Also from a world POV, his definition of large city is interesting. Cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, and New Delhi dwarf every city we have here so imo they shouldn’t be in the same category.

I grew up in Pittsburgh. It was a wonderful place to be a kid and young adult.
We had three professional teams, museums, a playhouse and a symphony. We had world class universities (notice how many actors attended Carnegie Mellon). We have plenty of hospitals and a beautiful skyline.
What people don’t know about Pittsburgh is that there are plenty of hill... I mean more than San Francisco.

Most of the urban areas in the US really started growing in the early 20th century onward when automobiles were introduced. Combination of urban planners then thinking they were at the forefront of designing a new, better type of city unlike the older cities but also corruption with automobile and oil companies pressuring politicians to build in ways that push people to buy cars. It's unfortunate so many cities were built like this in the US and it is nearly impossible to undo it unless our government was run like China and forced the changes. I kind of wish that were the case when it comes to cities. Or build out all new ones in areas where there's currently nothing, plenty of prime spots still on the west coast coastline but none of those states have the money to build out whole cities themselves, they can barely adapt the ones they have to population changes.

People complain about snow when it drops below a certain temperature and "black ice" starts to form and the wonderful snowflakes turn into hardened & dangerous piles of a potential car wreck. Snow is fine usually on the first day or maybe two days but when it lingers it becomes dangerous because it hardens & it's no longer a soft-pillowy substance. And then when ice comes along with it!? Forget about it....that's a nail in the coffin.

I’ve lived in PA my entire life only a day trip away, and have gone to Pittsburgh plenty of times, both casually to actually spend the day there, and driving through.
    Simply put, it really is a good city, and I’m pretty glad it made the list. I’m 20 so can’t speak for the bar/club quality or anything (though they’re supposedly incredible too), but some things I can tell to anyone interested from experience;
    - Pittsburgh has been doing much better with getting their economics to a point of judicial stability (since a large part of high crime is financial instability and lacking opportunity), and is about a decade into doing great with diversifying away from just metallurgy. Tech’s been in the area, and beyond Uber’s well-reported use of the city as an R&D bed for their self-driving efforts, Google has even made a facility there recently enough that brought up home values and tech prowess pretty considerably. There are still plenty of no-go areas, but for the most part, it’s pretty good.
    - The State sees lots of business from travelers in surrounding states, especially for clothes. That’s because our sales tax (6% state base, 7% Pittsburgh, 8% Philadelphia) exempts essentials. Basic clothing, healthy groceries (pretty much anything but something made by Coke, Pepsi or Frito-Lay, really), pharmaceuticals, and a few others are untaxed. Making it that if you’re a home cooker and go to the grocery store, buy $20 in vegetables and cooking liquids for example, you pay $20. Not $20.79 or the sort. It’s surprisingly convenient.
    - The Appalachians make for incredible hiking. They’re smooth and tall, but are everywhere, making it that unless you’re in a place with proper infrastructure, bikes can be impractical without strong legs and chains, and cars are prone to getting only about 80-90% of their expectable range when traveling due to all the on-and-off of the pedal, even on the Interstate.
    - Pennsylvania has been taking massive efforts (prior to the coronavirus at least) to legalize recreational marijuana for several years now, as medical has been doing so well, and I would not be surprised if immediately after coronavirus fades it takes spotlight again, which I highly support.
    - The State truly is *very* cloudy. We’ve got a mix between mountain weather (as it’s entirely Appalachian) and the humidity from the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie which coasts the NorthEast of the state.
    - The Susquehanna River runs through the state, and is among the oldest rivers in the world - which is tellable. It’s massive, and beside it are massive cliffs caused by the large hills of true Appalachian beauty that were carved by it. Whether you’re a nature lover or a historian it’s gorgeous, and carbon dating puts its youngest known points at 300,000,000 years old and oldest points at 340,000,000 years old. The only comparative river in the world is in Australia, which also tests out to 340m years at oldest deposits; I personally find it kind of cool that if there’s a place that dates to 350m years old, it’d officially be declared the oldest running river in the world, and my family members go fishing there every year or two since it’s only an hour away from our town.
    - Pennsylvania can get pretty humid at the height of Summer. But, the abundance of leafy hardwoods make that not too bad either because they’re great at keeping the sun off you when you find one. However, it doesn’t really rain all that much - literally just cumulative months of overcast annually.
    - If you’re conscious about energy, we’ve been doing great at expanding renewables. Being between the Great Lakes to the West and the Atlantic to the East, the mountains are great for wind, and even within sight of my town there’s 3 distinct wind farms built just within the past decade. I don’t give it much time until we’re entirely wind-powered.
    - There’s an entire arts district to Pittsburgh that’s very nice called the Cultural District. Has a website too that’s culturaldistrict.org, pretty useful at helping get a vibe of some of the things there.
    - A quick search on apartments.com shows that there’s tons of gorgeous, contemporary apartments of good one-two people size for usually the low thousand/mo point, with plenty of utilities included pretty often.
    - State has a very full 4 seasons with a pretty good balance of 3-3-3-3. Rich Autumns, crisp Springs, energizing Summers, and white Winters. There’s plenty of complaining among lifetimers, but seriously, I know tens of people who moved to the desert states for only a few months or years and cried when they got back having missed the sight of actual Earthly diversity so much. It’s lovable. Summers aren’t burning (except 2019’s heat wave) and Winters aren’t ones that’ll give your nose hypothermia through your mask or scarf if you so needlessly choose to have one, but they get to their comfortable extents of obviousness.
    - 3 hours away is Cherry Springs State Park. “Darkest Place East Of The Mississippi”. If you can see, whether independently or with contacts/glasses, you’ll love it.
    - The large cities of Philadelphia and NYC and even Cleveland with massive amounts of nightlife and other things to do compared to Pittsburgh (though is has plenty) are always a scenic day trip away. 6 hours to Manhattan, 5 to downtown Philadelphia, and 2 to Cleveland. In fact if you’re trying to start a business, most of the continental population (that being Canada included) is within 6 hours of the city. It’s actually a great mid-point to run operations due to expectable shipping costs, no matter of what type. There’s profound lifestyle diversity in the Appalachians.
    - Pennsylvanian farmers markets are incredible. Seriously. If there is a god, they made the region with agriculture in mind, because the stuff’s just good to the tongue, and the weather atop the soil makes it so simple to succeed I’ve literally seen 20th-story New Yorkers move to the region and harvest new gardens by the pound before they finished their renovations to the house. And fun fact too but PA’s apparently a major producer of good grapes for both wine and general eating, which I believe since I’ve been around entire miles of good vines my whole life. Same with Apple orchards. Hell, my old teacher somehow grows pineapples, nothing like Hawaiian ones but they’re still really good. Fruits, vegetables, meats of both marine and land.. we really do either have production of or quick access to a lot of good food. Italian restaurants here are tasty and abundant too.
    - Lots of good people. Lots of hostile dumbasses but lots of good people too. And PS, there’s a lot of concealed carriers here too, no matter where you’re at.
    - Pennsylvanians can be some incredibly pretty people. Not nearly as diverse as other places, especially outside of the cities, but atop being generally goodhearted, not too harsh on the eyes either. So if you actively do want to have a relationship, between the general character and the looks, I don’t even really need to tell you good luck. It’ll work out.
Lots of others too, but that’s a good one or two points for all I have at the top of my mind. We’re not prissy and materialistic like the West Coast but PA just may be the state the phrase “American Can-Do Attitude” came from. Seriously. Everyone here who’s not depressed into self-loathing is either actively doing something or at least recognizing that they can. It’s beautiful.
Not a bad place to be.

1980-2000s: population crash, no jobs, all the kids, including me, moved out to other cities. But the olds stayed so most of the neighborhoods never fell into disrepair. You can get a nice 3-4BR house for 80-100K 5mi from the city (fun fact: Pittsburgh came out of 08 relatively unscathed because there was never any real estate market to begin with). Unlike say Portland its a old city and the infrastructure can handle an influx of people (also what helps is that it hasn't gone boomtown and there hasn't been a mass migration like Austin today or Seattle in the 90s).
The county also has amazing huge parks throughout it.

And you're correct that it's not the most exciting city, we usually get passed up for the cool concerts and shows bUT we have yearly events that are unique to San Antonio plus Six Flags, the zoo, Seaworld, etc, so there's still lots to do.
