  • Imagine a subtropical pine tree that can survive winter temperatures plunging to -30°F (-34°C)! Such a tree would describe the Pitlolly pine!
The Pitlolly pine (Pinus rigida x taeda) is a hybrid between the more cold and drought tolerant pitch pine (Pinus rigida) with the wet soil tolerance and overall form of the loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Although this tree is rarely cultivated, it provides a subtropical look to any northern Ohio landscape, and it is also expected to do well with climate change.
