your reviews are great and helped me tremendously. Very clear and concise. Once you've gone through a few reviews and write-up on the Internet (excuse the pun but) it all starts to become a total blur. You can end up knowing less than when you started and it's not helped by those people who find fault in absolutely everything and put you off one camera after another. These are fabulous reviews mate. I love people who show you stuff 'hands on'. Some of what I've read might as well be in Chinese. Many thanks.
Just a few minor corrections incase people get misled; the D7000 did have bracketing (3 shots), interval timer shooting, the power switch illumination toggle and not all Nikon cameras have body focusing motors and therefore no on body MF/AF switches, the only DX bodies to have this are or were the D7000/7100 and the D100/200/300(s) you don't have to press down both mode & drive dial locks to adjust the settings you press one lock for the individual adjustment. I'm sure these slips were just momentary off the cuff mistakes(we all have them). Apart from sound quality, great video!
FYI : D7100 natively shoots 6fps and shoots 7fps in crop mode Another thing, it doesn't shoot 60p at 1080p, it shoots 60i, there is a huge difference in the quality of interlaced and progressive footage. And third 3-D tracking can be demonstrated by taking multiple shots on continous AF-C on a moving subject, not by taking pathetic street shots in single AF-S mode.
Well I got the Nikon d 7100. Also picked up the vertical grip for it. Watched a lot of videos before spending the money. It is a great set up. Having lots of fun and getting great pictures. Looking forward to using it more. Had a Nikon d100 for 11 years and gave it to my daughter to take pictures of the grandkids. It has been a great camera. I hope to have the same experience with this D7100
I was using the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8. I recommend this lens for general photography. Unless you want primes then I recommend the 85mm 1.4G, 50mm 1.4G and 24mm 1.4G.
I just ordered this to replace my old D90 I really wanted to go full frame with the 610 but can't afford it at the moment, this video review just made me feel ten times more satisfied with my purchase than I already was.
You need to turn auto focus, and face detection off. Switch to video mode on the back and go into live view. Hold the button on the front left side of the camera (below the sync ports by lens mount) and push it in, then turn the dial. it must be in auto mode right now, turn auto exposure off as well.
I would love to take my D7100 to New York. I am tired of the Pacific Northwest but with the weather here I get a huge softbox for like 300 days a year.
I bought the Tamron 70-300mm VC lens after watching your review on it. Looks like I'll be doing the same with this camera as soon as funds allow. I like the way you just concentrate on the camera review without any clowning around.
Ok I have had this camera for just a little over a year and I completely LOVE this piece of equipment. My problem, I'm having difficulties shooting family members during basketball games and wrestling matches. I'm having lots of noise creep into the image. Suggestions???
I would use the full frame lenses 14-24mm (21mm-36mm equivalent) the 24-70mm (36mm-105mm equivalent) & the 70-200mm (105mm-300mm equivalent). This gives you a 21-300mm range. Its perfect, tack sharp glass.
Thanks again for the detailed response. I appreciate it. I changed settings as instructed. Rear dial in video mode. Live view button pressed and LV enabled. Changed focus mode 2 spot focus (pressing the button in the AF-M and then turning the front dial). Also changed focusing to Single Point so once focus locks it shouldn't focus again until I press the shutter button again. Did I miss anything? Also my camera is always in 'M' manual mode, so exposure shouldn't change. Still having issues :(
its because the screen compresses them to make room for the exif info. Here is the fix. Go to my menu, below the wrench. then go to add item. Then go to "review display" then go back to my menu and click on that option and click a check mark next to "image (without info) and then exit. Take a picture, then press the D-Pad up, now your image review is tack sharp and in full screen!
Yes, if you are shooting JPEG it will shoot 6fps in DX, or 7fps in 1.3 crop mode. It will also do that in RAW if you change it to 12-bit RAW mode. If you switch it back to 14-bit RAW it will only shoot in 5fps in DX, or 6fps in 1.3 crop mode.
I've had my D300 since the day they came out. It is time to relegate it to my back-up camera. I ordered the D7100 today, and looking forward to shooting with it a LOT this weekend
Thanks for a nice review which has all the necessary facts and not only marketing. Myself I have a D7100 and a AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR combined to a AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III. This is an amazing package. Like you say in your review at 3:25 the benefits of FX lenses on this camera should be acknowledged. 24mp and no lowpass filter gives professional quality shots with a FX lens. For wide pics u might need a pair of DX lenses though.
Great review... I just recently got the D7000 adding it to my collection with the D3200, and D40. I'm looking for a good portrait prime lens at a budget price been looking at the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 what's your take on that lens, I'm also open to other suggestions also.
Switch to JPEG or to RAW 12-bit instead of 14-bit. When you hit Info it will indicate 7fps on the LCD. In my testing at 1/800th I was able to shoot anywhere from 99 to 102 JPEG shots in 13 to 15 seconds before the buffer filled. When I did the math the average of all my tests actually ran a tiny bit slightly more than 7fps. I had the same results with 12-bit compressed RAW, but it obviously filled the buffer faster. Using fast SD cards had better results than cheap cards so the card matters too.
On the eye sight of the camera, How do you call that thing? eye expander? How much does it cost you? made for D7100 only? please let me know bro, I want to get that! thanks!
Hmmm I used this camera the whole weekend primarily for video. I noticed that even after acquiring focus, the camera would start to re-focus again. This was a huge annoyance and shows up in my videos. Despite the fact that the subject was not moving at all, the camera would still adjust focus. Have you experienced the same issue?
Hi Corey, need a suggestion i just upgraded to the D7100 and have a 18-200 and 35... I travel a lot and struggle with low light on the 18-200 (had a D60 for a while so D7100 should help..?) and swapping to 35 or carrying 2 lenses is a big challenge... is there a lens that can benefits of both lenses...?
The issue is not re-focusing. The issue is that it always has to re-focus. I could be recording a person sitting still on a chair and even though the person is in focus, the camera has to re-focus every few moments. I do read the manual for all my cameras (it's the first thing I do) D80, D300, D300s, D700, D7100. I have a lot of experience with the Nikon line...all I want to do is to be able to focus on a single spot and then not have the camera try to re-focus on its own.
Curious about your harness. I don't see a "Sport" double on the website. What is is that you are wearing? Where can I get it? Good review by the way. I have been shooting with a D70s since 2006. I love it, but will upgrade to the D7100 which will perhaps be my last camera. Thanks Corey.
What's better; buying a d7100 now and a pro lens like 24-70 2.8ed next year or save more money for a d610 now and buy a less expensive lens next year or so?

does it come with that extended eye viewfinder thing, because i hear that it is difficult to access controls when your looking into the viewfinder about to take a pic
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it helped me decide on my next camera body. However, I would like to make a tiny suggestion... if you're going to shoot your reviews on the streets, then don't add any background music to your finished videos because it makes it difficult to hear your commentary, which is the purpose of watching a review. P.S... I really like your hair :-).
How can the D7100 not be as sharp as the D800E if the D7100 has a higher pixel density? Could it be that the extra pixel density is exposing limitations in the lens?
Wow! A camera review with nice music there's a first! I do like the look of the D7100, but unfortunately it is not an D300s replacement. So I hope that there will be a "D400" review to be done soon! ;-)
Yeah, the camera is really grate and your reviews are the best, i really mean it!!! And i really like Nikons, but what do you think about Canon 70D? ... and what's the song on the begin ???
Hi love your video's already... what is that viewfinder cap thing you're using? Does it interfere with the LCD display on the back? I have this camera bought and I already own the Nikon 16-85 lens. I like to buy a zoom what do you recommend as tele the Tamron 4-5.6 70-300 you reviewed where you already stated over and over again that's a bargain for the performance?
Other than "No Aperture in Live View" this is a great camera for video. If you do decide to get it, please use the links i provided to B&H, Adorama, or Amazon to buy it to support my efforts of the channel. Thanks
If you want to take pictures of items and yourself with blurry background? Does the camera focus itself or do have to do any type of settings for it to focus?
I have this camera and LOVE it....outdoors in daylight or with a flash. I shoot a lot of indoor sports without a flash and I set it in manual mode shooting at shutter speed of 500, aperture at F2.8 (using 24-70 or my 70 to 200 both F2.8's) and ISO set to automatic and I find that with normal high school gym lighting, I am shooting at ISO 3200+ (many at 6400) and the pictures get pretty grainy. And in the darker spots, focus is sometimes not that sharp. I have to use Noiseware to clean up the grain and Lightroom to improve sharpness. I am thinking about the new D4s coming out soon. Do you think its worth the money to get better indoor pictures? I'm hoping it improves picture quality and saves me post processing time.
There should be no auto focus issues in video mode as auto focus shouldn't be on in the first place. It needs to be turned off. Since its on, its doing exactly what it supposed to do, refocus after you set the focus point, which is what continuous auto focus is. Take it off and all your problems are gone.
As far as speed and buffer... I find that it shoots plenty fast for sports at 7fps and has plenty of buffer to motor drive sports shots if I use compressed RAW instead of lossless compressed and 12-bit RAW instead of 14-bit. For fun, I switched to JPEG only, set the JPEG compression to "Size Priority" and set the file size to Medium\Basic. It took 14 seconds for the buffer to fill at 7fps and I was able to rip off 100 shots (which mathematically is a little more than 7fps).
Can you follow up on what you said at the beginning about how it has no aperture control. What do you mean .. not aperture priority in semi auto? You can't set aperture and have it set the exposure. Or vice versa? or what?
When you are doing the high ISO checks are you shooting RAW or JPEG and allowing the camera software remove the noise? My high ISO shots in RAW are never that clean without some post work in LR. Thanks
I got no issue with re-focusing in video mode. See my channel if you want some reference. May be you should read the manual a bit more. Don't get me wrong. Even though I own a D90 for 4 years and now a D7100, still find it useful to read the manual over and over.
" you got your face on camera you crappy cab driver" I nearly dropped my coffee funny.........Got the d7100 on your recommendation Faymusmedia! So happy top camera great review!!!!!!

Great enthusiasm. I got myself one. I need to learn but these videos help me to appreciate the camera
i must say you gave more detail on all the features than I've seen from anyone else u really sold the camera

I have this camera. Sitting in my van. I just ordered some lenses for it. Cameras just keep getting better but I need to master this one.

SCEcho2 really great camera video and image quality both outstanding, the dynamic range is outstanding too definitely worth it!

Cool video. It helped me get reacquainted with my D7100. Learned a few new things about it from the video. Thanks!
Fantastic review as always. My D7100 will be with me in 2 days. Can't wait.
Ok I have had this camera for just a little over a year and I completely LOVE this piece of equipment. My problem, I'm having difficulties shooting family members during basketball games and wrestling matches. I'm having lots of noise creep into the image. Suggestions???
Really like your reviews. Helped a lot on making my decision on getting the D7100 as my first nice DSLR. Keep them coming.
Can't decide if to buy the D5500 or the D7100. Doing wildlife most of the time and a bit macro.
its the square DK eyecup. i have a review on that with a link to buy it.
What an awesome review and may I add how nicely it was shot. LOL
Thanks Simon! You will love the D7100.
Best camera reviews on the net, bar none!!!!!n Well done!!
Awesome review.... I just upgraded to a Nikon D7100!
I would use the full frame lenses 14-24mm (21mm-36mm equivalent) the 24-70mm (36mm-105mm equivalent) & the 70-200mm (105mm-300mm equivalent). This gives you a 21-300mm range. Its perfect, tack sharp glass.

Also my camera is always in 'M' manual mode, so exposure shouldn't change. Still having issues :(
Thanks! One more question. If cost was a factor (I'm a student), what lens (Nikon or any other 3rd parties) would you suggest in general?
its because the screen compresses them to make room for the exif info. Here is the fix. Go to my menu, below the wrench. then go to add item. Were you using the kit lens in this review? Also, would you recommend 50mm F/1.8 or 35mm F/1.8 for general photography?
M upgrading to D7100 from D90 this week, after 3 yrs :)

Great video, just got my D7100 can't wait to try this bad boy out.
Keep up the great work.
I'm thinking about picking one of these for a documentary. What are your thoughts on its video taking capabilities?
is there a different version of D7100? you mention that your D7100 shoots 5 fps, but mine shoot 6fps, and 7 fps in 1.3x crop mode
Jeff Vick if you use 12 bit raw yes it does shoot 6 and 7 fps, but 14 raw it does 5 and 6
Great review... I just recently got the D7000 adding it to my collection with the D3200, and D40. I'm looking for a good portrait prime lens at a budget price been looking at the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 what's your take on that lens, I'm also open to other suggestions also.
Hey Corey, Just wondering what camera you actually used to film this video? Video looks amazing. Thanks!

Can you recommend the 17-55 2.8G for this camera ? Or should I rather get the 24-70 2.8 ? Please answer thank you
Is this a good camera for fashion photography, taking photos of models and what lens would you suggest for this type of photography? thanks
And also is it still worth getting? Even though it came out over a year ago
Those are all amazing and sharp lenses. The 24-70 and 70-200 will be used more often tho. Thats why I mentioned them.
Thanks. I definitely have more coming.
this is an amazing camera , wish to buy this one
Faymusmedia I can't find your review of the Canon 70D. Have you not reviewed and compared to the Nikon 7100?
LOL Hey Craig! Very well shot might I add :)
On the eye sight of the camera, How do you call that thing? eye expander? How much does it cost you? made for D7100 only? please let me know bro, I want to get that! thanks!

and what do you think about 85mm 1.4G and ( 35mm or 24mm 1.4G) on D7100?
Hi Corey, need a suggestion i just upgraded to the D7100 and have a 18-200 and 35... Corey, what is the eyepiece you have on the viewer of the camera please? Thank you.

Thanks Buddy! Make sure to use the links to the camera I provided to support the channel! :)
Definitely D7100 is an impressive camera and I like your passion to describe it!!!!
Nice work man , I own the d7100 myself and absolutely love it .. best review out there if u ask me ... looking forward to the d800 vs d800 shootout ;)
Please tell me the eyecup model or give me a link for where i can buy it. What is your opinion anout the eyecup? Thanks
Where did you get the eyepiece from, it looks good.
18-200 in the info box above. I have put the link there. Also the 24-70mm is amazing on the D7100.
I just bought a used D7100 (for $375). This video will be really useful.
How can the D7100 not be as sharp as the D800E if the D7100 has a higher pixel density? Could it be that the extra pixel density is exposing limitations in the lens?
you should do more of this, I really like your review.
Corey you talk about 9 shot bracketing, how do you do this. I have a D7100 and all I can get is 5
Can you clarify your comment about this camera not having aperture control? Have no idea what you mean by that.
Wow! A camera review with nice music there's a first!
I do like the look of the D7100, but unfortunately it is not an D300s replacement.
So I hope that there will be a "D400" review to be done soon! ;-)
First punk photographer i’ve seen 👌
Thanks buddy!
nice review !
how about the oil spot or dust sensor issues?
Yeah, the camera is really grate and your reviews are the best, i really mean it!!! And i really like Nikons, but what do you think about Canon 70D? ... and what's the song on the begin ???
Hi love your video's already... what is that viewfinder cap thing you're using? Does it interfere with the LCD display on the back? I have this camera bought and I already own the Nikon 16-85 lens. I like to buy a zoom what do you recommend as tele the Tamron 4-5.6 70-300 you reviewed where you already stated over and over again that's a bargain for the performance?
wht lens are you using and does the camera good in doors like at a play??
Come to australia to make some reviews, especially sydney, its a wonderful city, you'll live it..
Excuse, where can I get the support that you have in the view finder?
Can we change the bracket button to the ISO command?
Other than "No Aperture in Live View" this is a great camera for video. If you do decide to get it, please use the links i provided to B&H, Adorama, or Amazon to buy it to support my efforts of the channel.
Thanks
What's the best lens for video when using the nikon d7100? & what lens are you using to record this video?
I have on question im new to photofraphy bought d7100 with kit lens do you think it is any good for now?
Is it normall for the pictures to look blurry on the LCD screen until u zoom into it.. Please reply. I have this on my d7100
If you want to take pictures of items and yourself with blurry background? Does the camera focus itself or do have to do any type of settings for it to focus?
camera settings and depends what lens u have
hey Corey,
which mode were you using for the street shooting ?
Agreed. I shoot strictly @ 14-bit lossless with this camera so all i get is 5fps.
I think I am gonna buy this one, Thanks for the info!
Thanks a lot, you helped me to choose. Thank you for all explanation. Have fun.
There should be no auto focus issues in video mode as auto focus shouldn't be on in the first place. It needs to be turned off. Since its on, its doing exactly what it supposed to do, refocus after you set the focus point, which is what continuous auto focus is. Take it off and all your problems are gone.
Is it true in the crop mode you will loose quality?
What eye cup and adapter are you using, great vid, thank you :)
Or vice versa? or what?
You have to turn live view off and change the aperture and then go back into live view.
Mike Breler that's only an issue if your doing video but you can work around that buy getting a lens with an aperture ring
+Bikasi Actually, the D7200 is the top camera in the DX format.
Thanks! I am glad it helped. You wont be disappointed!
correction man its 6fps like the d7k and boost to 7fps in 1.3x crop...so its faster than d7k on that mode..great review..
Would you recommend this Nikon D7100 over the Fuji X T1
When you are doing the high ISO checks are you shooting RAW or JPEG and allowing the camera software remove the noise? My high ISO shots in RAW are never that clean without some post work in LR. Thanks
I never used any correction for noise.
I got no issue with re-focusing in video mode. See my channel if you want some reference. May be you should read the manual a bit more. Don't get me wrong. Even though I own a D90 for 4 years and now a D7100, still find it useful to read the manual over and over.
How abt D7100 with kit lens nikor 18 - 140mm ?
