Originally started by the Inman family, then Gass. In the Gass family that once ran that store, Jerome Gass lost his daughter and wife in the great New Market train wreck.
He heard the news via telegram and raced the 14 miles on horse and buggy.
Upon arriving at the scene, he looked for his wife. She could only be identified by her wedding band.
Jerome died later in the same building there in Dandridge.
His family ran it for many years afterwards.

John, that pole thing with another piece of wood on the end, the one you called a "dasher", is more likely what would be used as a beater on the heel end of an axe ...when you're hand splitting wood and the axe gets stuck mid way. You can't get into the piece of wood any further, so you have to beat it through, ... otherwise you'll never get your axe out.

My wife and I made a trip to Dandridge in the early 90s to visit the Hearthstone Log Home Company. We were researching log home companies in advance of building our log home. After much looking and question asking we finally decided on Hearthstone so I feel a definite tie to Dandridge. We never returned to Dandridge so it was a treat to see your video.

This is great. If you’re like me, and can work remotely from anywhere. Towns like these would be the perfect place for you. Forget the big cities like NYC, LA, SF, Chicago, and Austin.
I moved from New York, to a tiny town in South Dakota, and ride my horse everywhere. I haven’t been in a car for six weeks, let alone drove one. 🤷‍♂️ 😅

I feel like I just went shopping! Donna is quite a gem, as far as employees go and I hope she's appreciated! It's hard to find people who care so much about the place they work now. Anyway, this was awesome and I'm enjoying your showing these small towns! I will definitely come through Dandridge the next time we take a long weekend!

The wooden long handled tool you showed is a maul and likely would have had many uses such as driving fence posts and stakes. Think of it as a primitive sledge hammer of sorts.

The item at the 30 minute mark is a maul. It was used for splitting wood. You used it to drive a wooden or metal wedge.

The wooden thing that you didn't know what was is a primitive wood splitting maul. They were used as a large hammer to beat a splitting wedge through the wood. You could split 50 cords of firewood and never mushroom a wedge head. I have used one. They are cheap and last a lot longer than the user will.

I read some time ago that the main entrance was upstairs for a reason if it was winter, raining they go up the stairs to go inside to nit track all the sluggish that then was dirt roads, and that it helped not let the main heat out that accumaltes on the bottom rising up, if this is true I don't know but I read it in several things over the years thought I would add that in there cause I too always wondering that myself. Oh another reason was the family would be on the main floor a lot so any events meets or important people coming to the house would also go to the upstairs where they usually had the living rooms. Again I only read this stuff if any truth to it I don't know but does make sence

Actually, the folks who bought that, have made more strides in the community than the locals have.
They remodeled the market you see in the video and also another historic building in town.
