People value results 💯%!

Here is what I've learned from videos from youtube creators like Roberto. They have taught me. They have taught me how I can go from a cringy youtuber, into someone that people come to for somewhat good content. I've alsolearned that if you can freelance a job that is in demand and you can do that job, then you can make the same income as you would a 8-hour full-time job.
I'm about to be a junior in college, and I can already at-test that you will be thinking alot, mostly about what you will be doing as a career path. I see myself working in the computer-field as a residential technician, but I only see myself doing it for 15-20 years. Even when some professors tell me that I'm headed for a New York business.

Hi, Roberto, I'm new to your channel and just wanted to say thanks for what you're doing and that I'm enjoying this content.
I started working as a self-employed professional about a year ago after losing my full-time office job of eight years and I definitely agree with your point about trading time for money. Toward the end, I was killing myself, working 10 and 12 hour days or more (with no overtime pay, of course) for let's just say less than that $160 a day cap you mentioned. It was miserable. In any case, I've almost replaced that full-time job salary in the self-employed space while working perhaps 40 percent fewer hours when you average out the year. I work as a photographer, live sound engineer and occasional graphic designer and I love the gig life. It's tough, certainly, but a company would have to pay me a lot of money to return to the daily employee life.

Hi Roberto, I attended a well respected Big10 university and graduated with a B.A. in Advertising. It seems to me that humanities degrees make you a Jack of all trades, but the master of nothing. So I completely agree with you that a person should learn a specific skill, photography, web design coding, graphic design, videography, etc, which will generate enough income to allow them to pursue their true passion. Thanks for posting this video, it should help many people realize that just trading time for money won't help them achieve their goals.
I actually love what I do now (teaching). However, you have some good lessons even for people who like what they're doing. We have so much more time than any of us think. Even those "stolen minutes" can be used. When I started teaching, I would always suggest turning off the TV as a way to get free time. Now, I say to put away the smart phone and screen. The people who can do this are the ones who succeed. You have time for personal development and creation rather than just consumption.
You had some good reminders about selling yourself (and not selling yourself short) which is an area I'm weak in. You also raised a good point about educational debt. You're right: this is not explained enough. I have the freedom I do, even in a low salary career, because I made some choices and sacrifices to graduate debt free.

There is nothing wrong with selling something just to be clear. I don’t believe in false promises but I don’t think Gurus are lying or misleading people... it’s just not everyone has a teaching style of their life experiences that feels actionable...
I’m not a car guy but I am a camera guy and gadget guy. But I also don’t feel the need to “flex” to make a point.
When I need to make a point I show the dashboard of one of my sales systems... but that feels awkward for me or like flashing money... but some people don’t take you seriously without some display of “wealth”.
As a POC I learned I get better customer service when I wear my Apple Watch or Beats Headphones because it shows I can afford to be there...
I imagine some ppl show off their car or house bc they have the experience of ppl not believing that they built a successful business...
I can sympathize with that...
Because I don’t like fancy clothes... when I speak at an event, until I go on stage ppl think I’m a camera man or attendee or part of the staff...

Wow...this video manifested itself in such a timely manner. I've been researching what cameras to use to start up my own UA-cam channel for years, but never had the courage nor the finances to get the equipment I wanted. I am finally able to kinda make things work and have developed blind faith in taking risks that I am passionate about. I've seen your videos every once in a while, and then saw this video. Everything you talked about in this video couldn't have addressed everything going on in my life more than it did...literally everything. I would always think about how I get paid $22 to do everything I do in an hour at my job. My job is a high stress job, and yet I only get paid $22 which isn't much when you think about it lol and even though I had thought about this, it didn't hit me as hard as it did until I heard you say it. THEN, I was thinking about going back to school for a degree, even though I was always opposed to getting a degree when all it acts is like a paper stating I am competent. And although I feel education is important, I feel your video was meant to direct me to educating myself in a nonconventional way to get me where I need to be. I am a single mom, living in L.A. and barely getting by. I have tons of talent that comes to life as soon as I learn how to do something. I may not always be passionate about what I learn, via various jobs, but once I do learn, I become one of, if not the best, at what I do. Once I know a job, my mind, my creativity takes over and unleashes new ways of doing things, simplifying things, and expands! Its phenomenal and exciting, and it gets utilized in ways that is not truly serving myself or those who I would want to assist. Thank you so much for your video, Robert. I really want to take off in the right direction, and I feel your video helped me tremendously in that regard. Keep up this kind of content. Hopefully we can talk and grow individually and together. You are totally right about education, degrees and learning skills. For me the struggle hasn’t been getting things done. I know how to sell my ideas, but approaching new possible clients is the most difficult thing i can do. I don’t know how or where to get clients. I still dont have recognition as a designer in the region i live nor online. I’ve worked at graphic design agencies most of my professional career, and i recently (about a year or so) i decided to make my own graphic design business. So yeah... i guess I’m asking for help or a video where you could talk about this. Keep up the good videos man!

Thank you so much for this video man. I like the way you put things into context for those of us who have not had the experience of trial and error to analyze this. Listening now, anyone who has ever played an online rpg where doing things like quests would usually reward us with just enough to get by, but farming for certain high value items and then selling them would net you wayyy more in the end. The higher of a level you were (this could translate to more experience and proficiency), the faster you could usually farm certain items or tasks. Anyone who has ever played guild wars 1 knows. You could farm for ectos and then sell them for outrageous amounts of money, or sell runs to certain outposts for a flat rate. You may have taken 20 minutes to do a whole run but after doing 100 runs you now do it in 10 minutes.
I especially like how you outlined the fact that hourly wage devalues you. It devalues your time and it devalues your efficiency to complete the job. You do not get paid more for that day if you worked harder lol.. maybe do it consistently like that every day for 6 months then we'll see..? WHAT! Meanwhile Todd in his underwear made your week salary in a day because he knew how to use adobe premiere..

Hi Roberto this video is the best yet!! I would have also add that althoug I am finishing college ,the term college degree is just a 10% now a days ,its just old information and doesn’t work ,I am a year away from finishing and in the past some professors showed that the past a college degree was usefull but they have turned a degree through marketing habits and gotten people with student loans , but in the present millions of people have it sou the generation “millenials” like us get ripped off because now a days employers dont care! I learned that the hard way :) .So what i did was just use online free stuff for developing skills, music production,Photography,Video editing(im starting on video edit),online websites,fixing electronic(basics of fixing)everything and it’s helpful by a bunch. So i agree college is worthless nowadays . Its like you said you are not someone that does epic things on video and Peter mackinon even said that everything thats free as in a tutorial its for you to learn and develop skills and he is proud that people learn his tutorials,I’ve learned a lot from you too ;) but it’s true that in college finding time for this aint easy ,but through tutorials I’ve im in the process of becoming an all around skills developer and probably gonna make a videos making a shoutout to all the youtubers I’ve learned a lot from tutorials!! I’m so glad you put this video out. Many people go about college with these expectations that a degree will automatically guarantee them better jobs, and it only further disadvantages the poor. If you want to really experience unlimited earning potential, you MUST concentrate on 1. what skills do I have and 2. How can I monetize that skill?
And then do the research and take action! They go hand in hand. Learn what to do, whatever that is, and then do it. Simple 👌🏾

At the age of 45, you have certainly taught me something of great value.
As in South Africa most of us were brought up to get an education to get a low paying job so you can just put food on the table so you can go for the next day of slavery again.

Thanks for this video! I learned something different. I’ve known about offering a task for money, such as, in my case, drawing a portrait for someone for a certain amount. I’ve also previously bought into going to school [for animation] and earning that BFA, hoping it would get me in the door of my “dream job”, as I perceived. But I never thought about how one could use skills efficiency in a way that can earn you more money.
After graduating with a huge amount of debt, a weak portfolio (seriously worried about why they graduated me... but I realize, it’s just a business), and barely enough skill to even convince MYSELF that I’m an animator, I realized something. I was betting on the wrong things for success. I was essentially sold a dream and I thought the (expensive) ride was automatic.
I never properly considered that there was a chance an art company would decline me me (you’d think after all this effort and money I put in, employment would be automatic but hey. Live and learn?) And I did not think about how I’d actually go about making money, nor did i consider that working for others for chump change is NOT the only option. Life after college taught me some hard lessons, and I’m just now coming out of the shock and disappointment I’m dealing with. Largely due to naivety and stubbornness.
Time to learn some new skills. And thank you, Mr Blake, for reminding me to look again at my skill set, and this time, to consider investing my time to learn something that will make me valuable for my sake, and make sense out of what it means to be productive and EFFICIENT. (And in time, more confident.)
I’m currently trying to get interested in other aspects of art, and look into technology. Things like that. My stubbornness has always been a problem, haha. But it’s time to turn growth and time into money.
ANYWAY, THANK YOU ROBERTO BLAKE! You’ve inspired me.
The tone and style of this video was really different to your usual videos and it ALMOST felt like the other "gurus" I've seen who's made 20+ minute pitch videos where they explain the "struggles" they had, and the "secret formula they discovered that no one else will teach you" only to be told to go to this website and sign up for this course...
But knowing you for as long as I've known your content now and all the value and knowledge you've shared, I had a feeling this wouldn't be like that, and indeed it wasn't. It was STYLED that way, but I think styling it that way, and then just putting it how it is, not selling anything and just providing your story and ideas for free, opened the door to the relationship that in time, earns you that more commercial relationship. That's why you can sell your starter kids and courses and such, because you've already provided so much value for free, that I consider the paid elements an extra addition to take things to the next level.
You've always been about opening the door to knowledge and sharing tips and advice. And through the year/s (I can't remember exactly when I discovered you, but I've been doing youtube for 3 years now and I think I found you a year in) you've showed everyone HOW you make your money, but suggesting others do exactly what you've been doing, which is what you shared in this video.
I remember Tai Lopez and Alex Becker doing similar videos like this, and they didn't have any sales pitch at the end of their videos either, the videos that were the gateway were basically the introduction to their channel. The introduction to their personality, a journey, and through that personality and journey are opportunities to go more in depth with coaching and selling products, but the doorway itself was open and free to enter. And that's why I've followed all of them and you.
Just thought I'd share that. It's been a cool journey to watch, and cool to see how your Instagram, Twitter and UA-cam all interconnect with one another (I never really got into Linkedin myself) And your story reminds me of some of my struggles too. We're the same age as well with similar tech interests so that's also probably why I've been so interested all this time :)

This is sage advice, and I grew up in the same time that you did (I'm a bit younger than you) - so hearing about pre-Google era, Yahoo, Tripod, Geocities, AND the fact that you also did HTML, CSS, Javascript and had to help your peers in class... that's awesome and relatable. I went through that too, so it's nice to see that cool background. I'm happy you're doing wonderful things, and I'm working myself on chasing financial freedom. Very well put. This is something I preach often. I'm 28 years self employed with about a year and a half of community college. As a self employed "entrepreneur" I've been blessed to have had more success in business than any of my friends whom I graduated high school with that went on to major universities. I have several other self employed friends (also self taught) who have been equally or more successful than myself. I do generally recommend that people get at least an associates degree though because I know that most won't take the path less traveled.

Roberto.. this hit my feed for a reason... As a 21 year retired veteran from the army... And just turning 46 a week ago.. I've had 2 jobs.. truck driver for 3 years which took time away from home.. and now manufacturering 12 hours a day... Which also takes time away from home.. I recently had the thought that I need to find a way, to do something that makes better use of my precious time and allows me to care for self, family and needs... To acquire a skill.. but what skill could I pick up that could make this work? Then I hit your video that I am thankful you took the time to make! Very inspirational and motivating.. insta Sub... You're right on the mark with the education system stretching things out. I'm home schooling my step kids in English as a second language when they're here. In the Summer I do more of an intensive for a week or two. With me, they have learnt much more since we started than they learnt in a few years at school. Their English level is above average now. School taught me some things, but most of my skills I learnt outside of school, on my own, by doing, researching and trying things out.
DarthShadie wow! That's pretty great that you took that route especially for your kids and you've seen the results of taking an alternative path to traditional education. There's tons of tools out there that help in pretty much any area of learning.
Robert Bradford Exactly. We do send the kids yo school, but we complete their learning where and when the school is lacking the resources to teach them. If it were up to just us, we would home school them permanently until high school, but their mother doesn't agree. Once I have my own with my husband, we're going to home school a lot more. In my family, we have learning disabilities and most of what we all learnt was outside of school anyway. Besides, doing math or verbs while tossing a soccer ball around is much more fun than sitting at a desk. 😉

This mathematical breakdown of my time is reason I started my channel this year. I found that after work, my commute, meals and sleeping I had only 34% of my life available for my family and me. I am in the beginning stages of changing the formula to get closer to 50% now. I hope this message resonates with as many people as possible. Change the equation. Make more time.
